Background: Substance use, particularly injection drug use, continues to fuel the HIV/HCV (hepatitis C virus) epidemics in San Juan, Puerto Rico (PR).
Aim: This article examines individual and sociostructural factors that affect HIV/HCV risk among people who use drugs (PWUD) living with or at risk for HIV/HCV in San Juan, PR. Findings were used to inform a community-level intervention to enhance HIV care access and retention for this population.

Objective The contribution of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection to the risk of heart failure in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-coinfected persons is unknown. The objective was to characterize cardiac function and morphology in HIV-treated coinfected persons. Methods In a cross-sectional study, HIV-infected patients virologically suppressed on antiretroviral therapy without known cardiovascular disease or diabetes mellitus underwent cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy for measures of cardiac function, myocardial fibrosis, and steatosis.

Clinical phenotyping is currently used to guide pharmacological treatment decisions in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a personalized approach to care. Precision medicine integrates biological (endotype) and clinical (phenotype) information for a more individualized approach to pharmacotherapy, to maximize the benefit versus risk ratio. Biomarkers can be used to identify endotypes.
