Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism.

Endocrinol Metab Clin North Am

June 2024

Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes, UPMC Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh, 4401 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15224, USA.

Delayed puberty is defined as absent testicular enlargement in boys or breast development in girls at an age that is 2 to 2.5 SDS later than the mean age at which these events occur in the population (traditionally, 14 years in boys and 13 years in girls). One cause of delayed/absent puberty is hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH), which refers to inadequate hypothalamic/pituitary function leading to deficient production of sex steroids in males and females.

Treatment of Central Precocious Puberty with a Focus on Girls.

Endocrinol Metab Clin North Am

June 2024

Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, 705 Riley Hospital Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46202, USA.

The age of thelarche has declined in the past few decades but not the age of menarche. This is important when assessing girls who present with breast development between 6 and 8 years because not all of them will need treatment. The decision for treatment depends on age, bone age (BA), rate of pubertal progression, height velocity, psychosocial factors, and predicted adult height (PAH), with the caveat that height predictions are not precise and BA interpretation is variable.

Osteopetrosis in the pediatric patient: what the radiologist needs to know.

Pediatr Radiol

June 2024

Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences, Indiana University School of Medicine, Riley Hospital for Children, 705 Riley Hospital Drive, Room 1053, Indianapolis, IN, 46202, USA.

Osteopetrosis describes several types of rare sclerosing bone dysplasias of varying clinical and radiographic severity. The classic autosomal dominant subtype emerges most often in adolescence but can present from infancy through adulthood. The autosomal recessive osteopetrosis, or "malignant infantile osteopetrosis," presents in infancy with a grimmer prognosis, though the autosomal dominant forms (often mislabeled as "benign") actually can have life-threatening consequences as well.

Approach to the Patient: Youth-Onset Type 2 Diabetes.

J Clin Endocrinol Metab

December 2023

Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes, Department of Pediatrics, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, 200 N. Wolfe Street, Room 3114, Baltimore, MD 21287, USA.

Youth-onset type 2 diabetes is a growing epidemic with a rising incidence worldwide. Although the pathogenesis and diagnosis of youth-onset type 2 diabetes are similar to adult-onset type 2 diabetes, youth-onset type 2 diabetes is unique, with greater insulin resistance, insulin hypersecretion, and faster progression of pancreatic beta cell function decline. Individuals with youth-onset type 2 diabetes also develop complications at higher rates within short periods of time compared to adults with type 2 diabetes or youth with type 1 diabetes.

Human parechovirus encephalitis in infants: a retrospective single-center study (2017-2022).

Eur J Pediatr

October 2023

Department of Pediatrics, Ryan White Center for Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Global Health, Indiana University School of Medicine, 705 Riley Hospital Drive, Indianapolis, IN, 46202, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Parechoviruses (PeV) can lead to a range of conditions in infants, including mild cases and severe encephalitis, with an uptick in infections noted in the U.S. as of July 2022.
  • A study evaluating 2115 infants for meningoencephalitis found 32 cases of PeV encephalitis, which often presented without typical CSF abnormalities and included symptoms like fever, rash, and fussiness.
  • The research underscores that PeV should be considered as a potential cause of encephalitis, even when cerebrospinal fluid tests appear normal, and calls for further studies to track its epidemiology and outbreaks.
