Experimental evidence indicates that follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), an essential hormone for reproduction, can act directly on endothelial cells inducing atherosclerosis activation and development. However, it remains unknown whether the FSH-receptor (FSHR) is expressed in human atherosclerosis plaques. To demonstrate the FSHR presence, we used immunohistochemical and immunoelectron microscopy involving a specific monoclonal antibody FSHR1A02 that recognizes an epitope present in the FSHR-ectodomain.

Background: Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2-inhibitors (SGLT2i) improve cardiovascular outcomes including reduction in risk of first hospitalisation for heart failure (HF), worsening HF and cardiovascular death regardless of HF or diabetes mellitus (DM) status. It is not known whether SGLT2i can prevent the development of incident HF or reduce the risk of HF in patients receiving trastuzumab with or without other concurrent anti-HER2 agent or sequential anthracycline for treatment of HER2 positive breast cancer. Patients with active malignancy or recent history of malignancy were excluded from participating in the main cardiovascular outcome trials involving SGLT2i.

Aims: This study aims to evaluate the ability of a deep-learning-based cardiovascular disease (CVD) retinal biomarker, Reti-CVD, to identify individuals with intermediate- and high-risk for CVD.
Methods And Results: We defined the intermediate- and high-risk groups according to Pooled Cohort Equation (PCE), QRISK3, and modified Framingham Risk Score (FRS). Reti-CVD's prediction was compared to the number of individuals identified as intermediate- and high-risk according to standard CVD risk assessment tools, and sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) were calculated to assess the results.

Extracellular collagen remodeling is one of the central mechanisms responsible for the structural and compositional coherence of myocardium in patients undergoing myocardial infarction (MI). Activated primary cardiac fibroblasts following myocardial infarction are extensively investigated to establish anti-fibrotic therapies to improve left ventricular remodeling. To systematically assess vitamin C functions as a potential modulator involved in collagen fibrillogenesis in an in vitro model mimicking heart tissue healing after MI.

Phospholipids are major components of cell membranes with complex structures, high heterogeneity and critical biological functions and have been used since ancient times to treat cardiovascular disease. Their importance and role were shadowed by the difficulty or incomplete available research methodology to study their biological presence and functionality. This review focuses on the current knowledge about the roles of phospholipids in the pathophysiology and therapy of cardiovascular diseases, which have been increasingly recognized.

The syndrome of heart failure (HF) has historically been dichotomized based on clinical trial inclusion criteria into patients with a reduced or preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) using a cut-off of above or below 40%. The majority of trial evidence for the benefits of disease-modifying pharmacological therapy has been in patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), i.e.

Myocardial infarction is remains the leading cause of death in developed countries. Recent data show that the composition of the extracellular matrix might differ despite similar heart function and infarction sizes. Because collagen is the main component of the extracellular matrix, we hypothesized that changes in inflammatory cell recruitment influence the synthesis of different collagen subtypes in myofibroblasts, thus changing the composition of the scar.

Aim: To determine the prognostic value of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) score in early-stage epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), contrasted against EGFR-wildtype NSCLC.
Methods: Consecutive patients with Stage IA-IIIA NSCLC diagnosed 1st January 2010-31st December 2019 at National Cancer Centre Singapore with evaluable EGFR and PD-L1 status were included. Co-primary end-points were 2-year disease-free survival (DFS) and 5-year overall survival (OS) by Kaplan-Meier method.
Background: Heart failure (HF) is a global challenge, with lower- and middle-income countries (LMICs) carrying a large share of the burden. Treatment for HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) improves survival but is often underused. Economic factors might have an important effect on the use of medicines.

Involvement of the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) in maladaptive cardiac remodeling and heart failure (HF) upon pressure overload has been studied extensively, but less is known about the role of TLR2. Interplay and redundancy of TLR4 with TLR2 have been reported in other organs but were not investigated during cardiac dysfunction. We explored whether TLR2 deficiency leads to less adverse cardiac remodeling upon chronic pressure overload and whether TLR2 and TLR4 additively contribute to this.

The global left ventricular (LV) contractility index, dσ*/dt measures the maximal rate of change in pressure-normalized LV wall stress. We aim to describe the trend of dσ*/dt in differing severity of aortic stenosis (AS) with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and the association of dσ*/dt with clinical outcomes in moderate AS and severe AS. We retrospectively studied a total of 1738 patients with AS (550 mild AS, 738 moderate AS, 450 severe AS) and preserved LVEF ≥ 50% diagnosed from 1 January 2001 to 31 December 2015.

Unlike passive infrared (IR) thermal imaging/thermography, where no external stimulation is applied, active dynamic thermography (ADT) results in a high contrast thermal image. In ADT, transient thermal images of the skin surface are captured using an IR thermal camera while the skin surface is stimulated externally, followed by a recovery phase. Upon the application of external stimulation, the presence of stenosis in the carotid artery is expected to differ the recovery rate of the external neck skin surface from the case with no stenosis.
