Lumpectomy, also called breast-conserving surgery, has become the standard surgical treatment for early-stage breast cancer. However, accurately locating the tumor during a lumpectomy, especially when the lesion is small and nonpalpable, is a challenge. Such difficulty can lead to either incomplete tumor removal or prolonged surgical time, which result in high re-operation rates (~25%) and increased surgical costs.

Purpose: To compare the cross-sectional imaging findings of immunoglobulin G4-related sclerosing cholangiopathy (IgG4-SC) and cholangiocarcinoma (CCA).

Methods: Retrospective search of radiology and pathology databases identified 24 patients with IgG4-SC and over 500 patients with CCA from January 2009 to December 2016. Patients with no pre-treatment imaging studies available on PACS, non-contrasted imaging only, presence of mass lesions, metastatic disease or biliary stents were excluded.

Abdom Radiol (NY)

March 2019

Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences, Indiana University School of Medicine, 550 N University Blvd, Indianapolis, IN, 46202, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to investigate how age and gender affect the size of the pancreas and its duct diameter using MRCP in 280 patients aged 20-88 without pancreatic or liver disease.
  • - Results showed that males had larger pancreatic heads and bodies than females, with gland size in males increasing until age 60-69 before declining, while females experienced a continuous decrease in gland size with age; duct diameter increased for both genders as they aged.
  • - Conclusions indicate significant gender differences in pancreatic gland size, with males' size peaking in middle age and both genders experiencing reduced size after age 80, while duct diameter increased with age for everyone.

Chronic pancreatitis is an inflammatory condition of the pancreas with clinical manifestations ranging from abdominal pain, acute pancreatitis, exocrine and/or endocrine dysfunction, and pancreatic cancer. There is a need for longitudinal studies in well-phenotyped patients to ascertain the utility of cross-sectional imaging findings of chronic pancreatitis for diagnosis and assessment of disease severity. CT and MR cholangiopancreatography are the most common cross-sectional imaging studies performed for the evaluation of chronic pancreatitis.

June 2018

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, 206 S Martin Jischke Dr., West Lafayette, Indiana, 47907, USA.

Conventional methods for breast tumor margins assessment need a long turnaround time, which may lead to re-operation for patients undergoing lumpectomy surgeries. Photoacoustic tomography (PAT) has been shown to visualize adipose tissue in small animals and human breast. Here, we demonstrate a customized multimodal ultrasound and PAT system for intraoperative breast tumor margins assessment using fresh lumpectomy specimens from 66 patients.

Department of BioHealth Informatics, School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis, Office: 119 Walker Plaza (WK), 719 Indiana Avenue, Indianapolis, IN, 46202, USA.

Open-source development can provide a platform for innovation by seeking feedback from community members as well as providing tools and infrastructure to test new standards. Vendors of proprietary systems may delay adoption of new standards until there are sufficient incentives such as legal mandates or financial incentives to encourage/mandate adoption. Moreover, open-source systems in healthcare have been widely adopted in low- and middle-income countries and can be used to bridge gaps that exist in global health radiology.

Rationale: Desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (DESI-MS) has demonstrated utility in differentiating tumor from adjacent normal tissue in both urologic and neurosurgical specimens. We sought to evaluate if this technique had similar accuracy in differentiating oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) from adjacent normal epithelium due to current issues with late diagnosis of SCC in advanced stages.

Methods: Fresh frozen samples of SCC and adjacent normal tissue were obtained by surgical resection.

The Present Status of Fecal Microbiota Transplantation and Its Value in the Elderly.

Curr Treat Options Gastroenterol

September 2017

Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine, Indiana University School of Medicine, 550 N. University Blvd, Suite 1602, Indianapolis, IN, 46202, USA.

Opinion Statement: PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article will review current literature describing fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in the treatment of various diseases, and its potential role in elderly patients (age ≥ 65 years).

Recent Findings: Research on FMT has blossomed in the last decade and its pivotal role in the treatment of recurrent Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) has been recognized by the American College of Gastroenterology in the latest guidelines. There is also emerging evidence that FMT may be beneficial in the treatment of severe and/or complicated CDI refractory to medical therapy, resulting in decreased rates of colectomy and mortality.

Objective: A relatively large proportion of patients with Crohn disease (CD) develop complications including abscess formation, stricture, and penetrating disease. A subset of patients will have genital and reproductive organ involvement of CD, resulting in significant morbidity. These special circumstances create unique management challenges that must be tailored to the activity, location, and extent of disease.
