Background: Atypical fibroxanthomas (AFX) are rare malignant cutaneous neoplasms. Unfortunately, limited clinicopathologic and outcomes data on this cancer exists.

Objective: We report the clinical, pathologic, and treatment characteristics, as well as oncologic outcomes in this single-institution retrospective analysis.

Objective: The study estimates the number of years after age 65 that Mexican Americans live with likely dementia and the impact of dementia on community-based services (CBS) use by nativity.

Methods: Using the Hispanic Established Populations for the Epidemiologic Studies of the Elderly Sullivan methods are employed to predict duration of dementia and logistic regressions identify the predictors of service utilization.

Results: Foreign-born women spend more years than other groups with dementia.

Emerging evidence suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impacted survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault (DV/SA). This research note explores DV/SA service providers' ( = 20) perceptions of how their organizations responded to the pandemic. Results of a thematic content analysis indicated that survivors were adversely affected by sheltering with abusive partners and by external environmental conditions.

Letter to the Editor Regarding Eosinophilic Otitis Media.

Ear Nose Throat J

February 2023

Pan American Society of Otolaryngology, Private Practice, Associates in ENT & Allergy, Springfield, NJ, USA.

We commend Varghese for "mandating a different outlook" in their recent article on eosinophilic otitis media (EOM). Their statements are supported by medical literature dating back to 1931, reported by Proetz, Shambaugh, Zhang, Draper, Doyle, Pelikan, Ojala, McMahan, Tomonaga, Nsouli, Lasisi, Nguyen, Tian, Sobol, Smirnova, Shim, Smirnova, Luong, and ourselves. Allergy causes EOM and it responds to immunotherapy.

A 6-month-old male was admitted to the children's hospital for management of an underlying gastrointestinal illness. During his admission, a large, pulsatile mass was incidentally noted in the left upper arm concerning for an expanding pseudoaneurysm. Vascular surgery was consulted, and further workup with a CT angiogram demonstrated a brachial artery aneurysm 3 cm in greatest diameter.

Axillary artery injury is a rare but complex surgical problem that often requires challenging exposures, lengthy operations, and morbid outcomes for repair. For these reasons, endovascular repair is an attractive alternative as it obviates many of the challenges present with open repair. While pseudoaneurysms, dissections, and short segment injuries with limited arterial disruption are regularly treated endovascularly, complete arterial transections are almost exclusively treated with open repair as obtaining wire access across the site of injury is often not possible.

Healthcare workers worldwide have been exposed to extraordinary stress during COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to investigate health-related quality of life (HRQoL) level and its health and occupational associated factors among Jordanian physicians during COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional design using an online survey was adopted targeting physicians at different Jordanian hospitals.

Preparation for exploration class space flight requires planning to support human life in many circumstances including healthcare emergencies such as the need for acute surgical care, a notable example of which is appendicitis. Although performing a laparoscopic appendectomy on Earth is routine for a trained general surgeon, it is far from routine for a non-surgeon working in microgravity where IVs do not drip, drains do not drain, and gaseous anesthetic is out of the question. Because the procedure for laparoscopic appendectomy is so well documented, it was the ideal procedure on which to base a study on how to deconstruct a surgical procedure to examine all actions, skills, equipment, and supplies needed for success by non-surgeons working in an extreme environment.

To determine the frequency, predictors, and outcomes of seizures in patients with myelomeningocele, we retrospectively analyzed the data from patients with myelomeningocele followed longitudinally at a single center from 1975 to 2013. We identified a total of 122 patients (61% female). The mean follow-up duration was 11.

Spatiotemporal Expression and Functional Analysis of miRNA-22 in the Developing Secondary Palate.

Cleft Palate Craniofac J

January 2023

Department of Oral Immunology and Infectious Diseases, Division of Craniofacial Development and Anomalies, School of Dentistry, 5170University of Louisville, Louisville, KY 40202.

Objective: Normal development of the embryonic orofacial region requires precise spatiotemporal coordination between numerous genes. MicroRNAs represent small, single-stranded, non-coding molecules that regulate gene expression. This study examines the role of microRNA-22 (miR-22) in murine orofacial ontogeny.

ObjectivesMexican Americans live longer on average than other ethnic groups, but often with protracted cognitive and physical disability. Little is known, however, about the role of cognitive decline for transitions in instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) disability and tertiary outcomes of the IADL disablement for the oldest old (after 80 years old). We employ the Hispanic Established Populations for the Epidemiologic Study of the Elderly (2010-2011, 2012-2013, and 2016, = 1,078) to investigate the longitudinal patterns of IADL decline using latent transition analysis.

Sexual assault and case attrition at the arrest stage are serious problems in the United States. Focal concerns have increasingly been used to explain police decision making in sexual assault cases. Because of the popularity of the focal concerns perspective and potential to inform evidence-based training, a systematic review and meta-analysis are needed to condense the literature.

Dysphagia Lusoria is a condition when aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA) causes esophageal compression. We report 2 cases of Dysphagia Lusoria treated by hybrid endovascular technique which included subclavian to carotid transposition and embolization of origin of ARSA. By using this technique, we avoided the need for thoracotomy.

Variance estimation in tests of clustered categorical data with informative cluster size.

Stat Methods Med Res

November 2020

Department of Bioinformatics and Biostatistics, 5170University of Louisville, Louisville, KY, USA.

In the analysis of clustered data, inverse cluster size weighting has been shown to be resistant to the potentially biasing effects of informative cluster size, where the number of observations within a cluster is associated with the outcome variable of interest. The method of inverse cluster size reweighting has been implemented to establish clustered data analogues of common tests for independent data, but the method has yet to be extended to tests of categorical data. Many variance estimators have been implemented across established cluster-weighted tests, but potential effects of differing methods on test performance has not previously been explored.

Background: Delays in time to therapeutic activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) have been associated with poor outcomes in patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE).

Objective: To investigate the relationship between time to therapeutic anticoagulation and in-hospital mortality in critically ill, obese patients with acute PE.

Methods: This study examined 204 critically ill patients with a body mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m receiving unfractionated heparin (UFH) for PE treatment.
