The aim of this study was to investigate a possible relation between oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), the presence of high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) DNA and p16 expression in young patients. Paraffin-embedded tumor blocks from 47 oral SCC of young (≤40-year old) patients were evaluated. The presence of HPV DNA in tumor specimens was analyzed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using GP5+/GP6+ generic primers (L1 region) followed by dot blot hybridization for HPV typing.

Prion protein (PrP(C) ), when associated with the secreted form of the stress-inducible protein 1 (STI1), plays an important role in neural survival, neuritogenesis, and memory formation. However, the role of the PrP(C) -STI1 complex in the physiology of neural progenitor/stem cells is unknown. In this article, we observed that neurospheres cultured from fetal forebrain of wild-type (Prnp(+/+) ) and PrP(C) -null (Prnp(0/0) ) mice were maintained for several passages without the loss of self-renewal or multipotentiality, as assessed by their continued capacity to generate neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes.

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation of CCND1 amplification and protein overexpression with clinicopathological features and clinical outcomes in patients younger than 41 years old with oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

Methods: Eighty-six young patients with oral SCC were evaluated using the tissue microarray technique, immunohistochemistry, and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). These cases were compared with 116 patients with oral cancer aged over 50 years old (controls).

Portal vein thrombosis is a complication that occurs anytime after liver transplantation and can compromise the patient and graft survival. We describe a combined technique for PV recanalization in cases of PV obstruction after liver transplantation. Four children (1%), of 367 subjected to liver transplantation from June 1991 to December 2008, underwent PV recanalization through a combined approach (transhepatic and minilaparotomy).

We describe a rare case of primary pleural synovial sarcoma in a 27-year-old man with a 4-month history of dry cough and left-sided chest pain. A CT scan showed a large cystic mass in the left pleural cavity. The patient underwent two video-assisted thoracoscopic biopsies and the diagnosis of synovial sarcoma of the pleura was established.

ErbB receptors and fatty acid synthase expression in aggressive head and neck squamous cell carcinomas.

Oral Dis

November 2010

Department of Head and Neck Surgery and Otorhinolaryngology Anatomic Pathology Thoracic Surgery, A.C. Camargo Hospital, São Paulo, Brazil.

Summary: Overexpression of ErbB receptors is frequent in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) and seems to be correlated with tumor progression and metastasis. Fatty acid synthase (FASN), the key lipogenic enzyme responsible for the endogenous synthesis of fatty acids, is regulated by ErbB2 and overexpressed in several human malignancies.

Methods: This study was performed to examine the immunohistochemical expression patterns of ErbB1, ErbB2, ErbB3, ErbB4, and FASN in a tissue microarray, containing 33 representative areas from aggressive primary HNSCC (whose patients had distant metastasis), and 21 matched lung metastasis.

Total glossectomy in the organ preservation era.

Curr Opin Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg

April 2010

Head and Neck Surgery and Otorhinolaryngology Department, A.C. Camargo Hospital, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Purpose Of Review: Total or subtotal glossectomy is considered a highly morbid procedure. However, in some institutions and in selected cases of unsuccessful chemoradiation regimens, it is performed with acceptable oncological and functional outcomes.

Recent Findings: Chemoradiation for advanced oral and oropharyngeal cancers is also highly morbid and some authors reported reasonable functional results after major glossectomies.

Evaluation of quantitative rt-PCR using nonamplified and amplified RNA.

Diagn Mol Pathol

March 2010

Laboratory of Genomics and Molecular Biology-A.C. Camargo Hospital, Institute of Biosciences, University of São Paulo (USP), São Paulo, Brazil.

Quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) is a standard assay in molecular medicine for gene expression analysis. Samples from incisional/needle biopsies, laser-microdissected tumor cells and other biologic sources, normally available in clinical cancer studies, generate very small amounts of RNA that are restrictive for expression analysis. As a consequence, an RNA amplification procedure is required to assess the gene expression levels of such sample types.

Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma affects mainly patients between the fifth and sixth decades of life, being rare in the young (≤40 years old).

Methods: Demographic, clinical, and pathologic features, and the long-term survival of 125 patients younger than 41 years of age were compared with 250 control patients older than 50 years old. Data were submitted to Kaplan-Meier and log-rank tests.

Objective: To identify preoperative characteristics associated with complete surgical resection of primary malignant mediastinal tumors.

Methods: Between 1996 and 2006, 42 patients with primary malignant mediastinal tumors were submitted to surgery with curative intent at a single facility. Patient charts were reviewed in order to collect data related to demographics, clinical manifestation, characteristics of mediastinal tumors and imaging aspects of invasiveness.

Parotid granular cell tumor (GCT) is a very rare tumor, with only 11 previously reported cases in the English-language literature. This report describes an uncommon case of multiple GCT involving the tongue and parotid gland and provides a review of the literature. A 58-year-old woman presented with a slow-growing mass involving the parotid region, which measured 3.

Antigen retrieval methods and estrogen receptor immunoexpression using 1D5 antibody: a comparative study.

Int J Surg Pathol

October 2005

Department of Anatomic Pathology, Center for Treatment and Research on Cancer, A. C. Camargo Hospital and Federal University of São Paulo, UNIFESP, São Paulo, Brazil.

Long-term formalin tissue fixation results in antigen masking, probably through aldehydic linkage between proteins and fixative molecules. Immunohistochemistry results depend on the type of the detection procedure and the type of antibody used for the reaction. Considering the difficulty in working with estrogen receptor (ER) antibodies and the lack of standardization of the antigen retrieval methods, we quantified the immunoexpression of ER using the 1D5 antibody and a standard streptavidin-biotin detection procedure retrieving with microwave oven, steamer, pressure cooker, and water bath in a set of SBR grade 2 invasive breast carcinomas.

Internal hemipelvectomy in the treatment of recurrent carcinoma of the colon: report of a case.

Dis Colon Rectum

December 1997

Department of Pelvic Surgery, A. C. Camargo Hospital, Antonio Prudente Foundation, São Paulo, Brazil.

Purpose: Although extended surgery has been established as an effective method for the treatment of advanced carcinoma of the colon, there are no reports in the literature of en bloc resection of the tumor together with the iliac bone. We report herein a 46-year-old woman with a second local recurrence after right colectomy, with the main objective of showing the possibility of indicating this type of surgery in selected cases.

Methods: In view of the lack of therapeutic options for the case and the absence of metastases, extended curative surgery for recurrent carcinoma of the colon was performed, with en bloc resection of the right iliac bone and of the crural nerve (Type I internal hemipelvectomy).
