With the outbreak of COVID-19 and the implementation of stay-at-home (SAH) orders aimed to mitigate its spread, households became less mobile and sheltered in place. This behavior has potential implications for how households' value environmental (dis)amenities, especially those that are underutilized during the pandemic. In this paper, we explore changes in the valuation of two prominent environmental (dis)amenities - major roadway and open space proximity - by households within the Baltimore metropolitan region.

Insights into enhanced biodegradation of sulfadimethoxine by catalyst: Transcriptomic responses and free radical interactions.

The occurrence of sulfonamides in the environment is a severe global threat to public health due to the increasing prevalence of antibiotic selection pressure that may lead to the development of antibiotic resistance. We report an enhanced biodegradation of sulfadimethoxine (SDM) by Phanerochaete chrysosporium (Pc) with lignocellulosic biomass (Lb) using FeO-ZSM-5 as a catalyst (Pc/FeO-ZSM-5/Lb). SDM was completely degraded within 4 days at pH 7.

Perceived barriers to and suggested interventions for physical activity during pregnancy among participants of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) in Southern California.

Background: The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that pregnant women engage in at least 20 to 30 min of moderate-intensity physical activity on most days of the week. Regular exercise during pregnancy is associated with many benefits for the mother and the developing fetus; yet, a large number of pregnant women do not engage in the recommended amounts. This study aimed to investigate barriers to and interventions for physical activity among pregnant WIC participants in Southern California.

Chiroptical characterization tools for asymmetric small molecules - experimental and computational approaches for electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and anisotropy spectroscopy.

Synchrotron radiation electronic circular dichroism (SRECD) and anisotropy spectroscopy for both enantiomers of a group of small non-planar chiral molecules are reported here. The experimental SRECD spectra are compared to computational ECD spectra generated using time-dependent density functional theory and a thermal averaging over relevant molecular configurations. The combination of these experimental and computational characterization methodologies for such molecules enables the prediction and understanding of the spectral behavior of other small molecules, in addition to chiroptically characterizing members of the mandelic acid family substructure.

Efficacy of a Brief Biofeedback Intervention on Mood, Arousal, Mental Workload, Movement Time, and Biofeedback Device Preference.

Biofeedback (BF) training has been utilized with performers for years. Previous literature highlights the effectiveness of multi-week intervention protocols, but there is a lack of evidence for abbreviated interventions using portable devices and the performer's preference of these devices. Therefore, we investigated the effects of a brief BF intervention on mental workload, mood, arousal, and movement time and BF device preference.

Scale performance and composition in a small Amazonian armored catfish, Corydoras trilineatus.

The cory catfishes (Callichthyidae) are small, South American armored catfishes with a series of dermal scutes that run the length of the fish from posterior to the parieto-supraoccipital down to the caudal peduncle. In this study, we explore the anatomy and functional performance of the armored scutes in the three-striped cory catfish, Corydoras trilineatus. The lateral surface has a dorsal and a ventral row of scutes that interact at the horizontal septum.

Background: Prenatal exposure to increased androgens has been suggested as a risk factor for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This hypothesis has been examined by measurement of steroids in amniotic fluid, cord blood, saliva, and blood with mixed results.

Methods: To provide an orthogonal measure of fetal exposure, this study used meconium, the first stool of a newborn, to measure prenatal androgen exposure from infants in the Early Autism Risk Longitudinal Investigation (EARLI).

Severe Housing-Cost Burden and Low-Income Young Children's Exposure to Adverse Experiences: A Cross-Sectional Survey of WIC Participants in Los Angeles County.

Objective: Substantial literature has documented adverse childhood experiences' (ACEs) link with poor health in childhood and adulthood. Despite many American low-income families spending more than a third of their income toward housing costs, little research has been published about a link between severe housing-cost burden and ACEs. The objective of this study was to examine the association of severe housing-cost burden to the ACEs to which young, low-income children are exposed.

The genetic legacy of fragmentation and overexploitation in the threatened medicinal African pepper-bark tree, Warburgia salutaris.

The pepper-bark tree (Warburgia salutaris) is one of the most highly valued medicinal plant species worldwide. Native to southern Africa, this species has been extensively harvested for the bark, which is widely used in traditional health practices. Illegal harvesting coupled with habitat degradation has contributed to fragmentation of populations and a severe decline in its distribution.

The influence of body mass index and sex on frontal and sagittal plane knee mechanics during walking in young adults.

Background: Obesity and female sex are independent risk factors for knee osteoarthritis and also influence gait mechanics. However, the interaction between obesity and sex on gait mechanics is unclear, which may have implications for tailored gait modification strategies.

Research Question: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of obesity and sex on sagittal and frontal plane knee mechanics during gait in young adults.

Genomic analysis of two Acinetobacter baumannii strains belonging to two different sequence types (ST172 and ST25).

Objectives: Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic nosocomial pathogen that is the main focus of attention in clinical settings owing to its intrinsic ability to persist in the hospital environment and its capacity to acquire determinants of resistance and virulence. Here we present the genomic sequencing, molecular characterisation and genomic comparison of two A. baumannii strains belonging to two different sequence types (STs), one sporadic and one widely distributed in our region.

A 24-Week Physical Activity Intervention Increases Bone Mineral Content without Changes in Bone Markers in Youth with PWS.

Bone mineral density (BMD) is of concern in Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS). This study compared responses to a physical activity intervention in bone parameters and remodeling markers in youth with PWS ( = 45) and youth with non-syndromic obesity (NSO; = 66). Measurements occurred at baseline (PRE) and after 24 weeks (POST) of a home-based active games intervention with strengthening and jumping exercises (intervention group = I) or after a no-intervention period (control group = C).

HyperDocs are interactive, digital teaching and learning materials created, disseminated, and remixed by educators. To date, HyperDocs have not been the subject of published, peer-reviewed research. To address this research gap, we engaged in exploratory, primarily qualitative research to systematically examine how and why teachers use HyperDocs.

Governing Noncommunicable Diseases Through Political Rationality and Technologies of Government: A Discourse Analysis.

In the last two decades, global action to address noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) has accelerated, but policy adoption and implementation at the national level has been inadequate. This analysis examines the role of rationalities of governing, or , in national-level adoption of global recommendations. Critical discourse analysis was conducted using 49 formal institutional and organizational documents obtained through snowball sampling methodology.

Small Molecule Intervention in a Protein Kinase C-Gli Transcription Factor Axis.

Aberrations in the Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway are responsible for a broad range of human cancers, yet only a subset rely on the activity of the clinical target, Smoothened (Smo). As such, we sought to pursue a recently discovered connection between the Hedgehog pathway transcription factors, the glioma-associated oncogene homologues (Glis), and protein kinase C (PKC) isozymes.

The possible role of video gaming in imprinting aggressive and specifically gun-related behaviors has been elusive, and findings regarding these associations have been inconsistent. I address this gap by proposing and testing a that can explain inconsistent results regarding the previously assumed linear association between videogames and gun-related behaviors. The theory suggests that this association follows a U-shape.

Placement of Outdoor Exercise Equipment and Physical Activity: A Quasi-Experimental Study in Two Parks in Southern California.

To reduce the burden of chronic disease, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded the Orange County Partnerships to Improve Health (OC-PICH) project in Orange County, California. One of the strategies included adding outdoor exercise equipment (OEE) in two parks in Garden Grove and Anaheim. Using a quasi-experimental pre-post design, we evaluated park users' physical activity levels before and after OEE installation using the System for Observing Play and Recreation in Communities (SOPARC).

Value of routine evaluation in asymptomatic soft contact lens wearers.

Objectives: Limited literature supports the value of routine contact lens examinations. The purpose of this study is to document complications diagnosed when subjectively successful planned replacement soft contact lens patients are evaluated to renew their existing contact lens prescriptions.

Methods: Asymptomatic soft contact lens patients who presented to the University Eye Center at Ketchum Health (Anaheim, CA) and the Eye and Vision Center at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (Worcester, MA) for routine contact lens comprehensive exams to renew existing contact lens prescriptions were professionally evaluated and their complications documented.

Structural brain differences associated with extensive massively-multiplayer video gaming.

Video gaming can be associated with inter-individual differences in brain morphology. Much of this literature has focused on non-professional/occasional gamers who barely play, on the one extreme; or Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) cases who typically play more than 5 h/day, on the other extreme. We sought to extend this literature and focus on extensive gamers, who play about 3 h/day, which is typically more than non-professional gamers, but less than IGD cases.

Access to Dental Visits and Correlates of Preventive Dental Care in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Dental care received by children in the Autism Speaks Autism Treatment Network (ATN) was compared to National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) data for children without special healthcare needs and children with parent-reported ASD. Dynamic surface tension of xylem sap lipids.

The surface tension of xylem sap has been traditionally assumed to be close to that of the pure water because decreasing surface tension is thought to increase vulnerability to air seeding and embolism. However, xylem sap contains insoluble lipid-based surfactants, which also coat vessel and pit membrane surfaces, where gas bubbles can enter xylem under negative pressure in the process known as air seeding. Because of the insolubility of amphiphilic lipids, the surface tension influencing air seeding in pit pores is not the equilibrium surface tension of extracted bulk sap but the local surface tension at gas-liquid interfaces, which depends dynamically on the local concentration of lipids per surface area.
