The presence of strong barriers to research participation for Black women is indisputable. However, existing evidence supports the possibility of equal levels of participation among members of minoritized populations in past breast cancer (BC) clinical trials (CTs), demonstrating that while these participation barriers undoubtedly exist but are not insurmountable. This work aims to investigate patient-provider conversations to try to illuminate how providers can better engage Black women in communication that will positively influence their perceptions of breast cancer clinical trial participation.

Deciphering the tissue-specific functional effect of Alzheimer risk SNPs with deep genome annotation.

BioData Min

November 2024

Department of Biomedical Engineering and Informatics, Indiana University Indianapolis, 420 University Blvd, Indianapolis, IN, 46202, USA.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a highly heritable brain dementia, along with substantial failure of cognitive function. Large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have led to a set of SNPs significantly associated with AD and related traits. GWAS hits usually emerge as clusters where a lead SNP with the highest significance is surrounded by other less significant neighboring SNPs.

Dramatic advances in the management of congenital heart disease (CHD) have improved survival to adulthood from less than 10% in the 1960s to over 90% in the current era, such that adult CHD (ACHD) patients now outnumber their pediatric counterparts. ACHD patients demonstrate domain-specific neurocognitive deficits associated with reduced quality of life that include deficits in educational attainment and social interaction. Our hypothesis is that ACHD patients exhibit vascular brain injury and structural/physiological brain alterations that are predictive of specific neurocognitive deficits modified by behavioral and environmental enrichment proxies of cognitive reserve (e.

Background And Purpose: Ultrasound (US) is a non-invasive, non-radiographic imaging technique with high spatial and temporal resolution that can be used for localizing soft-tissue structures and tumors in real-time during radiotherapy (RT) (inter- and intra-fraction). A comprehensive approach incorporating an in-house 3D-US system within RT is presented. This system is easier to adopt into existing treatment protocols than current US based systems, with the aim of providing millimeter intra-fraction alignment errors and sensitivity to track intra-fraction bladder movement.
