Background: Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support Guidelines recommend maintaining blood pressure (BP) above the 5th percentile for age following return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) after cardiac arrest (CA). Emerging evidence suggests that targeting higher thresholds, such as the 10th or 25th percentiles, may improve neurologic outcomes. We aimed to evaluate the association between post-ROSC BP thresholds and neurologic outcome, hypothesizing that maintaining mean arterial pressure (MAP) and systolic blood pressure (SBP) above these thresholds would be associated with improved outcomes at hospital discharge.

Restricted and repetitive behavior (RRB) is a primary symptom of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which poses a significant risk to individuals' health and is becoming increasingly prevalent. However, the specific cellular and neural circuit mechanisms underlying the generation of RRB remain unclear. In this study, it is reported that the absence of the ASD-related protein Neuroligin 1 (NLGN1) in dopamine receptor D2-expressing medium spiny neurons (D2-MSNs) in the dorsal striatum is associated with the duration and frequency of self-grooming and digging behaviors.

The COVID-19 pandemic led to significant challenges for healthcare providers working with pregnant and parenting youth. However, the impacts of the pandemic on this population and healthcare services from the perspective of healthcare providers are not well documented in Canada. We examined the narratives and experiences of healthcare providers regarding these impacts and explored the challenges to service provision.

Stress induces aversive memory overgeneralization, a hallmark of many psychiatric disorders. Memories are encoded by a sparse ensemble of neurons active during an event (an engram ensemble). We examined the molecular and circuit processes mediating stress-induced threat memory overgeneralization in mice.

Background: Pregnant and parenting youth in Canada face multiple challenges in fulfilling their parenting responsibilities while meeting their own unique needs. The COVID-19 pandemic and its associated public health restrictions exacerbated their challenges by reducing access to support networks, limiting opportunities to promote growth and well-being, and destabilizing their financial and economic standing. The impacts of the pandemic on the mental, physical, and emotional health of individuals are well-documented in the literature.

The neonatal liver may be affected by a variety of congenital and acquired diseases. Imaging has an important role in the workup and management of many neonatal hepatic abnormalities. Some aspects of imaging the liver and imaging findings are specific to neonatal patients when compared with those in older children.

Joseph LeDoux is a pioneering neuroscientist who has made profound discoveries that continue to impact our understanding of the neural basis of emotion and memory, particularly the role of the amygdala in threat conditioning. LeDoux's trailblazing and elegant studies were some of the first to examine the circuit basis of behavior. His work combined techniques to trace pathways into and out of the amygdala important for threat conditioning and related behaviors.

Social memory impairment is a key symptom of many brain disorders, but its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Neuroligins (NLGs) are a family of cell adhesion molecules essential for synapse development and function and their dysfunctions are linked to neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders, including autism and schizophrenia. Although NLGs are extensively studied in neurons, their role in glial cells is poorly understood.

Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) remains a significant therapeutic challenge due to the lack of effective and safe treatment options. This study explores the potential of combining histone deacetylase (HDAC) and carbonic anhydrase 9 (CA9) inhibitors in treating DIPG. Analysis of RNA sequencing data and tumor tissue from patient samples for the expression of the carbonic anhydrase family and hypoxia signaling pathway activity revealed clinical relevance for targeting CA9 in DIPG.

In this research methods tutorial of clinical anesthesia, we will explore techniques to estimate the influence of a myriad of factors on patient outcomes. Big data that contain information on patients, treated by individual anesthesiologists and surgical teams, at different hospitals, have an inherent multi-level data structure (Fig. 1).

Background: Neuroangiography represents a critical diagnostic and therapeutic imaging modality whose associated radiation may be of concern in children. The availability of in vivo radiation damage markers would represent a key advancement for understanding radiation effects and aid in the development of radioprotective strategies.
Objective: Determine if biomarkers of cellular damage can be detected in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of children undergoing neuroangiography.

Dexamethasone use during hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) conditioning varies between pediatric centers. This study aimed to estimate the difference in 1-year treatment-related mortality (TRM) between patients who did or did not receive dexamethasone during HCT conditioning. Secondary objectives were to estimate the difference between dexamethasone-exposed and dexamethasone-unexposed groups in 1-year event-free survival (EFS), time to neutrophil engraftment, acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD), and invasive fungal disease (IFD) at day + 100.

Purpose: This study describes chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) control rates in pediatric and adult patients who did or did not receive guideline-consistent CINV prophylaxis.
Methods: We conducted a systematic literature review of studies published in 2000 or later that evaluated CINV control in patients receiving guideline-consistent vs. guideline-inconsistent CINV prophylaxis and reported at least one CINV-related patient outcome.

Network connectivity, as mapped by the whole brain connectome, plays a crucial role in regulating auditory function. Auditory deprivation such as unilateral hearing loss might alter structural network connectivity; however, these potential alterations are poorly understood. Thirty-seven acoustic neuroma patients with unilateral hearing loss (19 left-sided and 18 right-sided) and 19 healthy controls underwent diffusion-weighted and T1-weighted imaging to assess edge strength, node strength, and global efficiency of the structural connectome.

Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DReSS) is known to cause mortality and long-term sequelae in the pediatric population, however there are no established clinical practice guidelines for the management of pediatric DReSS. We conducted a scoping review, according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, to summarize the currently available data on treatment, mortality, and long-term sequelae of DReSS in children (aged 0-18 years). Data from 644 individuals revealed that various treatment strategies are being used in the management of pediatric DReSS, and strategies were often used in combination.
