Korean Americans have consistently reported the underutilization of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, despite their high rates of CRC incidence and mortality. Research has indicated suboptimal CRC knowledge in Korean Americans as one of the main barriers to their recommended CRC screening. The purpose of this study was to examine correlations between health indicators (age, BMI, blood pressure (BP), functional strength (FS), handgrip strength, and predicted VO max) and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) in an active 50 years+ population. Study participants' mean cIMT was also compared to the cIMT mean of the general population. Health screenings were conducted on 1818 participants at the Huntsman World Senior Games from 2016 to 2019.

Compressive sensing is a sub-Nyquist sampling technique for efficient signal acquisition and reconstruction of sparse or compressible signals. In order to account for the sparsity of the underlying signal of interest, it is common to use sparsifying priors such as Bernoulli-Gaussian-inverse Gamma (BGiG) and Gaussian-inverse Gamma (GiG) priors on the components of the signal. With the introduction of variational Bayesian inference, the sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) methods for solving the inverse problem of compressive sensing have received significant interest as the SBL methods become more efficient in terms of execution time.

Total Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of Clavatadines C-E.

We described herein the application of a convergent and protecting-group avoidant approach that led to the first total synthesis of the marine natural products clavatadine D () and E (), and the second total synthesis of clavatadine C (). In each case, a key amide-coupling afforded an immediate precursor of each natural product in a rapid manner from structurally similar western and eastern portions that derived from an ester of l-tyrosine and butane-1,4-diamine, respectively. A deprotection step free of detectable byproducts cleanly provided the remaining known members of the clavatadine family of natural products.

Fast filtered backprojection algorithm for low-dose computed tomography.

Shape selectivity is important in reversed-phase liquid chromatographic separations, where stationary phases are capable of separating geometric isomers, thereby resolving solutes based on their three-dimensional structure or shape rather than other chemical differences. Numerous chromatographic studies have been carried out using -alkyl-chain-modified columns to understand how molecular shape affects retention. For polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), it was found that planar compounds were selectively retained over nonplanar structures of comparable molecular weight on surfaces with longer -alkyl chains, higher chain-density, or at lower temperatures, where selectivity likely arises with greater ordering of the -alkyl chains.

Due to the beam-hardening effect of the broad energy spectrum of the X-ray source in computed tomography, the reconstructed images usually suffer from severe artifacts when metallic objects are being imaged. Metal artifact correction methods are usually sophisticated and not practical, especially in some non-medical applications, in which the linear attenuation coefficients are unknown. This paper suggests a simple and effective algorithm to estimate the unreliable measurements.

The lowpass filters are normally shift invariant and can be implemented as convolution in the spatial domain or as multiplication in the Fourier domain. The first total synthesis of clavatadine B (), a natural product found to be a selective human blood coagulation factor XIa inhibitor, is described. A convergent approach that exemplifies the advantages of direct, early stage guanidinylation provided an immediate clavatadine B precursor, which was assembled in an efficient manner using known synthetic precursors of the structurally related natural product clavatadine A (). Global deprotection cleanly provided clavatadine B in only four steps from a known derivative of homogentisic acid lactone (longest linear sequence, 75% overall yield).

Brown dwarfs are massive analogs of extrasolar giant planets and may host types of atmospheric circulation not seen in the solar system. We analyzed a long-term Spitzer Space Telescope infrared monitoring campaign of brown dwarfs to constrain cloud cover variations over a total of 192 rotations. The infrared brightness evolution is dominated by beat patterns caused by planetary-scale wave pairs and by a small number of bright spots.
