Identifying factors associated with alcohol use changes during pregnancy is important for developing interventions for people with HIV (PWH). Pregnant PWH (n = 202) initiating antiretroviral therapy in Uganda and South Africa completed two assessments, 6 months apart (T1, T2). Categories were derived based on AUDIT-C scores: "no use" (AUDIT-C = 0 at T1 and T2), "new use" (AUDIT-C = 0 at T1, >0 at T2), "quit" (AUDIT-C > 0 at T1, =0 at T2), and "continued use" (AUDIT-C > 0, T1 and T2).

  • Pediatric neurointerventional radiology is a growing field, addressing the balance between the benefits of advanced treatments and the risks of radiation specifically in infants under one year old.
  • A study analyzed 132 patients over 25 years, detailing 226 procedures performed, with a focus on treatment types, demographics, and indications for intervention.
  • The increase in procedures, particularly since 2010, is mainly attributed to the introduction of intra-arterial chemotherapy for retinoblastoma, which has become a significant part of treatment for infants.

Yet, most IHSS caregivers receive little or no training in dementia care. We present preliminary descriptive results of the IHSS + ADRD Training Project, a 10-week, competency-based, dementia training program, delivered online, for IHSS caregivers, in Alameda County.

Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, School of Nursing, Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies, and Healthforce Center, University of California, 8785University of California, San Francisco, United States.

A healthcare workforce representative of the race/ethnicity composition of the population it serves is central to addressing systemic health inequities. The aim of this study was to assess workforce trends of underrepresented minority (URM) nurses using the National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses years 2008 and 2018 and the American Community Survey years 2010 and 2019. We examined changes over time in URM composition (Black/African American (B/AA), Latine, American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI/AN), Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (NH/PI)) for registered nurses (RN), nurse practitioners (NPs), educational attainment (diploma/associate, BSN, MS(N)/PhD), job type (patient care, research, administration/supervision, teaching, other), and rural/urban location using descriptive statistics and bivariate regressions.

Little is known about the genetic characteristics associated with exercise in women undergoing breast cancer surgery. In a sample of women who were evaluated prior to breast cancer surgery ( = 310), we evaluated for differences in demographic and clinical characteristics between patients who did and did not exercise on a regular basis and evaluated for associations between polymorphisms in genes for pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, their receptors, and their transcriptional regulators. Patients completed an investigator-developed exercise questionnaire.

Oral Cavity Spindle Cell Carcinoma (OCSCC) is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma involving the nasopharynx and oral mucosa. This tumor has a high propensity to invade local structures of the head and neck region, making surgical removal challenging and potentially morbid for the patient. Here, we report a case of OCSCC and the complications that were confronted during its surgical resection.

August 2022

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, San Francisco School of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco, CA, USA.

Cochlear implant (CI) users commonly report degraded musical sound quality. To improve CI-mediated music perception and enjoyment, we must understand factors that affect sound quality. In the present study, we utilize frequency response manipulation (FRM), a process that adjusts the energies of frequency bands within an audio signal, to determine its impact on CI-user sound quality assessments of musical stimuli.

Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChE-I) are the core treatment of mild to severe Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the efficacy of AChE-I treatment on electroencephalography (EEG) and cognition remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the EEG power and coherence changes, in addition to neuropsychological performance, following a one-year treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • The text discusses two cases of female patients (ages 54 and 60) who suffered from chest pain, malaise, cough, and dyspnea, where diagnostic imaging revealed an anterior mediastinal mass.
  • Biopsies initially suggested an epithelial neoplasm compatible with thymoma, and surgical resection confirmed the presence of micronodular thymoma along with lymphoid proliferation infiltrating surrounding tissues in both cases.
  • The lymphoid proliferation varied between the two patients: one showed atypical lymphocytes with increased mitotic activity, while the other had more mature lymphocytes, highlighting the unusual association between micronodular thymoma and lymphoma that should be considered in diagnoses.
