Increased interest in disseminating and implementing psychological treatments has focused on the need for evidence-based training programs for providers, especially those without specialized training. To evaluate provider-training programs, validated outcome measures are necessary; however, the scalable measurement of training outcomes has been largely overlooked. Current methods of assessing providers' ability to deliver psychological treatments are generally time-consuming and costly, representing a major bottleneck in scaling up mental health care for commonly occurring disorders such as depression.

A novel negative regulatory mechanism of Smurf2 in BMP/Smad signaling in bone.

Bone Res

November 2020

Department of Molecular Medicine for Pathogenesis, Ehime University Graduate School of Medicine, 454 Shitsukawa, Toon, Ehime, 791-0295, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • TGF-β and BMP are crucial for bone metabolism, with Smurf proteins like Smurf2 regulating their signaling by tagging molecules for degradation to prevent overactivation.
  • The study investigated Smurf2's role in BMP/Smad signaling using collagen sponges with BMP2 in both wild type (WT) and Smurf2 mice, revealing that Smurf2 mice had greater bone mass and formation.
  • Findings indicate that Smurf2 negatively influences BMP/Smad signaling, as its inhibition enhanced osteogenic differentiation in bone marrow cells, highlighting a new mechanism in bone metabolism.

Competing priorities: a qualitative study of how women make and enact decisions about weight gain in pregnancy.

BMC Pregnancy Childbirth

September 2020

Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, McMaster University, 1280 Main Street W, Hamilton, Ontario, L8S 4L8, Canada.

Background: Despite ample clinical evidence that gaining excess weight in pregnancy results in negative health outcomes for women and infants, more than half of women in Western industrialized nations gain in excess of national guidelines. The influence of socio-demographic factors and weight gain is well-established but not causal; the influence of psychological factors may explain some of this variation.

Methods: This is the qualitative portion of an explanatory sequential mixed-methods study designed to identify predictive psychological factors of excess gestational weight gain (QUAN) and then explain the relevance of those factors (qual).

Copper bioavailability is a KRAS-specific vulnerability in colorectal cancer.

Nat Commun

July 2020

Institute for Research in Immunology and Cancer (IRIC), Université de Montréal, Montreal, 2950, Chemin de la Polytechnique, Montréal, QC, H3T 1J4, Canada.

Despite its importance in human cancers, including colorectal cancers (CRC), oncogenic KRAS has been extremely challenging to target therapeutically. To identify potential vulnerabilities in KRAS-mutated CRC, we characterize the impact of oncogenic KRAS on the cell surface of intestinal epithelial cells. Here we show that oncogenic KRAS alters the expression of a myriad of cell-surface proteins implicated in diverse biological functions, and identify many potential surface-accessible therapeutic targets.

Electronic address:

Background & Aim: Previously we showed that modified fat breast milk (MFBM) facilitated resolution of post-surgical chylothorax in cardiac infants, but their weight-for-age and length-for-age z-scores declined over the ≥6-week treatment duration. Our aim was to evaluate the growth of infants diagnosed with post-surgical chylothorax and fed according to one of two proactive feeding protocols using MFBM or a high medium triglyceride (MCT)-containing formula (standard of care).

Methods: In this open-label trial, infants who were receiving >50% of their enteral feeds as breast milk prior to chylothorax diagnosis were randomized to receive their enteral feeds according to one of two proactive MFBM protocols: Target Fortification (n = 8), where the protein concentration of defatted breast milk was measured weekly and multi- and single-nutrient modulars were added to provide 3.

Background: Few studies have examined how maternal body mass index (BMI), mode of delivery and ethnicity affect the microbial composition of human milk and none have examined associations with maternal metabolic status. Given the high prevalence of maternal adiposity and impaired glucose metabolism, we systematically investigated the associations between these maternal factors in women ≥20 years and milk microbial composition and predicted functionality by V4-16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing (NCT01405547;  https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01405547 ).

Joint models for a longitudinal biomarker and a terminal event have gained interests for evaluating cancer clinical trials because the tumor evolution reflects directly the state of the disease. A biomarker characterizing the tumor size evolution over time can be highly informative for assessing treatment options and could be taken into account in addition to the survival time. The biomarker often has a semicontinuous distribution, i.

is a globally distributed marine-associated genus that can be found in a broad range of aquatic environments, including in association with macroalgal surfaces where they may take advantage of these rich sources of polysaccharides. The metabolic systems that confer the ability to metabolize this abundant form of photosynthetically fixed carbon, however, are not yet fully understood. Through genomics, transcriptomics, microbiology, and specific structure-function studies of pathway components we address the capacity of newly isolated marine pseudoalteromonads to metabolize the red algal galactan carrageenan.
