Incorporation of pathological and (not mandatory) molecular features into the new FIGO 2023 staging system has generated some controversy. Several validations have been published recently that demonstrated the higher prognostic precision of FIGO 2023 compared to the previous FIGO 2009 scheme. In the present article, the authors want to respond to some concerns that were raised by some pathologists and clinicians.

The aim of this study was to determine whether the presence and extent of lymphovascular invasion (LVI) is prognostic in surgical stage I cervical squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). All available tumour slides and/or paraffin blocks from 426 patients with stage I cervical SCC treated surgically with curative intent were collected from 18 institutions and retrospectively analysed. Presence and extent of LVI (focal <5 spaces, extensive ≥5 spaces) were assessed on scanning magnification in large haematoxylin and eosin slide sets in 366 cases.

Objective: This study aimed to implement and evaluate a Deep Convolutional Neural Network for classifying myofibroblastic lesions into benign and malignant categories based on patch-based images.
Methods: A Residual Neural Network (ResNet50) model, pre-trained with weights from ImageNet, was fine-tuned to classify a cohort of 20 patients (11 benign and 9 malignant cases). Following annotation of tumor regions, the whole-slide images (WSIs) were fragmented into smaller patches (224 × 224 pixels).

The aim of the study was to report the outcome of primary localized low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS), sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma (SEF), and hybrid LGFMS/SEF (H-LGFMS/SEF). Patients with primary localized LGFMS, SEF, or H-LGFMS/SEF, surgically treated with curative intent from January 2000 to September 2022, were enrolled from 14 countries and 27 institutions. Pathologic inclusion criteria were predefined by expert pathologists.

Aims: To develop a model capable of distinguishing carcinoma ex-pleomorphic adenoma from pleomorphic adenoma using a convolutional neural network architecture.
Methods And Results: A cohort of 83 Brazilian patients, divided into carcinoma ex-pleomorphic adenoma (n = 42) and pleomorphic adenoma (n = 41), was used for training a convolutional neural network. The whole-slide images were annotated and fragmented into 743 869 (carcinoma ex-pleomorphic adenomas) and 211 714 (pleomorphic adenomas) patches, measuring 224 × 224 pixels.

Background: Infection diagnosis in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) is a challenge given the spectrum of conditions that present with systemic inflammation, the illness severity and the delay and imprecision of existing diagnostic methods. We hence sought to analyze the prevalence and predictors of confirmed infection after empirical antimicrobials during ICU stay.
Methods: retrospective cohort of prospectively collected ICU data in an academic tertiary hospital in São Paulo, Brazil.

The study of notable people as advocates for raising cancer awareness began in the latter decades of the 20th century. This research aimed to identify Pan-American notable people with head and neck cancer (HNC) and to explore senior health professionals' perspectives on communicating stories of notable patients with HNC to promote prevention. A cross-sectional survey was conducted using an online questionnaire designed in REDCap and administered to 32 senior health professionals with long-standing academic and clinical backgrounds in HNC.

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer are the first and second leading causes of death in Brazil and worldwide. However, an ongoing epidemiological transition in which cancer surpasses CVD has been observed in many high and middle-income countries. In this study, we provided a nationwide analysis of the transition towards cancer mortality predominance over CVD mortality in Brazil.

Introduction: In Brazil, regional disparities in mortality rates are evident. This study analyzes the mortality trends of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) from 1998 to 2017 in Espírito Santo.
Methods: Data on deaths were obtained from the Unified Health System's Department of Informatics (DATASUS), and population statistics were sourced from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

Background: Several tyrosine kinase receptors inhibitors (TKIs) have demonstrated antiproliferative effects in well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). We aimed to summarize and appraise the current evidence of the efficacy of TKIs in patients with different types of NETs.
Methods: We performed a systematic review of clinical trials of TKIs in patients with advanced gastroenteropancreatic or lung NETs (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42024507379).

Background: Thromboembolic events (TEEs) are frequent among patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAAD). We set out to estimate the incidence and establish predictive risk factors for TEE and estimate the impact of TEEs on the overall survival (OS) of patients with metastatic PAAD.
Methods: This is a retrospective, single-center study.

Background And Objective: Rehabilitation therapy plays an important role in treating physical and functional impairments observed in individuals undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplants (HSCT). This study assessed the rehabilitation practices implemented in the HSCT population internationally.
Materials And Methods: A 48-question online survey comprising questions soliciting information regarding patient characteristics, therapy details (timing, indication, and administering providers), outcome measures, and precautions were developed by an international group of cancer rehabilitation physicians.

A hereditary component of breast (BC) and colorectal cancer (CRC) has been described in approximately one-third of these tumor types. BC patients have an increased risk of developing CRC as a second primary tumor and vice versa. Germline genomic variants (NextSeq550, Illumina) were investigated in 24 unrelated BC and/or CRC patients and 7 relatives from 3 index patients.

The mechanisms involved with the pathogenesis of carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) seem to be associated with the accumulation of molecular alterations in the pleomorphic adenoma (PA). In this sense, using array-based comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) a rare series of 27 cases of CXPA and 14 residual PA (rPA) adjacent to the transformation area, we investigated the profile of the copy number alterations (CNAs) comparing benign residual and transformed areas. The main findings were correlated with the histopathological classification by histologic subtype and degree of invasion.

Benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors (BPNSTs) are a vast, common, heterogeneous group of lesions that are often diagnostically challenging. The head and neck region is recognized as the second most common location for these lesions, especially the tongue. However, BPNSTs occurring centrally within the jaw bones are exceedingly rare.
