A 60-year-old man diagnosed clinically with Becker's muscular dystrophy 20 years ago by another physician presented with gradually progressive proximal muscle weakness since teenage years. Family history revealed a strong paternal familial inheritance pattern of similar distribution of weakness-face, forearm flexion, knee extension and foot dorsiflexion. Work-ups revealed B12 deficiency and allele 1 deletion in fascioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) DNA testing.

Bariatric surgery is being performed more often to alleviate the symptoms of severe obesity. There are complications to this surgery that need to be understood, however. To help understand the pathophysiology of neuromuscular complications after bariatric surgery, this article reviews the techniques and surgical and metabolic complications of bariatric surgery.

The purpose of this study was to examine the strength of the associations between 5 measures of need that are potentially modifiable in degenerative dementia patients and direct costs of care from 5 payer perspectives in the US healthcare system. Data were derived from a cohort study of 150 patients with a degenerative dementia. We measured need variables at baseline and utilization of healthcare in the year before and after baseline.

Atherosclerotic carotid stenosis has been recognized for the past several decades as being responsible for a significant portion of ischemic stroke, particularly the major and disabling ones. This category of stroke distinguished itself as being one of the first ones to have an effective preventive treatment in carotid endarterectomy. It took over 4 decades before major randomized, controlled trials were completed in North America and Europe to provide enough definitive information about its effectiveness, risks, limitations, and categories of patients that most benefit from it.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) can affect the nervous systems in several ways. The neurologic complications of this disease may be related to direct involvement of any part of the nervous system by metastasis or direct invasion, paraneoplastic involvement, or as a consequence of neurotoxicity from treatment(s) for the lymphoma. In addition, patients may develop infectious complications in the nervous system from immunosuppression related to the disease or its treatment.
