Validation of the concavity-convexity quotient as a new method to measure the magnitude of scoliosis.

Objectives: We propose a novel and simple method to determine the magnitude of the curve in scoliosis and its correlation with the Cobb angle.

Methods: Using multiple rounds of nominal group technique and an established consensus-building methodology, a multidisciplinary research group identified a simple method to value the curve deformity based on the vertebral pedicles.

Measurements: A mathematical study was performed to determine the relationship between the Cobb angle and the concavity-convexity quotient (CCQ).

Pharmacogenetics of trough serum anti-TNF levels in paediatric inflammatory bowel disease.

Aims: Identifying DNA variants associated with trough serum anti-tumour necrosis factor (TNF) levels could predict response to treatment in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). To date, no specific studies have been performed in children. The aim of this study was to identify genetic variants associated with trough serum anti-TNF levels and whether these variants are differential markers for infliximab and adalimumab.

Lung cancer survival in never-smokers and exposure to residential radon: Results of the LCRINS study.

We aimed to evaluate lung cancer survival in never-smokers, both overall and specifically by sex, exposure to residential-radon, age, histological type, and diagnostic stage. We included lung cancer cases diagnosed in a multicentre, hospital-based, case-control-study of never-smoker patients, diagnosed from January-2011 to March-2015 (Lung Cancer Research In Never Smokers study). 369 never-smokers (79% women; median age 71 years; 80% adenocarcinoma; 66% stage IV) were included.

Surgical management of embolized Amplatzer septal occluder into the left ventricle tangled with the mitral valve.

Device embolization is a rare major complication of atrial septal defect percutaneous closures which requires surgical management if noninvasive retrieval fails. We report a symptomatic delayed embolization of an Amplatzer septal occluder device into the left ventricle outflow tract tangled with the mitral valve, complicated with ventricular arrhythmias and cardiac tamponade during percutaneous retrieval attempt. Emergent surgical treatment was performed, requiring a combined approach through the right atrium and the aorta for surgical removal.

Gene Signatures of Early Response to Anti-TNF Drugs in Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Around a 20-30% of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients are diagnosed before they are 18 years old. Anti-TNF drugs can induce and maintain remission in IBD, however, up to 30% of patients do not respond. The aim of the work was to identify markers that would predict an early response to anti-TNF drugs in pediatric patients with IBD.

Prognostic implications of pathogenic truncating variants in the TTN gene.

Introduction And Objectives: TTN gene truncating variants (TTNtv) are a frequent cause of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). However, there are discrepant data on the associated prognosis. Our objectives were to describe the prevalence of TTNtv in our cohort and to compare the clinical course with that described in the literature.

Deletions of specific exons of FHOD3 detected by next-generation sequencing are associated with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Despite new strategies, such as evaluating deep intronic variants and new genes in whole-genome-sequencing studies, the diagnostic yield of genetic testing in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is still around 50%. FHOD3 has emerged as a novel disease-causing gene for this phenotype, but the relevance and clinical implication of copy-number variations (CNVs) have not been determined. In this study, CNVs were evaluated using a comparative depth-of-coverage strategy by next-generation sequencing (NGS) in 5493 HCM probands and 2973 disease-controls.

Objectives: To assess the impact on survival of the total time interval since the first bodily change (sign/symptom) until the start of treatment in symptomatic oral cancer patients.

Methods: Retrospective, hospital-based study designed within the "Aarhus Statement" conceptual framework, using the overall interval to treatment of 183 oral cancer patients to analyse their survival rates.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience moderate to profound challenges in relation to the skills required for social participation. Animal-assisted intervention (AAI) is increasingly used within early community care. However, the results of its early application in this population group are not known.

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most prevalent diseases worldwide. The objective of this study was to find out under what preanalytical conditions routine and diagnostic glucose tests are performed across Spanish laboratories; and also what criteria are used for DM diagnosis.

Materials And Methods: An online survey was performed by the Commission on Quality Assurance in the Extra-Analytical Phase of the Spanish Society of Laboratory Medicine (SEQC-ML).

Results in liver transplantation using grafts from donors after controlled circulatory death: A single-center experience comparing donor grafts harvested after controlled circulatory death to those harvested after brain death.

Background: In recent years, interest in donation after cardiac death (DCD) has increased. Although DCD liver transplantation (LT) has demonstrated satisfactory long-term outcomes, different studies have shown poorer patient and graft survival after DCD than after donation after brain death (DBD). This study aimed to evaluate the results of LT using controlled DCD (cDCD) donors, specifically the incidence of primary non-function and ischemic cholangiopathy (IC), and to compare these results with those of LT using DBD in the same time period.

Importance: It is unclear whether hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) conveys excess mortality when compared with the general population.

Objective: To compare the survival of patients with HCM with that of the general European population.

Design, Setting, And Participants: Retrospective cohort study of 4893 consecutive adult patients with HCM presenting at 7 European referral centers between 1980 and 2013.

A data mining approach for classification of orthostatic and essential tremor based on MRI-derived brain volume and cortical thickness.

Objective: Orthostatic tremor (OT) is an extremely rare, misdiagnosed, and underdiagnosed disorder affecting adults in midlife. There is debate as to whether it is a different condition or a variant of essential tremor (ET), or even, if both conditions coexist. Our objective was to use data mining classification methods, using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-derived brain volume and cortical thickness data, to identify morphometric measures that help to discriminate OT patients from those with ET.

Association between hospital interval and survival in patients with oral cancer: A waiting time paradox.

Background: In early diagnosis studies on symptomatic cancer, survival was the most recommended outcome. The magnitude and impact of the patient interval and primary care interval is well-known in oral cancer; however, the hospital interval and its influence on surviving this neoplasia are not well known.

Aims: To quantify the interval between the first contact with the specialist and the start of treatment for patients with oral cancer and to evaluate whether there was a link between this interval and disease survival.

Diffusion tensor imaging in orthostatic tremor: a tract-based spatial statistics study.

Objective: The pathogenesis of orthostatic tremor (OT) is unknown. We investigated OT-related white matter changes and their correlations with scores from a neuropsychological testing battery.

Methods: Diffusion tensor imaging measures were compared between 14 OT patients and 14 age- and education-matched healthy controls, using whole-brain tract-based spatial statistics analysis.

Association between non-adherence behaviors, patients' experience with healthcare and beliefs in medications: a survey of patients with different chronic conditions.

The objective of the current work was to assess the frequency of non-adherence behaviors and potential association with patients' experience with healthcare and beliefs in medicines self-reported by patients with four different chronic conditions. Patients responded anonymously to a survey comprising five non-adherence behaviors (based on physician and patient input), an assessment of patients' experience with healthcare using the validated Instrument to Evaluate the EXperience of PAtients with Chronic diseases (IEXPAC), and a validated Spanish version of the Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire (BMQ). Associations of non-adherence behavior were analyzed using logistic regression models.

Surgical technique modifies the postoperative atrioventricular block rate in sutureless prostheses.

Background: The main objective was to analyse the impact of the modification of the Perceval S implantation technique on the prevalence of postoperative atrioventricular block, which requires a permanent pacemaker, in our aortic valve replacement series. In addition, we attempted to identify those risk factors that are related to the appearance of this complication.

Methods: Five hundred and seventy-two valve replacements were carried out with PERCEVAL S in our centre up to July 2018.

Evaluation of occult hepatitis B infection in tissue donors: a multicenter analysis in Spain.

Traditionally, when antibody to the Hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) and antibody to the Hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HBs) are positive, the donor is considered suitable. However, the literature contains cases with this profile and circulating hepatitis B virus DNA. The aim of the study is to analyze the incidence of occult hepatitis B virus infection (OBI).

Pharmaceutical companies information and antibiotic prescription patterns: A follow-up study in Spanish primary care.

Objectives: To assess the impact of sources of drug information on antibiotic prescribing patterns (quantity and quality) among primary care physicians.

Methods: We conducted a cohort study on primary care physicians who were actively engaged in medical practice in 2010 in a region in north-west Spain (Galicia), fulfilling inclusion criteria (n = 2100). As the independent variable, we took the perceived utility of 6 sources of information on antibiotics, as measured by the validated KAAR-11 questionnaire.

Pneumonia graft dysfunction as the cause of acute respiratory failure after lung transplant: a 4-year multicentre prospective study in 153 adults requiring intensive care admission.

We aimed to assess the main causes of intensive care unit (ICU) readmissions in lung transplant adults and to identify independent predictors of ICU mortality (primary end-point).This Spanish five-centre prospective cohort study enrolled all lung transplant adults with ICU readmissions after post-transplant ICU discharge between 2012 and 2016. Patients were followed until hospital discharge or death.

The Influence of Patient Experience with Healthcare on the Health-Related Quality of Life of People Living with HIV: An Observational Cross-Sectional Survey.

Introduction: Patient experience is central to the quality of healthcare delivery, showing positive associations with several outcome measures. The main objectives of this study are to analyze the influence of patient experience on the health-related quality of life in people living with HIV and the role played by treatment complexity and clinical care.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey with 467 patients with HIV.

Facial tumor as a presenting complaint in a patient with primary Sjögren's syndrome.

Sjögren's syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disorder of the exocrine glands with associated lymphocytic infiltrates of the affected glands. Dryness of the mouth and eyes results from involvement of the salivary and lacrimal glands. Up to one-half of affected individuals also develop extraglandular involvement in organs distinct from the salivary and lacrimal glands, including the joints, skin, lung, gastrointestinal tract, nervous system, and kidneys.
