The Canadian prairie ecosystem is subjected to abiotic and biotic conditions that induce plants to produce secondary metabolites that affect mammalian physiology. Extracts prepared from certain plant species native to Canadian prairie and montane cordillera ecosystems have previously been shown to have anti-mitotic activity on human cancer cell lines. Four structured acylglycerols with stigmasterol bonded by a succinyl linker were investigated and their stability were analyzed. Samples were heated to 60 °C and kept at that temperature to simulate storage, and to 180 °C to simulate frying conditions. Examining the frequency and distribution of hybrids across contact zones provide insights into the factors mediating hybridization. In this study, we examined the effect of habitat and climate on hybridization patterns for three phenotypically, genetically, and ecologically distinct groups of the Canada jay (Perisoreus canadensis) in a secondary contact zone in western North America. Additionally, we tested whether the frequency of hybridization involving the three groups (referred to as Boreal, Pacific and Rocky Mountain morphotypes) is similar across the hybrid zones or whether some pairs have hybridized more frequently than others.

The safety and thermoxidative stability of new diacyl-stigmasterylcarbonoyl-sn-glycerols (DAStGs) with two molecules of palmitic or oleic acids and one molecule of stigmasterol at the sn-2 or sn-3 position were studied. After heating to 60 °C, the compounds with stigmasterol at the sn-2 position were more stable than those with stigmasterol at the sn-3 position. The lowest level of degradation of stigmasterol after heating to 180 °C was detected for both compounds with oleic acid, followed by the samples with palmitic acid.

In semi-arid ecoregions, trees are restricted to river valley floodplains where river water supplements the limited precipitation. To characterize the associated diurnal and seasonal dynamics in hydrology and water relations, we studied narrowleaf cottonwoods (Populus angustifolia) along a prairie river in Canada. The reasons for these differences are unclear since both lesions similarly alter the Watson-Crick binding face of T. Divergent reactivity of organometallic rhodium(I) complexes, which led to the isolation of neutral rhodium silylenes, is described. Addition of PhRSiH (R=H, Ph) to the rhodium cyclooctene complex ( NNN)Rh(COE) (1-COE; NNN=2,5-[iPr P=N(4-iPrC H )] N(C H ) , COE=cyclooctene) resulted in the oxidative addition of an Si-H bond, providing rhodium(III) silyl hydride complexes ( NNN)Rh(H)SiHRPh (R=H, 2-SiH Ph; Ph, 2-SiHPh ). When the carbonyl complex ( NNN)Rh(CO) (1-CO) was treated with hydrosilanes, base-stabilized rhodium(I) silylenes κ -N,N-( NNN)(CO)Rh=SiRPh (R=H, 3-SiHPh; Ph, 3-SiPh ) were isolated and characterized using multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography.

P-loop NTPases comprise one of the major superfamilies of nucleotide binding proteins, which mediate a variety of cellular processes, such as mRNA translation, signal transduction, cell motility, and growth regulation. In this review, we discuss the structure and function of two members of the ancient Obg-related family of P-loop GTPases: human Obg-like ATPase 1 (hOLA1), and its bacterial/plant homolog, YchF. After a brief discussion of nucleotide binding proteins in general and the classification of the Obg-related family in particular, we discuss the sequence and structural features of YchF and hOLA1.

A variety of cellular stresses lead to global translation attenuation due to phosphorylation of the alpha subunit of eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2), which decreases the availability of the eIF2-GTP-Met-tRNA ternary complex. However, a subset of mRNAs continues to be translated by non-canonical mechanisms under these conditions. In fact, although translation initiation of activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4) is normally repressed by an upstream open reading frame (uORF), a decreased availability of ternary complex leads to increased translation of the main ATF4-coding ORF.
