Department of Internal Medicine III, Clinical Division of Nephrology and Dialysis, Medical University of Vienna, Vienna, Austria.

Post-transplantation diabetes mellitus (PTDM) remains a leading complication after solid organ transplantation. Previous international PTDM consensus meetings in 2003 and 2013 provided standardized frameworks to reduce heterogeneity in diagnosis, risk stratification and management. However, the last decade has seen significant advancements in our PTDM knowledge complemented by rapidly changing treatment algorithms for management of diabetes in the general population.

Buenavista s/n, 30120 Murcia Spain.

Background: Liver metastases from gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) can be found synchronously to a primary tumor and in the medium/long term after resection of a high-risk GIST. In these cases, treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitors like imatinib has provided good results, but drug resistance is common after two years of treatment. Liver resection of potentially resectable metastases can improve the results of medical treatment.

Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Valencia-INCLIVA, Valencia 46010, Spain | Biomedical Research Institute INCLIVA, 46010 Valencia, Spain | CIBER de Enfermedades Raras (CIBERER), Valencia, Spain.

The approval of istradefylline, an adenosine 2A receptor (A2AR) antagonist, as an addon treatment in adult patients with Parkinson's disease by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Medicines Agency (EMA), is the latest proof of the importance of the adenosinergic system in the nervous system. Adenosine is an endogenous purine nucleoside with a role as a modulator of both neurotransmission and the inflammatory response. As such, the expression pattern of the 4 adenosine receptors (A1R, A2AR, A2BR and A3R) and the extracellular adenosine levels have attracted great interest in the pathogenesis and possible treatment of rare neurodegenerative diseases with motor symptoms.

Epidemiology of NMOSD in Catalonia: Influence of the new 2015 criteria in incidence and prevalence estimates.

Mult Scler

December 2018

Center of Neuroimmunology, Laboratory of Advanced Imaging in Neuroimmunological Diseases, Hospital Clinic of Barcelona and Institut d'Investigacions Biomediques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS), University of Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain.

Background: Population-based studies on neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) are limited, and it is unclear whether the rates have changed with the implementation of the new 2015 criteria.

Objectives: To estimate the incidence and prevalence of NMOSD in Catalonia (Spain), using both the 2006 and the 2015 criteria.

Methods: In this clinic-based retrospective study, patients diagnosed with NMOSD between 2006 and 2015 were identified using multiple sources, including direct contact to all Catalan hospitals, identification of cases through the Catalan Health Surveillance System, and registry of antibodies to aquaporin-4 (AQP4-IgG) and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG-IgG) in a reference laboratory.

Background: Bladder cancer (BC) is one of the most common cancers in the western world and ranks as the most expensive to manage, due to the need for cystoscopic examination. BC shows frequent changes in DNA methylation, and several studies have shown the potential utility of urinary biomarkers by detecting epigenetic alterations in voided urine. The aim of this study is to develop a targeted bisulfite next-generation sequencing assay to diagnose BC from urine with high sensitivity and specificity.

Cardiovascular Research Center (CSIC-ICCC), Barcelona, Spain Biomedical Research Institute Sant Pau (IIB-Sant Pau), Barcelona, Spain Cardiovascular Research Chair, Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), Barcelona, Spain

HDL composition rather than HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) levels seems to be a key determinant of HDL-induced atheroprotection. Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) patients, with lifelong exposure to high LDL levels, show a high prevalence of premature coronary artery disease. We hypothesized that HDL of FH patients might have a modified protein composition and investigated the proteomic signature of HDL obtained from FH patients and their unaffected relatives.

March 2016

Servei de Microbiologia, Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, Barcelona, Spain Biomedical Research Institute Sant Pau (IIB Sant Pau), Barcelona, Spain Department of Genetics and Microbiology, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Bellaterra, Barcelona, Spain.

We evaluated FKS1 and FKS2 mutations in Candida parapsilosis bloodstream isolates and correlated them with the echinocandin MIC values determined by guidelines in CLSI document M27-A3 and the YeastOne panel. All mutations detected were outside hot spot (HS) regions. The F1386S mutation detected in an isolate that was resistant by the YeastOne panel but not by the M27-A3 guidelines might be implicated in echinocandin resistance.
