Electroencephalography could serve as an objective tool to evaluate hearing aid benefit in infants who are developmentally unable to participate in hearing tests. We investigated whether speech-evoked envelope following responses (EFRs), a type of electroencephalography-based measure, could predict improved audibility with the use of a hearing aid in children with mild-to-severe permanent, mainly sensorineural, hearing loss. In 18 children, EFRs were elicited by six male-spoken band-limited phonemic stimuli--the first formants of /u/ and /i/, the second and higher formants of /u/ and /i/, and the fricatives /s/ and /∫/--presented together as /su∫i/.

Biol Res Nurs

April 2023

Division of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, School of Public Health, 14681University of Illinois Chicago, Chicago, IL, USA.

Background: Persistently high chronic stress can lead to maladaptive psychological, behavioral, and physiological stress responses and poor mental and physical health, highlighting the importance of identifying individuals at increased risk. Chronic health condition diagnosis and genetics are 2 characteristics that can influence stress, stress response, and health outcomes.

Purpose: Food allergy (FA) and celiac disease (CD) require constant vigilance in daily life and can lead to increased stress.

This study investigated the association between caregiving time and depressive symptoms among Chinese adult children aged 45 and above, and whether early-life relationships with parents moderated the association. We used data from the 2011, 2013, and 2018 waves of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and the 2014 CHARLS Life History Survey, which included 4781 respondents with living mothers and 2710 respondents with living fathers. Results from multilevel models showed that caregiving time for mothers or fathers was not significantly associated with adults' depressive symptoms in general.

Rates of interpersonal violence have largely remained stagnant over the past three decades, despite the magnitude of prevention and response efforts to address this issue. Although interpersonal violence researchers have stressed the importance of partnerships between researchers and campus and community-based practitioners, there is still a disconnect between the work done by researchers and those engaged in direct practice in the field. This special issue brings together researchers and practitioners to explore a variety of challenges and successes in identifying common goals, building relationships, and improving strategies for addressing interpersonal violence using researcher-practitioner models.

Department of Biostatistics and Medical Informatics, 5228University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA.

The win ratio approach proposed by Pocock et al. (2012) has become a popular tool for analyzing composite endpoints of death and non-fatal events like hospitalization. Its standard version, however, draws on the non-fatal event only through the first occurrence.

Background: Synergy analysis provides a means of quantifying the complexity of neuromuscular control during gait. Prior studies have shown evidence of reduced neuromuscular complexity during gait in individuals with neurological disorders associated with stroke, cerebral palsy, and Parkinson's disease.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate neuromuscular complexity during gait in individuals who experienced a prior traumatic brain injury (TBI) that resulted in chronic balance deficits.

Background: Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is one of the most common disorders of adolescence and results in marked impairments in social and academic/occupational activities that likely to persist into adulthood. Multiple etiological factors contribute to the development of social anxiety disorder. Two critical factors in presenting with a primary diagnosis of SAD might be adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and attachment styles.

Theories on the cause of mental and emotional distress contribute to illness course and treatment. The theorizing of women's experience "as problem" has been widely critiqued by feminist psychologists yet continues in clinical practice. This qualitative study reports on data collected in a psychiatric outpatient clinic in south/central Mexico on the culturally embedded causal theories of mental illness among Mexican patients, a family member or caregiver, and their psychiatrists.

Behavioral health services specifically targeted for ethnoracial clients are typically tailored to the specific needs and preferences of these populations; however, little research has been done with American Indian clients specifically. To better understand how clinicians handle provision of treatment to this population, we interviewed 28 behavioral health staff at six Urban Indian Health Programs in the United States and conducted focus groups with 23 staff at five such programs. Thematic analysis of transcripts from these interviews and focus groups suggests that these staff attempt to blend and tailor empirically supported treatments with American Indian cultural values and practices where possible.

In complex listening environments, children can benefit from auditory spatial cues to understand speech in noise. When a spatial separation is introduced between the target and masker and/or listening with two ears versus one ear, children can gain intelligibility benefits with access to one or more auditory cues for unmasking: monaural head shadow, binaural redundancy, and interaural differences. This study systematically quantified the contribution of individual auditory cues in providing binaural speech intelligibility benefits for children with normal hearing between 6 and 15 years old.

Objective: Optimal medical therapy for acute lower extremity deep venous thrombosis (DVT) remains an enigma. While clinical trials demonstrate non-inferiority with an oral anti-Xa inhibitor, or direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC), versus combined low-molecular weight heparin (LMWH) and oral vitamin K antagonist (VKA), the most effective regimen remains to be determined.

Methods: This study is a single-center retrospective cohort study from October 2014 to December 2015 of patients with a diagnosis of acute DVT and subsequent serial lower extremity venous duplex.

Article Synopsis
  • Propensity score matching is a popular technique in observational studies to analyze treatment effects, especially in medical research involving competing risks for patient outcomes.
  • This study addresses the lack of existing research that combines propensity score matching with competing risk survival data, particularly when there are missing causes of failure.
  • The authors provide guidelines for handling this data issue, test various methods for imputing missing information through simulations, and apply their findings to analyze the risk of a specific liver cancer in patients with chronic hepatitis B and C.

This study examined whether homeownership is associated with life satisfaction and depressive symptoms among older adults aged 65 or over and whether these associations differ by gender. This study further distinguished mortgagors from owner-occupiers. Using six waves of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing ( = 3540), we used generalized estimating equations as well as random- and fixed-effects regression analyses.
