Two new flexible-monomer two-body ab initio potential energy surfaces (PESs) for the neon and krypton van der Waals complexes with carbon dioxide were developed, extending our previous work on the Ar-CO molecule. The accuracy of the PESs was validated by their agreement with the vibrational spectrum of the rare-gas complexes. The intermolecular and intramolecular vibrational excitation energies were computed at the vibrational self-consistent field and vibrational configuration interaction levels of theory.

Our world is becoming increasingly urbanized with a growing human population concentrated around cities. The expansion of urban areas has important consequences for biodiversity, yet the abiotic drivers of biodiversity in urban ecosystems have not been well characterized for the most diverse group of animals on the planet, arthropods. Given their great diversity, comparatively small home ranges, and ability to disperse, arthropods make an excellent model for studying which factors can most accurately predict urban biodiversity.

Zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) have been demonstrated as potent catalysts for the hydrolytic detoxification of organophosphorus nerve agents and their simulants. However, the practical implementation of these Zr-MOFs is limited by the poor processability of their powdered form and the necessity of water media buffered by a volatile liquid base in the catalytic reaction. Herein, we demonstrate the efficient solid-state hydrolysis of a nerve agent simulant (dimethyl-4-nitrophenyl phosphate, DMNP) catalyzed by Zr-MOF-based mixed matrix membranes.

We set out to determine whether the C-terminus (amino acids 481-798) of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1 alpha (PGC-1α, UniProt Q9UBK2), a regulatory metabolic protein involved in mitochondrial biogenesis, and respiration, is an arginine methyltransferase substrate. Arginine methylation by protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs) alters protein function and thus contributes to various cellular processes. In addition to confirming methylation of the C-terminus by PRMT1 as described in the literature, we have identified methylation by another member of the PRMT family, PRMT7.

We tested the good genes ovulatory shift hypothesis through speed-dating, an ecologically valid paradigm with real life consequences. Fifteen speed-dating sessions of 262 single Asian Americans were held. We analyzed 850 speed-dates involving 132 men and 100 normally ovulating women, finding ovulatory shifts in the desirability of men with more masculine facial measurements (smaller eye-mouth-eye angle, larger lower face to full face height ratio, and smaller facial width to lower face height ratio) in the predicted direction.

We present a multifaceted approach to effectively probe complex local protein environments utilizing the vibrational reporter unnatural amino acid (UAA) 4-cyano-l-phenylalanine (pCNPhe) in the model system superfolder green fluorescent protein (sfGFP). This approach combines temperature-dependent infrared (IR) spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to provide a molecular interpretation of the local environment of the nitrile group in the protein. Specifically, a two-step enantioselective synthesis was developed that provided an 87% overall yield of pCNPhe in high purity without the need for chromatography.

Background: Regular physical activity (PA) contributes to positive health outcomes, but a minority of US adults meet minimum guidelines for moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) and muscle-strengthening, and Latinos are less likely than whites to meet these guidelines. Public parks can be leveraged for community PA but tend to be underutilized, while churches have reach within Latino communities and can influence parishioners' health.
Methods: We are conducting a cluster randomized controlled trial to examine the impact of a multilevel, faith-based intervention linking Catholic parishes (n = 14) to their local parks on adult Latino parishioners' (n = 1204) MVPA and health-related outcomes.

We developed an integrated device composed of a single-probe Electroencephalogram (EEG) and Charge Coupled Device (CCD) based motion sensors for objective measurement of Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). While the measurement of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (MAHD) relies on the EEG signal for the assessment of attention during a given structured task, the CCD sensor depicts the movement pattern of the subjects engaged in a continuous performance task. A statistical analysis of attention and movement patterns was performed, and the accuracy of completed tasks was analyzed using indigenously developed software.

Crystalline porous materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), have been demonstrated to be versatile material platforms for the development of solid proton conductors. However, most crystalline porous proton conductors suffer from decreasing proton conductivity with increasing temperature due to releasing water molecules, and this disadvantage severely restricts their practical application in electrochemical devices. In this work, for the first time, hydrophilic carbon dots (CDs) were utilized to hybridize with high proton conductivity MOF-802, which is a model of MOF proton conductors, aiming to improve its water-retention capacity and thus enhance proton conduction.

Metastatic melanoma accounts for the highest number of skin cancer-related deaths. Traditional treatments are ineffective due to their inability to induce tumor regression at a high rate. Newer treatments such as immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI), targeted therapy (BRAFi and MEKi), and T cell receptor (TCR)-engineered T cells aim to increase the ability of the host immune system to recognize and eradicate tumors.

Feedbacks are an essential feature of resilient socio-economic systems, yet the feedbacks between biodiversity, ecosystem services and human wellbeing are not fully accounted for in global policy efforts that consider future scenarios for human activities and their consequences for nature. Failure to integrate feedbacks in our knowledge frameworks exacerbates uncertainty in future projections and potentially prevents us from realizing the full benefits of actions we can take to enhance sustainability. We identify six scientific research challenges that, if addressed, could allow future policy, conservation and monitoring efforts to quantitatively account for ecosystem and societal consequences of biodiversity change.

The Illumina® MiSeq FGx™, in conjunction with the ForenSeq™ DNA Signature Prep kit, produces genotypes of the CODIS-required short tandem repeats and provides phenotype and biogeographical ancestry estimations via phenotype-informative and ancestry-informative markers, respectively. Although both markers have been validated for use in forensic biology, there is little data to determine the practical utility of these estimations to assist in identifying missing persons using decedent casework samples. The accuracy and utility of phenotypic and ancestral estimations were investigated for 300 samples received by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.
