Intergenerational solidarity and ambivalence paradigms suggest that emotional relationships between generations consist of both positive and negative sentiments. We applied latent class analysis to measures of affection and conflict in 2,698 older parent - child relationships in 6 developed nations: England, Germany, Israel, Norway, Spain, and the United States (Southern California). The best fitting model consisted of 4 latent classes distributed differently across nations but with a cross-nationally invariant measurement structure.

On-capillary derivatization using a hybrid artificial neural network-genetic algorithm approach.

The first reported hybrid artificial neural network-genetic algorithm (ANN-GA) approach for the optimization of on-capillary dipeptide derivatization is presented. More specifically, genetic optimization proved valuable in the determination of effective network structure with three defined parameter inputs: (i) phthalic anhydride injection volume, (ii) time of injection, and (iii) voltage, for the maximum conversion of the dipeptide D-Ala-D-Ala by phthalic anhydride. Results obtained from the hybrid approach proved superior to an ANN model without GA optimization in terms of training data and predictive ability.

Development of microfluidic chips for heterogeneous receptor-ligand interaction studies.

A simple microfluidic-based technique to quantitate the binding affinity between the glycopeptide antibiotics teicoplanin from Actinoplanes teicomyceticus and vancomycin from Streptomyces orientalis and 5-carboxyfluorescein-D-Ala-D-Ala-D-Ala (5-FAM-(DA)(3)) is described. In this work, (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane is used to modify the surfaces of a series of microchannels, and each channel is subsequently exposed to a solution of antibiotic for a few minutes. The antibiotic is retained after washing through electrostatic interactions, and the series of channels are subsequently exposed to an increasing concentration of 5-FAM-(DA)(3) followed by washing to exclude any nonspecific binding.

Differential behavioral and neurochemical effects of exercise, reboxetine and citalopram with the forced swim test.

Aims: In this study, we investigated whether short-term exercise, known to promote hippocampal brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression, would also enhance activity in the Porsolt forced swim test (FST), a model for assessing antidepressant efficacy. We also wished to determine whether exercise combined with antidepressants would be more effective at modifying behavior in the FST than either intervention alone. In parallel with this, we also expected that these interventions would preserve post-stress levels of BDNF, and that antidepressants designed to selectively enhance noradrenergic or serotonergic neurotransmission (reboxetine or citalopram, respectively) would have differential effects on behavior and BDNF expression.

The model binding of the glycopeptide antibiotic teicoplanin (Teic) from Actinoplanes teichomyceticus, immobilized on magnetic microspheres, to D-Ala-D-Ala terminus peptides was assessed using microchip capillary electrophoresis (MCE) with continuous frontal analysis (FA). Teic is closely related to vancomycin (Van), historically, the drug of last resort used to treat many gram-positive bacterial infections. Glycopeptide antibiotics inhibit bacterial growth by binding to the D-Ala-D-Ala terminus on the cell wall of gram-positive bacteria via hydrogen bonds, thereby preventing the enzyme-mediated cross-linking of peptidoglycan and eventual cell death.

A light-controlled reversible binding switch based on photochromic 3H-naphtho[2,1-b]pyran is under development for studying cellular oscillatory calcium signals. The binding affinities of the closed and open forms of substituted naphthopyran 1 for Ca(2+), Mg(2+), and Sr(2+) in buffer were determined. The photochemically ring-opened form of the receptor exhibited increased affinity compared to the thermally stable closed form of the receptor.

Nitric oxide signaling participates in norepinephrine-induced activity of neuronal intracellular survival pathways.

Much evidence has gathered that nitric oxide (NO) signaling, via cGMP-dependent mechanisms, may activate pro-survival pathways in hippocampal neurons and inhibit apoptosis. Past research has revealed that the enhancement of monoaminergic neurotransmission via exercise or treatment with antidepressant medications leads to an enhanced expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). In isolated hippocampal neurons, norepinephrine (NE) application also increases the immunoreactivity of BDNF and several pro-survival signaling molecules.

It is known that physical exercise increases hippocampal brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) mRNA and protein, as well as the expression of several pro-survival signaling proteins and that many of these effects depend on the uptake of peripheral insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) into the CNS. Because treatment with antidepressants has similar effects upon neurotrophin expression, we investigated whether antidepressant-induced BDNF changes also depend on IGF-1 uptake, as well as whether IGF-1 plays a role in the exercise/antidepressant-induced expression of molecules associated with plasticity/growth (GAP-43, SCG-10) and the intracellular activation of molecules associated with neuronal survival (Akt, ERK1/2). We evaluated the effects of a well known monoamine oxidase inhibitor, tranylcypromine, on BDNF mRNA and protein levels and phospho-Akt and phospho-ERK1/2 immunoreactivity, both with and without systemic blockade of IGF-1 uptake through the use of an antiserum raised against IGF-1.

This paper describes the development and study of a disposable and inexpensive microfluidic chip, fabricated from poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) incorporating conventional chromatographic reversed-phase silica particles (C18) without the use of frits, permanent physical barriers, tapers, or restrictors. The packing of C18 modified silica particles into the microfluidic channels is made possible by the hydrophobic nature and excellent elasticity of PDMS. Keystone-, clamping-, and anchor-effects provide the stability and the compactness of the packing and attenuated wall-effects were observed.

Evolution of poecilogony from planktotrophy: cryptic speciation, phylogeography, and larval development in the gastropod genus Alderia.

Poecilogony, a rare phenomenon in marine invertebrates, occurs when alternative larval morphs differing in dispersal potential or trophic mode are produced from a single genome. Because both poecilogony and cryptic species are prevalent among sea slugs in the suborder Sacoglossa (Gastropoda: Opisthobranchia), molecular data are needed to confirm cases of variable development and to place them in a phylogenetic context. The nominal species Alderia modesta produces long-lived, feeding larvae throughout the North Atlantic and Pacific, but in California can also produce short-lived larvae that metamorphose without feeding.

This exploratory study examined frequency of self-reported cervical and breast cancer screening rates in a multiethnic sample of 331 female university students. In general, rates of lifetime screening were fairly low, with only 41% reporting having ever had a PAP examination and 44% reporting having undergone at least one clinical breast examination. Screening rates differed by ethnicity.

VT (129)Xe NMR was applied to probe the interactions of solvents having different polarity indices with the stationary phase of a RP-C18 HPLC column material. It was observed that the highly polar ethylene glycol molecules do not mix with the alkyl chains of the RP-C18 stationary phase and the solvent is unable to enter the pores and the spaces between the particles. Three phases in this sample are defined as stationary/xenon phase, xenon gas phase (in the pores and the spaces between the particles) and ethylene glycol/xenon phase.

The averaging of scores differs from the averaging of numbers in that behavioral issues are built into scores. The behavioral issues are the weight attached to a score and the metric on which the scores have been gathered. A single equation is proposed, derived from Aczél's (1966) model of the quasilinear mean, that encompasses the standard measures of central tendency.
