Sorafenib is recommended for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma refractory to transarterial chemoembolization but with unsatisfactory overall survival and tumor response rate. Previously published studies showed hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy of oxaliplatin, fluorouracil, and leucovorin was an effective and safe treatment. The aims of this study were to compare the clinical efficacy and safety of oxaliplatin, fluorouracil, and leucovorin-based hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy with sorafenib in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma refractory to transarterial chemoembolization.

The Prognostic Value of Preoperative Serum D-dimer Levels After Surgical Resection of Thymic Epithelial Tumors.

Cancer Control

November 2022

State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China, Collaborative Innovation Center for Cancer Medicine, 71067Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, Guangzhou, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Thymic epithelial tumors are the most common tumors in the mediastinum, and while surgery has a high survival rate, some patients need additional treatment and monitoring.
  • A study of 105 patients showed that certain preoperative blood indicators, like D-dimer levels and T stage, significantly correlate with patient outcomes after surgery.
  • Higher preoperative D-dimer levels are linked to worse survival rates, suggesting they could help tailor postoperative care for these patients.

: Tumor markers have been shown to be closely related to the long-term survival of patients with cancer and the recurrence of various malignant tumors. However, their role in thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) remains to be elucidated. We aimed to investigate whether the preoperative tumor biomarkers carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) could serve as independent predictors of postoperative prognosis in patients with TETs.

Department of Breast Oncology, State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China, Collaborative Innovation Center for Cancer Medicine, 71067Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, Guangzhou, China.

Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive breast cancer (HER2+BC) is a common malignancy that is prone to recurrence and metastasis in the early stages, resulting in a poor prognosis for patients. Many studies have suggested that targeted therapy promotes clinical outcomes in HER2+BC. With the introduction of trastuzumab in 1998, the prognosis of patients with early HER2+BC has improved significantly.

Objectives: Osimertinib has exhibited promising central nervous system (CNS) efficacy in Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutated advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. In real-world clinical practice, patients would turn to plasma genotyping or take osimertinib blindly after CNS progression on previous tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). However, the efficacy of osimertinib in those patients according to their T790M mutational status has not been explored.

Neuroimaging biomarkers are valuable predictors of motor improvement after stroke, but there is a gap between published evidence and clinical usage. In this work, we aimed to investigate whether machine learning techniques, when applied to a combination of baseline whole brain volumes and clinical data, can accurately predict individual motor outcome after stroke. Upper extremity Fugl-Meyer Assessments (FMA-UE) were conducted 1 week and 12 weeks, and structural MRI was performed 1 week, after onset in 56 patients with subcortical infarction.

Introduction: Using the TMN classification alone to predict survival in patients with gastric cancer has certain limitations, we conducted this study was to develop an effective nomogram based on aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase (AST/ALT) ratio to predict overall survival (OS) in surgically treated gastric cancer.

Methods: we retrospectively analyzed 190 cases of gastric cancer and used Cox regression analysis to identify the significant prognostic factors for OS in patients with resectable gastric cancer. The predictive accuracy of nomogram was assessed using a calibration plot, concordance index (C-index) and decision curve.
