There is an underutilization of smoking cessation treatment among patients with chronic conditions, which indicates a need for new strategies to engage them. Web-based smoking cessation decision-making tools can be beneficial. This study assessed the effectiveness of the software at increasing engagement to smoking cessation counseling groups among Brazilian smokers with chronic conditions.

Efficacy of Intraventricular Sponge Placement to Capture Debris in Aortic Valve Replacement.

Surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) carries the known risk of shedding debris into the left ventricle during valve leaflet excision and annulus debridement. Embolization of this debris may have devastating effects for the patient. Although surgeons have developed methods to mitigate this risk, no data exist as to their efficacy.

Fetal Vascular Ectasia Can be an Artifact of Placental Fixation.

Background: Placentas from outlying hospitals are formalin-fixed en route to our laboratory. We identified that chorionic, stem villus, and umbilical vessels in these fixed placentas are ectatic with greater frequency than in our in-house fresh placentas.

Methods: We searched our LIS for third trimester placentas using keywords "ectasia" or "ectatic" over a 12-month period.

The umbilicus is the site of a number of well-recognized and unusual abnormalities. Well-known neonatal umbilical abnormalities include umbilical hernias, granulomas/polyps, and congenital remnants of development. In this article, we describe a rare case of an appendix draining through the umbilicus of a neonate.

Cause of In-Hospital Death After Weaning from Venoarterial-Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation.

Purpose: A survival gap between weaning from venoarterial-extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) and the hospital discharge has been consistently reported. The aim of this study is to investigate the clinical features of patients who underwent successful VA-ECMO decannulation at our institution and to identify the major contributors responsible for adverse outcomes.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all patients supported with VA-ECMO in our institution between January 2013 and June 2020.

Diffuse Pagetoid Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Situ of the Esophagus: A Rare Case Report and Review of Literature.

Squamous cell carcinoma in situ (SCCIS) with diffuse pagetoid features has been well-described in skin and external genitalia. Diffuse pagetoid SCCIS of the esophagus is extremely rare with only two cases published in the English literature. In this article, we report a rare case of diffuse pagetoid SCCIS of the esophagus in an 89-year-old female with no significant past medical history who presented with dysphagia.

Smoking Cessation Mobile Interventions in Latin America: A Systematic Review.

Objective: To systematically review published articles reporting the use of smoking cessation mobile health (mHealth) interventions in Latin America.

Methods: Five different databases were searched from database inception to 2020. Criteria: (1) the research was a smoking cessation randomized controlled trial (RCT), quasi-experimental research, or single-arm study; (2) the intervention used at least one type of mHealth intervention; (3) the research was conducted in Latin American; and (4) the research reported the cessation rate.

The Development and Prototype Feedback of Digital Cancer 101 Videos to Enhance Cancer Education for Marginalized Communities With Limited Health Literacy.

Social media, in the form of digital videos targeted to people with limited health literacy, as well as disadvantaged or marginalized groups, may help reduce cancer health disparities and improve health outcomes in these populations. In this article, we document the process of adapting the content from the Cancer 101 curriculum to create animated scripts about the cancer care continuum that is clear, straightforward, and in plain language. The development of the Cancer 101 digital videos required a multidisciplinary collaboration from-public health, medicine, technology, and expertise in correctional health, smoking cessation, web development, video producers, and individuals directly impacted by cancer disparities.

Histiocytic Sarcoma Arising From a Long Bone: Report of Two Cases.

Histiocytic sarcoma is a rare, but aggressive malignant neoplasm of monocyte/macrophage lineage with a wide age distribution. Bone involvement is exceedingly rarer compared to the lymph node, skin, and soft tissue, and no long bone involvement has been reported in the English literature. We here report 2 cases of histiocytic sarcoma involving the long bone: one from the femur of a 77-year-old female, status post the placement of an intramedullary nail for subtrochanteric hip fracture; the other from the radius of a 3-year-old female with no significant medical history.

The development of standards and guidelines by professional societies offers clinicians guidance toward providing evidence-based care. The ultimate goals of standards and guidelines are to standardize care and improve patient safety and outcomes while also minimizing risk. The American Society of ExtraCorporeal Technology (AmSECT) currently offers perfusionists several clinical resources, primarily the ; however, no document exists specific to pediatric perfusion.

Objective: To determine whether prenatal ultrasound measurement of fetal stomach size, as a surrogate marker of fetal swallowing, is predictive of postnatal development of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in cases of isolated cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P).

New York State, and especially New York City, were hit hard by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) virus. While we followed its course in other parts of the world, and began preparations, there was no way we could have been prepared for the volume and severity of illness that began to overflow in our emergency departments and hospital units. We expanded intensive care units into our medical surgical units while turning conference rooms into medical surgical patient care areas.

Sleep and Interpersonal Violence: A Systematic Review.

Sleep disturbance is a significant public health issue that disproportionately affects survivors of interpersonal violence (IPV). This systematic review presents data on the relationship of IPV and sleep. Inclusion criteria for this review were studies that included subjects 18 years of age or older, used an IPV measure and sleep disturbance measure, and were published in a peer-reviewed journal in English.
