Article Synopsis
  • National campaigns like 'Joining Forces' have raised awareness about the healthcare needs of military and veteran populations, but many nurses still lack cultural competency in providing optimal care.
  • The study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, confidence, and comfort levels of nurses and nursing students in caring for veterans and their families, while also identifying factors influencing these measures.
  • Findings indicated that increased knowledge about military culture boosts nurses' confidence and comfort in care, particularly for those with family members who have served in the military; hence, targeted education on veteran care competencies is necessary.

Despite being quite specious (~10,000 extant species), birds have a fairly uniform genome size and karyotype (including the common occurrence of microchromosomes) relative to other vertebrate lineages. Storks (Family Ciconiidae) are a charismatic and distinct group of large wading birds with nearly worldwide distribution but few genomic resources. Here we present an annotated chromosome-level reference genome and chromosome orthology analysis for the wood stork (Mycteria americana), a species that has been federally protected under the Endangered Species Act since 1984.

Acetaminophen changes Mu rhythm power related to pain empathy.

Neuropsychologia

June 2023

Department of Psychology University of South Carolina Aiken, 471 University Parkway, Aiken, SC, 29801, USA.

Empathy is an intricate ability that entails the subjective feeling and understanding of emotions someone else may be experiencing. Acetaminophen, the active ingredient found in Tylenol, is among the most common pain medications consumed. There is new evidence, however, that suggests this common analgesic may also dampen empathic processes.

Research suggests that symptoms of anxiety may result in atypical alpha activity associated with cognitive functioning. It is well documented that symptoms of anxiety are often comorbid with symptoms of depression. However, the combined influence of these symptoms on alpha activity changes between engaged attention states and rest is poorly understood.

Trauma exposure can lead to poor psychological health not only for those directly affected, but also for their children. Additional research is needed to understand mechanisms in the intergenerational sequelae of traumatic stress. The current study examined parenting stress as a moderator of the association between parents' lifetime trauma exposure and school-aged children's internalizing symptoms (N = 139 dyads).

Female biting midges are vectors of epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV), which causes morbidity and mortality in wild and domesticated ruminants. The aims in this study were to identify key changes in female midge transcriptome profiles occurring during early infection with EHDV-2. Midges were fed either negative control bloodmeals or bloodmeals containing EHDV-2 and transcriptomes were acquired at 36 h through deep sequencing.

Article Synopsis
  • - The copper-based metal-organic framework (MOF) HKUST-1 can effectively adsorb organic molecules and initiate oxidative polymerization of electron-rich oligothiophenes when heated, without additional catalysts, unlike the non-redox-active MOF MIL-100(Al).
  • - Various characterization techniques, including spectroscopy and microscopy, show that unsubstituted oligothiophenes polymerize within the pores of the MOF, while 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene forms a coating on its surface.
  • - The composites exhibit significant changes in electronic structure due to the presence of conjugated polymer dopants, and theoretical calculations suggest the reactivity is linked to a ligand-to-metal charge-transfer initiation mechanism.

Introduction: Military Service Members (SMs) with post-concussive symptoms are commonly referred for further evaluation and possible treatment to Department of Defense Traumatic Brain Injury Clinics where neuropsychological screening/evaluations are being conducted. Understudied to date, the base rates of noncredible task engagement/performance validity testing (PVT) during cognitive screening/evaluations in military settings appears to be high. The current study objectives are to: (1) examine the base rates of noncredible PVTs of SMs undergoing routine clinical or Medical Evaluation Board (MEB) related workups using multiple objective performance-based indicators; (2) determine whether involvement in MEB is associated with PVT or symptom exaggeration/symptom validity testing (SVT) results; (3) elucidate which psychiatric symptoms are associated with noncredible PVT performances; and (4) determine whether MEB participation moderates the relationship between psychological symptom exaggeration and whether or not SM goes on to demonstrate PVTs failures - or vice versa.

Salts of the diazonium coupling agent -phenylenebis(diazonium) form diazonium-terminated conjugated thin films on a variety of conductive and nonconductive surfaces by spontaneous reaction of the coupling agent with the surface. The resulting diazonium-bearing surface can be reacted with various organic and inorganic nucleophiles to form a functionalized surface. These surfaces have been characterized with voltammetry, XPS, infrared and Raman spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy.

Background: The negative effects of emotionally invalidating environments are theorized by the biosocial theory of borderline personality disorder to be vast and severe. However, findings from studies on the impact of emotional invalidation (EI) vary, perhaps due to different operational definitions of EI. The current investigation seeks to explore the relationship between the objective behavioural observations of EI and recipient's subjective perceptions of experiencing these behaviours.

Genetic effects are often overlooked in endangered species monitoring, and populations showing positive growth are often assumed to be secure. However, the continued reproductive success of a few individuals may mask issues such as inbreeding depression, especially in long-lived species. Here, we test for inbreeding depression in little spotted kiwi (Apteryx owenii) by comparing a population founded with two birds to one founded with 40 birds, both from the same source population and both showing positive population growth.

Background: Kiwi represent the most basal extant avian lineage (paleognaths) and exhibit biological attributes that are unusual or extreme among living birds, such as large egg size, strong olfaction, nocturnality, flightlessness and long lifespan. Despite intense interest in their evolution and their threatened status, genomic resources for kiwi were virtually non-existent until the recent publication of a single genome. Here we present the most comprehensive kiwi transcriptomes to date, obtained via Illumina sequencing of whole blood and de novo assembly of mRNA sequences of eight individuals from each of the two rarest kiwi species, little spotted kiwi (LSK; Apteryx owenii) and rowi (A.

A transgenic, visual screenable marker for soybean seeds.

Transgenic Res

April 2016

Department of Biology and Geology, University of South Carolina Aiken, 471 University Parkway, Aiken, SC, 29801, USA.

Most soybean cultivars produce buff colored seeds due to a seed coat specific siRNA mechanism. This phenomenon is specifically limited to the seed coat and produces a strong visual effect, thus, a strategy to evade the silencing was used to produce a maternal transgenic marker for soybeans. Expression of a rice chalcone synthase transgene with little DNA sequence homology to the soybean siRNAs resulted in dark colored seed coats.

Background: A key difference between the Tourist and Stowaway families of miniature inverted repeat transposable elements (MITEs) is the manner in which their excision alters the genome. Upon excision, Stowaway-like MITEs and the associated Mariner elements usually leave behind a small duplication and short sequences from the end of the element. These small insertions or deletions known as "footprints" can potentially disrupt coding or regulatory sequences.

Sources of fecal coliform pollution in a small South Carolina (USA) watershed were identified using inexpensive methods and commonly available equipment. Samples from the upper reaches of the watershed were analyzed with 3M(™) Petrifilm(™) count plates. We were able to narrow down the study's focus to one particular tributary, Sand River, that was the major contributor of the coliform pollution (both fecal and total) to a downstream reservoir that is heavily used for recreation purposes.
