Emerging evidence suggests that the shift between osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) determines bone mass. Our study was aimed at testing whether a long noncoding RNA called zinc finger antisense 1 (ZFAS1) participates in the differentiation commitment of BMSCs during osteoporosis. We found that ZFAS1 expression was downregulated during osteogenic differentiation and upregulated during adipogenic differentiation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of thromboelastography (TEG) in monitoring coagulation in aspirin-treated patients undergoing posterior lumbar fusion surgery, with a particular focus on its perioperative use.
  • Eighty patients were analyzed, split into two groups: aspirin-naive and aspirin-treated, comparing various coagulation parameters before and after surgery, but no significant differences were found between the groups.
  • Limitations of the study include the small sample size, which may affect the reliability of the results, and a need for larger studies to confirm the findings.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Gotfried positive reduction (GPR) on repair of femoral neck fracture in rabbits and its underlying mechanisms. Male New Zealand white rabbits were employed to establish the model of femoral neck fracture. All the rabbits were randomly divided into four groups: control, open accurate reduction (OR), closed Gotfried negative support reduction (CR-N) and closed Gotfried positive support reduction (CR-P).

Microfluidic preparation of PLGA microspheres as cell carriers with sustainable Rapa release.

J Biomater Sci Polym Ed

May 2020

a Shanghai Key Laboratory of Multiphase Materials Chemical Engineering, State Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering, Department of Product Engineering, School of Chemical Engineering , East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai , China.

The current study, inspired by the immunosuppressive property of rapamycin (Rapa) and the benefit of microspheres both as drug delivery system and cell carriers, was designed to develop an efficient Rapa delivery system with tunable controllability to facilitate its local administration. A capillary-based two-phase microfluidic device was designed to prepare monodisperse poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) microspheres to load Rapa (PLGA-Rapa-M). The physical and chemical properties of PLGA-Rapa-M were characterized, and the Rapa loading capacity and release profile were explored.

Background: This study evaluates the effect of vitamin D status in patient outcomes after hip or knee joint surgery.

Method: Literature search was carried out in electronic databases, and study selection followed predetermined eligibility criteria. Data were extracted from relevant studies and meta-analyses of standardized mean differences between hypovitaminosis D (vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency) and euvitaminosis D in assessment scores of patient-reported outcomes were performed.

Preoperative ropivacaine with or without tramadol for femoral nerve block in total knee arthroplasty.

J Orthop Surg (Hong Kong)

August 2016

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Suzhou Municipal Hospital, Nanjing Medical University, Suzhou, China.

Purpose: To compare the analgesic effect of preoperative ropivacaine with or without tramadol for femoral nerve block in total knee arthroplasty (TKA).

Methods: 14 men and 46 women aged 59 to 80 years who were American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) grade I or II and were scheduled for TKA were randomised to receive preoperative femoral nerve block with 20 ml of 0.375% ropivacaine plus tramadol 0 mg (n=15), 50 mg (n=15), or 100 mg (n=15), or no preoperative femoral nerve block (control) [n=15].

Galectin-1 (GAL1), a widely expressed β‑galacto-side-binding protein, exerts pleiotropic biological functions. GAL1 has been found to be upregulated in many malignancies; yet the role of GAL1 in the pathophysiology of human osteosarcoma (OS) remains uncertain. The present study was carried out to investigate the expression of GAL1 in human OS tissues and to explore its effects on the growth and invasion of OS cells.

Clinical and radiographic outcomes of cervical disc replacement with a new prosthesis.

Spine J

June 2014

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Changzheng Hospital, The Second Military Medical University, 415 Fengyang Rd, Shanghai 200003, China. Electronic address:

Background Context: Anterior cervical discectomy and interbody fusion was a classical treatment for cervical degenerative disc disease (CDDD). However, the rigid fusion also leads to a reduction in normal cervical spine motion and to increased biomechanical stress at adjacent levels, which in turn accelerates degenerative changes of the discs at these levels. Cervical disc replacement (CDR) is a new technology with the aim of addressing the limitations of fusion procession and preserving motion at the treated level.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of osteoprotegerin gene (OPG) with bone mineral density (BMD) and osteoporosis. A total of 338 Chinese postmenopausal women with primary osteoporosis and 367 healthy controls were enrolled. The lumbar spine (L₂₋₄), total hip and femoral neck hip of BMD were assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA).

Study Design: A retrospective review of prospectively collected data in an academic institution.

Objective: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a new type of titanium mesh cage (TMC) in single-level, anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion (ACCF).

Methods: Fifty-eight patients consecutive with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) from cervical degenerative spondylosis and isolated ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament were treated with a single-level ACCF using either a new type of TMC (28 patients, group A) or the traditional TMC (30 patients, group B).

Significant association between cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen 4 +49G>A polymorphism and risk of malignant bone tumors.

Tumour Biol

December 2013

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, No. 98 Hospital of PLA, No.9 Chezhan Road, Huzhou, 313000, China,

Cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen 4 (CTLA-4) gene +49G>A polymorphism was implicated to be associated with risk of malignant bone tumors, but the finding was inconclusive owing to the limited sample of a single study. The objective of the current study was to conduct a pooled analysis of four previously published studies to investigate the association between CTLA-4 +49G>A polymorphism and the risk of malignant bone tumors. Data were extracted, and the pooled odds ratio (OR) with the corresponding 95% confidence interval (95% CI) was calculated to assess the association.

Current developments in dural repair: a focused review on new methods and materials.

Front Biosci (Landmark Ed)

June 2013

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, No. 98 Hospital of PLA, Huzhou, Zhejiang, China.

The dura mater, the outermost layer of the meninges covering the brain and spinal cord, is a collagenous connective tissue consisting of numerous collagen fibers, fibroblasts, and few elastic fibers arranged in a parallel form. The dura mater may be damaged by trauma or excising during intracranial or spinal surgery., To date, cerebrospinal fluid leakage followed by dura damage is still an intractable complication due to its various secondary complications , dural repair has recently garnered increased attention with the progress of the spinal surgery and neurosurgery.

PCAF acetylates Runx2 and promotes osteoblast differentiation.

J Bone Miner Metab

July 2013

Department of Orthopaedics, 98 Hospital of PLA, Zhejiang, 313000, Huzhou, China.

Osteoblasts play a crucial role in bone formation. However, the molecular mechanisms involved in osteoblast differentiation remain largely unclear. Runt-related gene 2 (Runx2) is a master transcriptional factor for osteoblast differentiation.
