Phycobilisomes (PBSs) are giant water-soluble light-harvesting complexes of cyanobacteria and red algae, consisting of hundreds of phycobiliproteins precisely organized to deliver the energy of absorbed light to chlorophyll chromophores of the photosynthetic electron-transport chain. Quenching the excess of excitation energy is necessary for the photoprotection of photosynthetic apparatus. In cyanobacteria, quenching of PBS excitation is provided by the Orange Carotenoid Protein (OCP), which is activated under high light conditions.

The development of biopolymer scaffolds for intestine regeneration is one of the most actively developing areas in tissue engineering. However, intestinal regenerative processes after scaffold implantation depend on the activity of the intestinal microbial community that is in close symbiosis with intestinal epithelial cells. In this work, we study the impact of different scaffolds based on biocompatible poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and alginate (ALG) as well as PHB/ALG scaffolds seeded with probiotic bacteria on the composition of gut microbiota of Wistar rats.

Being an abundant renewable source of aromatic compounds, lignin is an important component of future bio-based economy. Currently, biotechnological processing of lignin through low molecular weight compounds is one of the conceptually promising ways for its valorization. To obtain lignin fragments suitable for further inclusion into microbial metabolism, it is proposed to use a ligninolytic system of white-rot fungi, which mainly comprises laccases and peroxidases.

Reliable detection of specific antibodies against pathogens by lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) greatly depends on the composition of the detectable complex and the order of its assembly. We compared three LFIA formats for revealing anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in sera with the following detected complexes in the analytical zone of the strip: antigen-antibodies-labeled immunoglobulin-binding protein (Scheme A); antigen-antibodies-labeled antigen (Scheme B); and immunoglobulin-binding protein-antibodies-labeled antigen (Scheme C). The lowest detection limit was observed for Scheme C, and was equal to 10 ng/mL of specific humanized monoclonal antibodies.

Background: One of the tasks of anticancer photodynamic therapy is increasing the efficacy of treatment of cancer nodes with large (clinically relevant) sizes using near-infrared photosensitizers (PS).
Methods: The anticancer efficacy and mechanisms of the photodynamic action of PS based on polycationic derivatives of synthetic bacteriochlorin against Lewis lung carcinoma were studied in vitro and in vivo.
Results: It was found that studied PS have high phototoxicity against Lewis lung carcinoma cells: the IC values were about 0.

Finding optimal conditions for competitive lateral flow immunoassay is a controversial task. The content of specific antibodies labeled by nanoparticles should be simultaneously high to reach intense signals and low to register an influence on the signals for minimal concentrations of the target analyte. We propose to use two kinds of complexes of gold nanoparticles in the assay, with antigen-protein conjugates and with specific antibodies.

14-3-3 proteins are dimeric hubs that bind hundreds of phosphorylated "clients" to regulate their function. Installing stable, functional mimics of phosphorylated amino acids into proteins offers a powerful strategy to study 14-3-3 function in cellular-like environments, but a previous genetic code expansion (GCE) system to translationally install nonhydrolyzable phosphoserine (nhpSer), with the γ-oxygen replaced with CH, site-specifically into proteins has seen limited usage. Here, we achieve a 40-fold improvement in this system by engineering into a six-step biosynthetic pathway that produces nhpSer from phosphoenolpyruvate.

Fasciclins (FAS1) are ancient adhesion protein domains with no common small ligand binding reported. A unique microalgal FAS1-containing astaxanthin (AXT)-binding protein (AstaP) binds a broad repertoire of carotenoids by a largely unknown mechanism. Under suboptimal growth conditions, bacteria can transit to the dormant forms characterized by a significantly reduced metabolic activity, resistance to various stress factors, and absence of cell proliferation.
