Early Stage Breast Cancer: Does Histologic Subtype (Ductal vs. Lobular) Impact 5 Year Overall Survival?

Cancers (Basel)

April 2024

Department of General Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology, Mayo Clinic Florida, 4500 San Pablo Road, Jacksonville, FL 32224, USA.

Histology is an important predictor of the behavior of breast cancer. We aim to study the impact of histology on the overall survival (OS) of breast cancer patients. We studied 11,085 breast cancer patients diagnosed with T1-T2 tumors, clinically node-negative and non-metastatic, from 2004 to 2019 included in the National Cancer Database.

JUMP: replicability analysis of high-throughput experiments with applications to spatial transcriptomic studies.

Bioinformatics

June 2023

Department of Statistics, Florida State University, 600 W College AVE, Tallahassee, FL 32306, United States.

Motivation: Replicability is the cornerstone of scientific research. The current statistical method for high-dimensional replicability analysis either cannot control the false discovery rate (FDR) or is too conservative.

Results: We propose a statistical method, JUMP, for the high-dimensional replicability analysis of two studies.

Levy Pl, New York, NY 10029, USA; Department of Psychology, Touro College and University System, 320 W 31st St, New York, NY 10001, USA.

Background: Lifestyle factors like time of eating and stress exposure may impact physiology to promote excess weight gain. To understand behavioral and physiological mechanisms underlying these potential effects, we compared appetite and gut hormone responses to a series of meal and stress challenges beginning in the morning and the afternoon, in adults with normal-weight and obesity.

Method: Thirty-two adults (16 with normal-weight, 16 with obesity) underwent the same test protocol on different days, each following an 8 h fast.

Peptoid-Directed Formation of Five-Fold Twinned Au Nanostars through Particle Attachment and Facet Stabilization.

Physical Sciences Division, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, 902 Battelle Boulevard, Richland, WA 99352, USA.

While bio-inspired synthesis offers great potential for controlling nucleation and growth of inorganic particles, precisely tuning biomolecule-particle interactions is a long-standing challenge. Herein, we used variations in peptoid sequence to manipulate peptoid-Au interactions, leading to the synthesis of concave five-fold twinned, five-pointed Au nanostars via a process of repeated particle attachment and facet stabilization. Ex situ and liquid-phase TEM observations show that a balance between particle attachment biased to occur near the star points, preferential growth along the [100] direction, and stabilization of (111) facets is critical to forming star-shaped particles.

January 2020

Askew School of Public Administration and Policy, Florida State University, 600 W. College Ave, Tallahassee, FL 32306, USA. Electronic address:

Recycling solid waste not only produces environmental and health benefits, but also generates economic benefit. This paper empirically evaluates the employment impact of Florida county recycling programs from 2000 through 2011, applying a fixed effects regression model. The results indicate that a one percentage point increase of county recycling rate leads to a 0.

Impact of slope on dynamics of running and climbing.

Bioinspir Biomim

July 2020

Florida State University, 600 W College Ave, Tallahassee, FL 32306, United States of America.

By combining biological studies and modeling work, the dynamics of running on horizontal terrain and climbing pure vertical surfaces have been distilled down to simple reduced order models. These models have inspired distinct control and design considerations for robots operating in each terrain. However, while the extremes are understood, the intermediate regions of moderate slopes have yet to be fully explored.

Increased mitochondrial turnover in the skeletal muscle of fasted, castrated mice is related to the magnitude of autophagy activation and muscle atrophy.

Mol Cell Endocrinol

September 2018

Department of Nutrition, Food & Exercise Sciences, Florida State University, 600 W. College Ave, Tallahassee, FL 32306, United States. Electronic address:

Androgen-deficiency promotes muscle atrophy in part by increasing autophagy-mediated muscle protein breakdown during the fasted state, but factors contributing to this remain undefined. To identify novel factors, mice were subjected to sham or castration surgery. Seven-weeks post-surgery, mice were fasted overnight, refed for 30 min, and fasted another 4.

Interpretation bias for uncertain threat: A replication and extension.

J Behav Ther Exp Psychiatry

June 2016

Florida State University, 600 W College Ave, Tallahassee, FL 32306, USA. Electronic address:

Background: Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) has been proposed as an important transdiagnostic variable within various anxiety-related disorders. Research has suggested that individuals high in IU may interpret ambiguous information in a more threatening manner, suggesting a negative interpretation bias for uncertain information. However, interpretation biases within IU have not been adequately tested in the literature.
