Objectives: Echocardiography is an essential diagnostic modality known to have wide regional utilization variations. This study's objectives were to quantify regional variations and to examine the extent to which they are explained by differences in population age, sex, cardiac disease prevalence (CDP), and social determinants of health (SDH) risk.

Methods: This is an observational study of all echocardiography exams performed in Ontario in 2019/20 (n = 695,622).

Ontario publicly funds reference trastuzumab (Herceptin) and four biosimilar trastuzumab products for adjuvant treatment of HER2+ breast cancer. We assessed the real-world safety and effectiveness of biosimilar trastuzumab compared to Herceptin for adjuvant treatment of patients with HER2+ breast cancer. This was a population-based, retrospective study comparing the safety and effectiveness of biosimilar trastuzumab and Herceptin for neoadjuvant/adjuvant treatment of HER2+ breast cancer from 2016 to 2021.

The effect of age on the opportunity to receive cancer treatment.

Cancer Epidemiol

December 2022

Ontario Health (Cancer Care Ontario), 525 University Ave, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Division of Thoracic Surgery, Toronto General Hospital, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Introduction: Older adults with cancer may not receive the same opportunities for treatment as younger patients. In this retrospective population-based cohort study, we explored whether age was an independent predictor of receiving specialist consultation and treatment.

Methods: Patients age 45-99 were identified from the Ontario Cancer Registry having a primary solid tumor diagnosed between 01/Jan/2010 and 31/Dec/2019.

Introduction: Physician engagement is crucial for furthering patient safety and quality improvement within healthcare organizations. Medical Safety Huddles, which are physician-specific huddles, is a novel way to engage physicians with patient safety and may reduce adverse events experienced by patients. We plan to conduct a multi-center quality improvement (QI) initiative to implement and evaluate Medical Safety Huddles.

Introduction: While no direct comparative data exist for crizotinib in ROS1+ non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), studies have suggested clinical benefit with this targeted agent. The objective of this study was to assess the cost-effectiveness of crizotinib compared to standard platinum-doublet chemotherapy for first-line treatment of ROS1+ advanced NSCLC.

Methods: A Markov model was developed with a 10-year time horizon from the perspective of the Canadian publicly-funded health care system.

Background: Physical activity is central to chronic disease prevention. Low resource mothers face structural barriers preventing them from increasing their physical activity to reduce their chronic disease risk. We co-designed an intervention, with the ultimate goal of building social cohesion through social media to increase physical activity for low resourced mothers in urban settings.

Background: Evidence for the central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) bundle effectiveness remains mixed, possibly reflecting implementation challenges and persistent ambiguities in how CLABSIs are counted and bundle adherence measured. In the context of a tertiary pediatric hospital that had reduced CLABSI by 30% as part of an international safety program, we aimed to examine unit-based socio-cultural factors influencing bundle practices and measurement, and how they come to be recognized and attended to by safety leaders over time in an organization-wide bundle implementation effort.

Methods: We used an interpretivist qualitative research approach, based on 74 interviews, approximately 50 h of observations, and documents.

Clinical Programs & Quality Initiatives, Ontario Health (Cancer Care Ontario), 525 University Ave, Toronto, Ontario, M5G 2L3, Canada. Electronic address:

Objective: The development of patient education (PE) materials is costly and resource-intensive, and no mechanisms exist for sharing materials across cancer centers/hospitals to limit duplicated effort. The aim of this study was to explore the incidence and cost implication of duplicated PE efforts.

Methods: PE leaders from all (14) cancer centers in Ontario, Canada, submitted their collections of systemic therapy PE materials.

Interprofessional and multiprofessional approaches in quality improvement education.

Adv Health Sci Educ Theory Pract

May 2021

Centre for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety, University of Toronto, 525 University Ave., Suite 630, Toronto, ON, M5G 2L3, Canada.

The imperative for all healthcare professionals to partake in quality improvement (QI) has resulted in the development of QI education programs with participants from different professional backgrounds. However, there is limited empirical and theoretical examination as to why, when and how interprofessional and multiprofessional education occurs in QI and the outcomes of these approaches. This paper reports on a qualitative collective case study of interprofessional and multiprofessional education in three longitudinal QI education programs.

Background: Silica and asbestos are recognized lung carcinogens. However, their role in carcinogenesis at other organs is less clear. Clearance of inhaled silica particles and asbestos fibers from the lungs may lead to translocation to sites such as the bladder where they may initiate carcinogenesis.

Objective: To estimate the association between legal age of consent and coverage of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing among adolescents in countries with high HIV-burden.

Methods: We analysed data from adolescents aged 15-18 years, who participated in Demographic and Health Surveys or AIDS Indicator Surveys between 2011 and 2016, in 15 sub-Saharan African countries. To improve balance in the distribution of measured individual- and country-level characteristics, we used propensity score matching between adolescents in countries with more versus less restrictive age-of-consent laws (≤ 15 years versus ≥ 16 years).
