A low-cost and renewable magnetite-pine bark (MPB) sorbent was evaluated in continuous-flow systems for the removal of various pharmaceuticals from municipal wastewater effluent following membrane bioreactor (MBR) treatment. A 33-day small-scale column test (bed volume: 791 cm) was conducted using duplicate columns of biochar (BC, Novocarbo) and activated carbon (AC, ColorSorb) as reference for two columns of BC and MPB in order to compare the efficiency of AC and MPB. After the small-scale column test, the pharmaceutical concentrations were generally below the detection limit.

The relationship of Mikkola, 1980; Mikkola, 1998; and Mikkola, 1998 is reconsidered based on 59 genitalia slides (37 males and 22 females) and 40 barcodes of adults collected from the type localities and areas in-between. Due to lack of stable morphologic differences, apart from the wing coloration of , and low genetic distance between the three, they are considered as three subspecies of : the nominotypical one and Included are photographs of all specimens covering 37 adults, and 28 male and 18 female genitalia, as well as a phylogenetic tree and a map showing collecting localities.

Salla disease (SD) is a lysosomal storage disease where free sialic acid (SA) accumulates in lysosomes due to the impaired function of a membrane protein, sialin. Synchrotron radiation-based scanning transmission soft X-ray spectromicroscopy (STXM) was used to analyze both SD patients' fibroblasts and normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF) from healthy controls. Both cell lines were also cultured with -acetyl-d-mannosamine monohydrate (ManNAc) to see if it increased SA concentration in the cells.

In genomics, use of deep learning (DL) is rapidly growing and DL has successfully demonstrated its ability to uncover complex relationships in large biological and biomedical data sets. With the development of high-throughput sequencing techniques, genomic markers can now be allocated to large sections of a genome. By analyzing allele sharing between individuals, one may calculate realized genomic relationships from single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) data rather than relying on known pedigree relationships under polygenic model.

Additive and dominance genetic variances underlying the expression of quantitative traits are important quantities for predicting short-term responses to selection, but they are notoriously challenging to estimate in most non-model wild populations. Specifically, large-sized or panmictic populations may be characterized by low variance in genetic relatedness among individuals which, in turn, can prevent accurate estimation of quantitative genetic parameters. We used estimates of genome-wide identity-by-descent (IBD) sharing from autosomal SNP loci to estimate quantitative genetic parameters for ecologically important traits in nine-spined sticklebacks (Pungitius pungitius) from a large, outbred population.

Geoconservation and related quantitative and qualitative geodiversity assessments are gaining increasing attention. However, methodologies for measuring geodiversity at local scale are currently rare. Here, we present a framework for assessing local-scale geodiversity of different landforms using field-based and digital elevation model (DEM-) derived data from the Rokua UNESCO Global Geopark in Finland.

Covering approximately 40% of land surfaces, grasslands provide critical ecosystem services that rely on soil organisms. However, the global determinants of soil biodiversity and functioning remain underexplored. In this study, we investigate the drivers of soil microbial and detritivore activity in grasslands across a wide range of climatic conditions on five continents.

Structural disorder and low crystallinity render it challenging to characterise the atomic-level structure of layered double hydroxides (LDH). We report a novel multi-step, first-principles computational workflow for the analysis of paramagnetic solid-state NMR of complex inorganic systems such as LDH, which are commonly used as catalysts and energy storage materials. A series of CO-labelled MgNiAl-LDH, ranging from 0 (MgAl-LDH) to 2 (NiAl-LDH), features three distinct eigenvalues , and of the experimental C chemical shift tensor.

Advances in hyperpolarisation and indirect detection have enabled the development of xenon nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) biosensors (XBSs) for molecule-selective sensing in down to picomolar concentration. Cryptophanes (Crs) are popular cages for hosting the Xe "spy". Understanding the microscopic host-guest chemistry has remained a challenge in the XBS field.

Microplastics (MPs) are an anthropogenic pollutant of emerging concern prominent in both raw and treated municipal wastewater as well as urban and agricultural run-off. There is a critical need for the mitigation of both point- and diffuse sources, with treatment wetlands a possible sustainable nature-based solution. In this study, the possible retention of MPs in treatment wetlands of the widely used surface flow (SF) type was investigated.

Pubertal timing varies considerably and has been associated with a range of health outcomes in later life. To elucidate the underlying biological mechanisms, we performed multi-ancestry genetic analyses in ~800,000 women, identifying 1,080 independent signals associated with age at menarche. Collectively these loci explained 11% of the trait variance in an independent sample, with women at the top and bottom 1% of polygenic risk exhibiting a ~11 and ~14-fold higher risk of delayed and precocious pubertal development, respectively.

Background: Fatigue is a prominent and disabling symptom of multiple sclerosis (MS), impairing quality of life. The disease course of relapsing remitting MS (RRMS) is individual.
Objectives: We aimed to study the effects of demographic and clinical characteristics, as well as lifestyle risk factors on experienced fatigue and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among RRMS patients, comparing benign and severe disease types.

A compartmental mathematical model of spreading COVID-19 disease in Wuhan, China is applied to investigate the pandemic behaviour in Iran. This model is a system of seven ordinary differential equations including individual behavioural reactions, governmental actions, holiday extensions, travel restrictions, hospitalizations, and quarantine. We fit the Chinese model to the Covid-19 outbreak in Iran and estimate the values of parameters by trial-error approach.

Floating hook-moss () is a bryophyte growing in northern aquatic and peatland ecosystems. uptakes metals and excessive amounts of nitrogen from wastewater, which suggests that it may have commercial potential for use in phytoremediation. Optimization of growth conditions would allow artificial cultivation of floating hook moss in large quantities for phytoremediation applications.

Due to climate change, increased microbial activity in high-latitude soils may lead to higher greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, microbial GHG production and consumption mechanisms in tundra soils are not thoroughly understood. To investigate how the diversity and functional potential of bacterial and archaeal communities vary across vegetation types and soil layers, we analyzed 116 soil metatranscriptomes from 73 sites in the Finnish sub-Arctic.

A microscopic description of the energetics and dynamics of xenon NMR biosensors can be experimentally difficult to achieve. We conduct molecular dynamics and metadynamics simulations of a prototypical Xe@cryptophane-A biosensor in an explicit water solvent. We compute the non-covalent Xe binding energy, identify the complexation mechanism of Xe, and calculate the exchange dynamics of water molecules between the solution and the host.

Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) comprises a heterogenous group of progressive neurodegenerative syndromes. To date, no validated biomarkers or effective disease-modifying therapies exist for the different clinical or genetic subtypes of FTLD. The most common genetic cause underlying FTLD and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a hexanucleotide repeat expansion in the C9orf72 gene (C9-HRE).
