Criteria for discharge of preterm infants from Canadian neonatal intensive care units.

Eur J Pediatr

April 2024

Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, IWK Health Centre and Dalhousie University, 5850/5980 University Ave, PO Box 9700, Halifax, NS, B3K 6R8, Canada.

Initial discharge from a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to home is a crucial milestone that impacts preterm infants, their families, and NICUs. Standardized discharge programs individualized for family needs can ensure a safe transfer of care to parents, decrease the length of stay and hospital costs, and improve parents' satisfaction. To assess the degree of variability in the current discharge criteria of preterm infants less than 34 weeks' gestation among Canadian NICUs, explore different institution-specific guidelines and degree of adherence to the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) guidelines.

The transgenerational effects of parental diagnoses, trauma and coping mechanisms on children's internalizing symptoms are not well understood. In a population-based study of 933 families combining data from a web-based survey and the Danish registers, we used an online survey of parents to examine how parental diagnoses, trauma and coping mechanisms affect the development of internalizing symptoms in children aged 6 to 18 years. To account for attrition, we used inverse probability weights in our regression models.

Purpose: Limiting family presence runs counter to the family-centred values of Canadian pediatric intensive care units (PICUs). This study explores how implementing and enforcing COVID-19-related restricted family presence (RFP) policies impacted PICU clinicians nationally.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, online, self-administered survey of Canadian PICU clinicians to assess experience and opinions of restrictions, moral distress (Moral Distress Thermometer, range 0-10), and mental health impacts (Impact of Event Scale [IES], range 0-75 and attributable stress [five-point Likert scale]).

Smartphone use provides a significant amount of screen-time for youth, and there have been growing concerns regarding its impact on their mental health. While time spent in a passive manner on the device is frequently considered deleterious, more active engagement with the phone might be protective for mental health. Recent developments in mobile sensing technology provide a unique opportunity to examine behaviour in a naturalistic manner.

The rapid development of innovations and new technologies, the focus on the life-course approach to immunization and equity, and the prevalent hesitancy towards vaccines requires immunization staff to be well-trained and updated regularly in order to deliver quality immunization services to the public. The need for advanced vaccinology training is therefore paramount. In preparation for a second Global Workshop on Advanced Vaccinology Training that took place in March 2022, this paper presents the results of a survey aiming to provide a thorough update of a landscape analysis on advanced vaccinology courses conducted in 2018 and a look at the impact of the COVID-19 crisis.

Academics and multinational pharmaceutical companies from high-income countries (HIC) are major drivers of health research in many low- and low-middle-income countries (LMIC) but have neglected investing in and growing local research capacity. Community-focused health research in LMICs needs to be more locally driven and benefiting. The MicroResearch (MR) workshop program supports teams of local healthcare workers and community experts to identify local healthcare problems.

Childhood exposure to phthalates, a class of chemicals with known reproductive and developmental effects, has been hypothesized to increase the risk of obesity, but this association is not well understood in preschool children. We examined the association between urinary concentrations of phthalate metabolites and concurrently measured body mass index (BMI) and skinfolds among children between the ages of two and five years. We collected anthropometric measures and biomonitoring data on approximately 200 children enrolled in the Maternal-Infant Research on Environmental Chemicals Child Development Plus study.
