For decades the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) has been a health concern in Greenland, especially within the age group of 15-34 year olds. However, no overview exists of the potential differences in regional incidence and management of STIs. This study investigates the age, gender and region specific diagnostic activity and incidence of gonorrhoea in Greenland in 2015.

This is a book review turned research paper. The aim is to estimate the differences in the maternal mortality rate (MMR) between untrained midwives, expert midwives, and the famous obstetrician Dr Smellie in eighteenth-century Britain. The paper shows that the birth attendance practices of the expert midwife Mrs Stone and of Dr Smellie were very similar, though Stone used her hands whereas Smellie used forceps.

Effect of high pressure treatment on the color of fresh and processed meats: A review.

Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr

July 2019

a University of Copenhagen, Faculty of Science, Department of Food Science , Frederiksberg C , Denmark.

High pressure (HP) treatment often results in discoloration of beef, lamb, pork, and poultry. The degree of color changes depends on the physical and chemical state of the meat, especially myoglobin, and the atmospheric conditions during and after pressurization. A decreased redness is attributed to a large degree to the oxidation of the bright red oxymyoglobin or the purplish deoxymyoglobin into the brownish metmyoglobin, as well as to the denaturation of myoglobin.

Outbreaks of salpingitis and peritonitis cause major economic losses due to high mortality, reduced egg-production, and culling. The aim of the present study was to characterize, in detail, lesions associated with increased mortality in layers due to avianpathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) and to investigate the population structure of the E. coli involved, which is important for selection of optimal treatment and prophylactic strategies.

Engineered nanomaterials (NMs) offer great technological advantages but their risks to human health are still not fully understood. An increasing body of evidence suggests that some NMs are capable of distributing from the site of exposure to a number of secondary organs. The research into the toxicity posed by the NMs in these secondary organs is expanding due to the realisation that some materials may reach and accumulate in these target sites.

Beyond motivation: on what it means to be a sperm donor in Denmark.

Anthropol Med

February 2015

a University of Copenhagen, Department of Health Sciences, Centre for Medical Science and Technology Studies, Oester Farimagsgade 5, Copenhagen , 1014 Denmark.

This paper, analyzing interviews with men that donate their semen in Denmark, explores what it means to be a sperm donor. Breaking with the assumption that men have a specific and clearly identifiable motivation to become sperm donors, this paper leaves the confinement of such an accountable actor model implied in asking for men's motivations to donate semen. Instead, the author describes the experiences of sperm donors to show how the moral, organizational, and biomedical-technological context of sperm donation in Denmark makes for enactments of moral selves as well as specific embodiments of masculinity.

Non-fermenting mycoplasma species deplete culture media for arginine through arginase activity linked to their arginine deiminase pathway, resulting in proliferation arrest and cell death in mycoplasma-contaminated cell cultures. The presence of only 2-3 Mycoplasma (M.) arginini-contaminated T cells in a one-way allogeneic mixed-lymphocyte culture (MLC) significantly inhibits development of cytotoxic T-cell activity.

The cellular function of the adenohypophysis was studied on a material comprising the pituitary glands from 36 human foetuses. Based on the activity of the glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase-NADPH(2) cytochrome c reductase system and the ultrastructural findings of free polyribosomes well developed granular endoplasmic reticulum extended Golgi-complex and secretory granules the three main functions of the pentose shunt was discussed: 1. the shunting of ribose-S-phosphate into nucleic acid synthesis 2.
