α5-nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α5-nAChR) plays a vital part in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). However, it is not comprehensively understood that how the α5-nAChR affects LUAD. Through diverse bioinformatics analyses and immunohistochemistry, the expressions of α5-nAChR and SOX2 as well as their relations were dissected.

Article Synopsis
  • - A study found no previous reports on hypertensive emergencies linked to neck posture changes, highlighting a unique case involving a 57-year-old woman with cervical spondylotic radiculopathy who experienced a sudden increase in blood pressure during surgery.
  • - The patient's hypertension was resolved by changing her neck position and required a different surgical approach than initially planned, leading to successful outcomes in cervical movement without further blood pressure spikes.
  • - The findings suggest that proper neck positioning and rapid surgical intervention can help prevent hypertensive emergencies in similar cases, emphasizing the importance of managing posture during medical procedures.

Introduction: There is no established scoring model focused on viral hepatitis patients to predict the prognosis after transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS). We aimed to develop and validate a novel model based on the largest cohort for better prediction of both short-term (1 year) and long-term (3 years) postoperative prognoses after TIPS in viral hepatitis cirrhosis-related portal hypertension patients.

Methods: A total of 925 viral hepatitis cirrhosis-related portal hypertension patients who underwent TIPS from nine hospitals were divided into the training and external validation cohorts.

Medicine (Baltimore)

March 2024

Department of Orthopedics, 960 Hospital of PLA, Jinan, Shandong, People's Republic of China.

Rationale: There is still information about pregnancy- and lactation-associated osteoporosis, which is a type of osteoporosis that occurs in women with normal bone in the late pregnancy or lactation period.

Patient Concerns: Six cases of pregnancy- and lactation-associated osteoporosis diagnosed in our Endocrinology and Orthopedics Departments from January 2018 to June 2020 were retrospectively studied. Department of Histology and Embryology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, State Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine and Offspring Health, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, China.

Spermatogenesis is a developmental process driven by interactions between germ cells and Sertoli cells. This process depends on appropriate gene expression, which might be regulated by transcription factors. This study focused on , a zinc finger transcription factor, and explored its function and molecular mechanisms in spermatogenesis in a mouse model.

. Imaging of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles based on their non-linear response to alternating magnetic fields shows promise for imaging cells and vasculature in healthy and diseased tissue. Such imaging can be achieved through x-space reconstruction typically along a unidirectional Cartesian trajectory, which rapidly convolutes the particle distribution with a 'anisotropic blurring' point spread function (PSF), leading to images with anisotropic resolution.

Echinocandins are the newest antifungal drugs and are first-line treatment option for life-threatening systemic infections. Due to lack of consensus regarding what temperature should be used when evaluating susceptibility of yeasts to echinocandins, typically either 30°C, 35°C, or 37°C is used. However, the impact of temperature on antifungal efficacy of echinocandins is unexplored.

Background: Anticoagulation treatment after lower limb surgery is one of the key methods to avoid thrombosis, and low-molecular-weight heparin is the treatment that is most frequently used in clinical practice. But one uncommon side effect of low-molecular-weight heparin is heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), which can develop into thrombosis if not caught early or managed incorrectly.

Case Summary: We present a case of a patient who underwent hip arthroplasty and experienced thrombocytopenia due to HIT on the 9 d following the application of low-molecular-weight heparin anticoagulation.

Background: The aim of this study was to analyze the effectiveness and safety of H101 in Chinese patients with malignant pleural effusion and ascites (MPE/MA) in the real world.

Methods: This multicenter, observational, real-world study recruited patients with MPE/MA caused by malignant tumor receiving H101-containing treatment between January 2020 and June 2022. Effectiveness was evaluated by overall remission rate (ORR), and safety was evaluated based on adverse events (AEs).

Electronic address:

Glutaredoxin 2 (Grx2), a mitochondrial glutathione-dependent oxidoreductase, is crucial for maintaining redox homeostasis and cellular functions in the lens. The oxidative stress-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of lens epithelial cells (LECs) is related to posterior capsule opacification. In this study, we investigated the effects of Grx2 on oxidative stress-induced EMT in LECs during posterior capsule opacification.

Background: Obesity-related diseases have important implications for the occurrence, severity, and outcome of ischemic heart disease. Patients with obesity, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes mellitus (metabolic syndrome) are at increased risk of heart attack with decreased plasma lipocalin levels, and lipocalin is negatively correlated with heart attack incidence. APPL1 is a signaling protein with multiple functional structural domains and plays an important role in the APN signaling pathway.

Oral cancer is one of the most common malignancies of the head and neck, and approximately 90% of oral cancers are oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs). The purinergic P2Y2 receptor is upregulated in breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer, and liver cancer, but its role in OSCC is still unclear. Here, we examined the effects of P2Y2 on the invasion and migration of oral cancer cells (SCC15 and CAL27).

Inflammation and endothelial dysfunction play an essential role in heart failure (HF). Epidermal growth factor-like protein 7 (EGFL7) is upregulated during pathological hypoxia and exerts a protective role. However, it is unclear whether there is a link between abnormal EGFL7 expression and inflammation in overload stress-induced heart failure.

TMPRSS12 Functions in Meiosis and Spermiogenesis and Is Required for Male Fertility in Mice.

Front Cell Dev Biol

April 2022

State Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine, Department of Histology and Embryology, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, China.

Serine proteases are involved in many physiological activities as initiators of proteolytic cascades, and some members have been reported to play roles in male reproduction. Transmembrane serine protease 12 (TMPRSS12) has been shown to regulate sperm motility and uterotubal junction migration in mice, but its role in the testis remains unknown. In this study, we verified that TMPRSS12 was expressed in the spermatocytes and spermatids of testis and the acrosome of sperm.
