Purpose: LGBTQ+ individuals experience multiple challenges receiving quality care at the end of life, such as lack of confidence in the healthcare system to address their needs and lack of knowledge about advance care planning. Important gaps remain about the needs of LGBTQ+ individuals in the provider-patient relationship and how critical discussions about the end of life occur or do not occur in that relationship. The purpose of this study is to explore patients' narratives of their relationship with their provider and their experiences discussing end-of-life care with their providers, among patients who do and do not identify as LGBTQ+.

The urgent need to expand enrollment in Alzheimer's disease and related dementia (ADRD) research has synergized calls for an empiric science of research recruitment, yet, progress in this area is hindered by challenges to measuring views toward ADRD research. This paper reports ethical and methodological considerations identified through a prospective qualitative study investigating ADRD patient and caregiver views on research recruitment and participation surrounding acute illness. Ethical and methodological considerations were identified through a combination of memoing, collaboration with a Community Advisory Board (CAB), and analysis of interview data from ADRD patients ( = 3) and/or caregivers ( = 28).

Canine acanthomatous ameloblastoma (CAA) appears to have variable biological behavior with some tumors presenting with slow growth and minimal bone loss while others grow rapidly and cause severe cancellous and cortical bone destruction. The primary aim of the study is to elucidate if variations (grades) of CAA can be identified based on both histological and diagnostic imaging indices, and to compare markers of more aggressive behavior between these 2 commonly used diagnostic tools. This study evaluated 45 cases of CAA and confirmed that there is high degree of variability in tumor invasiveness as measured with computed tomography, with predominantly intraosseous tumors being significantly associated with more invasive behavior.

Background: Due to global immaturity, very low birthweight (VLBW) infants (<1,500 g) require auxiliary thermal and respiratory care. However, the impact of respiratory care on infant thermal stability remains unclear.
Aims: Examine the association between VLBW infant body temperatures over time and respiratory support type (mechanical ventilation (MV), continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), room air (RA)), respiratory care interventions, and nursing care.

Introduction: Current research in the areas of liver transplant and cognitive function has primarily examined cognitive changes from pre- to 1-year posttransplant, resulting in an insufficient understanding of cognitive trajectory beyond early periods of transplant and its impact on self-management. This study aimed (1) to describe global and domain-specific cognitive function in liver transplant recipients who survived more than 6 months after transplant and (2) to describe patient and clinical characteristics of recipients with impaired global and/or domain-specific cognitive function. Further, this study explored the potential relationships between cognitive function and self-management by examining differences in cognitive function by levels of self-management.

Background: The effects of delayed graft function on long-term kidney allograft outcomes are poorly defined among simultaneous liver and kidney transplant recipients.
Methods: We analyzed data of all simultaneous liver and kidney recipients transplanted at the University of Wisconsin between 2010 and 2017. Risk factors for the development of delayed graft function, kidney graft failure, and patient mortality were outcomes of interest.

While collecting high quality data from physicians is critical, response rates for physician surveys are frequently low. A proven method for increasing response in mail surveys is to provide a small, prepaid monetary incentive in the initial mailing. More recently, researchers have begun experimenting with adding a second cash incentive in a follow-up contact in order to increase participation among more reluctant respondents.

Provided the complexity of managing dementia-related neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS), accurate communication about these symptoms at hospital discharge is critical to facilitating safe and effective transitions, particularly transitions from hospitals to skilled nursing facilities (SNF), which are often poorly managed. Skilled nursing facilities providers have cited undercommunication regarding NPS as a major challenge that contributes to poor outcomes including rehospitalization. This multisite retrospective cohort study identified omission rates for NPS and associated management strategies in discharge communication as compared to medical record documentation in the 72 hours preceding discharge among hospitalized patients with dementia.

Ketogenic therapy is now an accepted treatment for pediatric and adult patients with medically refractory epilepsy. However, young adults treated with a ketogenic diet face unique challenges when transitioning to adult neurology providers. The variable acceptance of dietary therapy, paucity of nutritionists and adult neurology providers educated in dietary therapy, and lack of insurance coverage for dietary education may interfere with transition to adult care.

Purpose: Home food environment, including home food availability and parental food preparation practices, plays a significant role in child diet patterns. Recent evidence suggests that parental psychological stress is related to parental food preparation practices; however, there is limited information about the relationship between parental psychological stress and home food availability. The purpose of the study is to examine the relationships between parental stress, home food availability, child diet patterns, and body mass index (BMI) in families with young children.

Thoracocentesis, a procedure in which air or fluid is removed from the pleural space, is used to relieve respiratory distress, and as a diagnostic procedure in human and veterinary medicine. Veterinary students commonly learn and practice the procedure on canine cadavers which are in limited supply and are not amenable to long-term storage and use. Practicing thoracocentesis on a cadaveric model also provides limited feedback indicative of success and/or procedural complications.
