It is challenging to obtain in vivo or in situ experimental data from human muscles due to the invasive nature of such measurements. As a result, many investigations of human performance, surgery, or skeletal adaptation are necessarily based on musculoskeletal models. The utility of such models will depend on the question being asked and the extent to which the model is sufficiently accurate to address that question.

In palliative care, family caregivers are partners of multidisciplinary teams in the continuity of care at home. Effective therapeutic management provides optimal relief of distressing symptoms. It requires the acquisition of specific knowledge and care, but it also involves decision-making with ethical implications that increase the stress and burden on caregivers.

Background: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare and aggressive cancer with limited treatment options. This study aims to assess the impact of surgical intervention on overall survival (OS) in patients with MPM and to identify prognostic factors influencing survival outcomes.
Methods: Data from the SEER-17 Database between 2000 and 2019 were analyzed.

A quasi-experimental study comparing the mixing and discard methods of laboratory specimen techniques in an adult acute care setting was conducted over a 30-month period. Primary end points were delta hemoglobin (Hgb) and transfusion rates. Secondary end points were redraws related to hemolysis and erroneous results, noting central venous access device (CVAD) type.

Methods: Using data from participants in the Glycemic Variability and Fluctuations in Cognitive Status in Adults with T1D (GluCog) study ( = 114), we evaluated associations between phosphorylated tau (pTau)181, pTau217, β-amyloid 42/40 ratio, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and neurofilament light (NfL) and self-administered digital cognitive tests, adjusting for age, sex, education, comorbidities (e.g.

Melissa Cawley-Chambers, MHA, BSN, RN, CV-BC, is a Clinical Nurse Navigator, born and raised in rural Southside Virginia having served as a nurse for 15 years in a hospital setting and worked in acute and critical care for most of her career until transitioning to nurse navigation 3 years ago. Nurse Navigation gives her the fulfillment of giving back to the community and helping patients succeed in their chronic disease management.
Purpose Of Initiative: After noting an elevated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease readmission rate for 2022, the inpatient Nurse Navigator at a rural nonprofit, 116-bed acute care facility in the State of Virginia met with interdisciplinary team (IDT) members to identify improvement efforts to decrease 30-day readmission rates.
Primary Practice Setting: A 116-bed health care facility in Southside Virginia.
Methodology And Sample: Quality improvement initiative aimed to decrease 30-day penalty readmission rates using a collaborative IDT approach, focusing on patients 65 years or older who are discharged home or to an assisted living facility with a diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and pneumonia.

The intrinsic force production capability of human muscle can be expressed as "Specific Tension," or, the maximum force generated per cross-sectional area of muscle fibers. This value can be used to determine, for example, whether muscle quality changes during exercise, atrophy, disease, or hypertrophy. A value of 22.

Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (R-fMRI) offers insight into how synchrony within and between brain networks is altered in disease states. Individual and disease-related variability in intrinsic connectivity networks may influence our interpretation of R-fMRI data. We used a personalized approach designed to account for individual variation in the spatial location of correlation maxima to evaluate R-fMRI differences between Parkinson's disease (PD) patients who showed cognitive decline, those who remained cognitively stable and cognitively stable controls.

Developing a culture of innovative thinking and one that emphasizes clinician-researcher interaction is critical for the future of rehabilitation. We designed and implemented a strategy to build a culture of interdisciplinary communication and collaboration that facilitates translational research across several disciplines in our inpatient rehabilitation hospital. We colocated clinicians and researchers in workspaces within a new hospital and created the Research Accelerator Program-a collection of team-focused initiatives that promote communication and collaboration among researchers, clinicians, and other staff.

Lowering mutant huntingtin (mHTT) in the central nervous system (CNS) using antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) is a promising approach currently being evaluated in clinical trials for Huntington disease (HD). However, the therapeutic potential of ASOs in HD patients is limited by their inability to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB). In non-human primates, intrathecal infusion of ASOs results in limited brain distribution, with higher ASO concentrations in superficial regions and lower concentrations in deeper regions, such as the basal ganglia.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is responsible for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The severity of COVID-19 increases with each decade of life, a phenomenon that suggest that organismal aging contributes to the fatality of the disease. In this regard, we and others have previously shown that COVID-19 severity correlates with shorter telomeres, a molecular determinant of aging, in patient's leukocytes.

Background: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is characterized by increased cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure of unknown cause. It has been suggested that the inflammatory process plays a role in the pathophysiology of the disease. Sortilin-1, lipocalin-2, autotaxin, decorin, and interleukin-33 (IL-33) are among the factors involved in inflammatory processes.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) carries a post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEP) rate of 2-10%, which could be as high as 30-50% in high-risk cases. PEP is severe in up to 5% of cases, with potential for life-threatening complications, including multi-organ failure, peripancreatic fluid collections, and death in up to 1% of cases. The risk of PEP is potentially predictable and may be modified with pharmacological measures and endoscopist technique.

Natalie Knight, MSN, RN, CMSRN , is the nurse manager of an inpatient med-surg unit at a hospital in Illinois. She recently completed her MSN in health policy and has a growing interest in the role nurses play in advocating for healthcare legislation.
Despite the healthcare community's increased efforts to reduce health disparities in the United States, undocumented immigrants (UIs) remain one of the highest at-risk populations. Health and public policies, societal and healthcare worker bias, and fear of deportation are among barriers to healthcare access, resulting in increasingly poor health and health outcomes. Christian nurses, guided by biblical principles and the American Nurses Association's Code of Ethics for Nurses, can advocate for UIs' healthcare needs by supporting and promoting more inclusive institutional and government policies.

Objectives: Cardiac support systems are being used increasingly more due to the growing prevalence of heart failure and cardiogenic shock. Reducing cardiac afterload, intracardiac pressure, and flow support are important factors. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and intracardiac microaxial pump systems (Impella) as non-permanent MCS (mechanical circulatory support) are being used increasingly.

Antibiotics used as growth promoters in livestock and animal husbandry can be detected in animal-derived food. Epidemiological studies have indicated that exposure to these antibiotic residues in food may be associated with childhood obesity. Herein, the effect of exposure to a residual dose of tylosin-an antibiotic growth promoter-on host metabolism and gut microbiota was explored .
