Wildfires in western US forests increased over the last two decades, resulting in elevated solid and nutrient loadings to streams, and occasionally threatening drinking water supplies. We demonstrated that a linked LANDIS (LANDscape DIsturbance and Succession)-VELMA (Visualizing Ecosystem Land Management Assessments) modeling approach can simulate wildland fire effects on water quality using the 2002 Colorado Hayman Fire. Utilizing LANDIS-II's forest landscape model to simulate forest composition and VELMA's eco-hydrologic model to simulate pre- and post-fire water quantity and quality, the best calibration performance yielded a Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) of 0.

The scientific foundation for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) measurements in water, soils, sediments, biosolids, biota, and outdoor air has rapidly expanded; however, there are limited efforts devoted to developing analytical methods to measure vapor-phase PFAS in indoor air. A gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) method coupled with thermal desorption (TD) sorbent tube analysis was developed to quantify trace levels of fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs) emitted from consumer products in the indoor environment. Method evaluation included determination of instrument detection limits (IDLs), quality assurance checks of target standards purchased from different vendors, sample loss during storage, and TD sorbent breakthrough with tubes coupled in-series.

Although next-generation per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS) were designed and implemented as safer and environmentally degradable alternatives to "forever" legacy PFAS, there is little evidence to support the actual transformation of these compounds and less evidence of the safety of transformed products in the environment. Multiple congeners of one such PFAS alternative, the chloro-perfluoropolyether carboxylates (Cl-PFPECAs), have been found in New Jersey soils surrounding a manufacturing facility. These compounds are ideal candidates for investigating environmental transformation due to the existence of potential reaction centers including a chlorinated carbon and ether linkages.

Reservoirs are dominant features of the modern hydrologic landscape and provide vital services. However, the unique morphology of reservoirs can create suitable conditions for excessive algae growth and associated cyanobacteria blooms in shallow in-flow reservoir locations by providing warm water environments with relatively high nutrient inputs, deposition, and nutrient storage. Cyanobacteria harmful algal blooms (cyanoHAB) are costly water management issues and bloom recurrence is associated with economic costs and negative impacts to human, animal, and environmental health.

We present results of a multiyear study of the Everglades (Florida, USA) detailing how differences in environmental variables can alter mercury concentrations in the food web. About 1000 random locations throughout the freshwater Everglades marsh have been sampled for the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Everglades Regional Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program ("REMAP") since 1995. REMAP sampling is synoptic and multimedia, including an abundant prey fish (eastern mosquitofish, Gambusia holbrooki) as an indicator of mercury bioaccumulation.

Analytical data for ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC), nontargeted, high-resolution, mass-spectrometry (HR/MS) molecular features from a wide array of samples are used to calculate CC/C isotopologue ratios. These ratios increase with molecular carbon number roughly following a trend defined by atmospheric carbon. When the effective source reservoir C/C ratio is calculated from the isotopologue ratio (assuming a fractionation factor of unity), features in biotic samples uniformly are tightly grouped, proximate to atmospheric C/C ratio.

Coliphages can indicate contamination of recreational waters and previous studies show that sunlight is important in altering densities of coliphages, other indicator microorganisms, and pathogens in aquatic environments. Here, we report on laboratory studies of light-induced inactivation of two coliphage groups-male-specific (F+) and somatic coliphage-under various conditions in phosphate-buffered water (PBW). In recent years, fluorotelomer-based polymers (FTPs) have been the dominant product of the fluorotelomer industry. For the last decade, whether FTPs degrade to toxic perfluorocarboxylates (PFCAs) has been vigorously contested, with early studies arguing that FTPs have half-lives >1000 years, and others concluding decadal half-lives. Pesticide use in agricultural areas requires the application of numerous chemicals to control target organisms, leaving non-target organisms at risk. Under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is required to perform new chemical reviews of nanomaterials identified in premanufacture notices. However, environmental fate models developed for traditional contaminants are limited in their ability to simulate nanomaterials' environmental behavior by incomplete understanding and representation of the processes governing nanomaterial distribution in the environment and by scarce empirical data quantifying the interaction of nanomaterials with environmental surfaces. In this study, the well-known Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program (WASP) was updated to incorporate particle collision rate and particle attachment efficiency to simulate multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) fate and transport in surface waters.

Suffolk County, New York, is a locus for West Nile virus (WNV) infection in the American northeast that includes the majority of Long Island to the east of New York City. The county has a system of light and gravid traps used for mosquito collection and disease monitoring. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) facilitates multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) debundling and enhances nanotube stability in the aqueous environment by adsorbing on the nanotube surfaces, thereby increasing repulsive electrostatic forces and steric effects. The resulting SDS-wrapped MWCNTs are utilized in industrial applications and have been widely employed in environmental studies. For terrestrial amphibians, accumulation of pesticides through dermal contact is a primary route of exposure in agricultural landscapes and may be contributing to widespread amphibian declines. To show pesticide transfer across the amphibian dermis at permitted label application rates, our study was designed to measure pesticide body burdens after two simulated exposure scenarios. We compared direct exposures, where amphibians were present when spraying occurred, to indirect exposures, where amphibians were exposed to soils after pesticide application.
