Objective: To determine the in-hospital cost implications of an endoscopic expanded endonasal approach (EEEA) for meningioma resection relative to the open transcranial approach.

Methods: All anterior skull base meningioma surgeries performed over a period from January 1, 2015 to October 31th, 2017 were evaluated. The electronic medical record was reviewed for patient factors, tumor characteristics, and cost variables associated with each hospital stay and univariate analysis was performed using R software.

A small n, sequential, multiple assignment, randomized trial (snSMART) is a small sample, two-stage design where participants receive up to two treatments sequentially, but the second treatment depends on response to the first treatment. The parameters of interest in an snSMART are the first-stage response rates of the treatments, but outcomes from both stages can be used to obtain more information from a small sample. A novel way to incorporate the outcomes from both stages uses power prior models, in which first stage outcomes from an snSMART are regarded as the primary (internal) data and second stage outcomes are regarded as supplemental data (co-data).

ObjectivesWe examined the associations between state-level policies and the health of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) older adults. Using data from the 2018-2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System surveys, we assessed physical and mental health by the tally of points for enacted LGBT-related policies (Low= <0-49.9% of possible points, High= 50-100% of possible points) in 10,032 sexual minority (i.

The objective is to examine how older Korean Americans' perceived burdensomeness to their healthcare partners is associated with the characteristics of older adult participants () and their healthcare partners (). Surveys of 2150 participants in the Study of Older Korean Americans provided ego data. Participants were also asked to list up to three individuals whom they usually asked for help on health-related matters or healthcare use, which generated 3402 alters.

Poor sleep health is a risk factor for and a common symptom of dementia. Music has been shown to improve sleep across a wide range of clinical and community populations. However, it is unclear whether and to what extent music interventions may also help alleviate sleep problems in people with dementia.

Circulating levels of inflammatory biomarkers may be influenced by chronic psychological stressors such as those experienced by family caregivers. However, previous studies have found mostly small and inconsistent differences between caregivers and control samples on individual measures of systemic inflammation. Latent variables of inflammation were extracted from six biomarkers collected from two blood samples over 9 years apart for 502 participants in a national cohort study.

Music-based interventions have been shown to reduce behavioral expressions among persons with dementia. The goal of this study was to examine the feasibility and acceptability of a group music intervention to reduce agitation. Two memory care communities were recruited to participate in this single-arm mixed-methods study.

Given the importance of healthy eating in the later years of life, the present study examined factors associated with dietary risks in older Korean Americans. We hypothesized that dietary risks would be associated with sociodemographic disadvantages, adverse health conditions, and limited sociocultural resources. Dietary risks were assessed with a scale covering five behavioral and situational risk factors (eating alone, skipping meals, functional challenges, oral health problems, and financial difficulties).

Background: There is limited research on screening rates among uninsured cancer survivors. Uninsured cancer survivors are at higher risk of poorer health outcomes than the insured due to limited access to preventative screening for secondary cancers. This study examines the rates of surveillance and screening of uninsured cancer survivors and compares to uninsured patients without a cancer history seen in free clinics.

Older adults are among those most vulnerable to harm in disasters, such as hurricanes and wildfires. Nursing homes and other Medicare providers are subject to federal requirements to develop detailed disaster plans. However, millions of older adults receive care at home from non-Medicare providers who are under federal disaster preparedness rules that are less prescriptive than Medicare rules and subject to state interpretation.

Purpose: Although screening for colorectal cancer (CRC) lowers mortality and morbidity and is generally cost-effective, little is known about the cost-effectiveness of screening promotion.

Design: Cost-effectiveness analysis alongside a group-randomized trial. Setting: Multicultural, underinsured communities in the Phoenix, Arizona, area.

Data is limited on the immunogenicity of the COVID-19 two-vaccination series among patients with hematologic malignancies and current guidelines do not recommend routine monitoring for post-vaccine antibodies. However, we describe three patients who developed severe or critical COVID-19 infections six months after vaccination. This highlights the importance of routine testing of COVID-19 IgG Spike, semi-quantitative antibodies post-vaccination, particularly among immunocompromised patients.

Background: Flow-diverting (FD) stents, with or without coiling, are a mainstay in endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms (IAs). One observed complication from flow diverter stent (FDS) insertion has been in-stent stenosis. Though previously studied in the short-term period, the long-term history of this complication has yet to be described.

To monitor intrafraction motion during spine stereotactic body radiotherapy(SBRT) treatment delivery with readily available technology, we implemented triggered kV imaging using the on-board imager(OBI) of a modern medical linear accelerator with an advanced imaging package. Triggered kV imaging for intrafraction motion management was tested with an anthropomorphic phantom and simulated spine SBRT treatments to the thoracic and lumbar spine. The vertebral bodies and spinous processes were contoured as the image guided radiotherapy(IGRT) structures specific to this technique.

ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to evaluate effects of a self-managed music-guided exercise intervention on muscle strength among intensive care unit (ICU) survivors. We used a two-arm randomized-controlled trial. Following ICU discharge, eligible participants were assigned to one of two groups: music group ( = 13) or active control group ( = 13).

Background: Angiographic reperfusion after endovascular thrombectomy in acute ischemic stroke is commonly graded using volume-based reperfusion scores such as the modified thrombolysis in cerebral infarct score. The location of non-reperfused regions is not included in modified thrombolysis in cerebral infarct score. We studied the predictive ability of an eloquence-based reperfusion score.

This article focuses on access to domestic violence services within Belize. Using data from community asset mapping, interviews with key informants, and focus groups with community members, the multiple streams framework was used to identify potential areas for intervention to improve access and ameliorate the effects of family violence in Belize. Identified challenges to accessing limited domestic violence resources were mainly confidentiality concerns and mistrust.

Introduction: Endovascular therapy has shown to be safe and effective for the treatment of cerebral dural arteriovenous fistulas; however, recurrence after complete occlusion is not uncommon, and the timing of recurrence remains unknown.

Methods: A retrospective single-center cohort study was conducted from January 2005 to December 2020. Patients with high-grade (≥Borden II-Cognard IIB) dural arteriovenous fistulas treated with endovascular therapy were included in this study.

Objective: Computerized cognitive training has been successful in healthy older adults, but its efficacy has been mixed in patients with amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI).

Methods: In a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel clinical trial, we examined the short- and long-term efficacy of a brain-plasticity computerized cognitive training in 113 participants with amnestic MCI.

Results: Immediately after 40-hours of training, participants in the active control group who played computer games performed better than those in the experimental group on the primary cognitive outcome (p = 0.

Hearing aids classify acoustic environments into multiple, generic classes for the purposes of guiding signal processing. Information about environmental classification is made available to the clinician for fitting, counseling, and troubleshooting purposes. The goal of this study was to better inform scientists and clinicians about the nature of that information by comparing the classification schemes among five premium hearing instruments in a wide range of acoustic scenes including those that vary in signal-to-noise ratio and overall level (dB SPL).
