Spatial periodicity in grid cell firing has been interpreted as a neural metric for space providing animals with a coordinate system in navigating physical and mental spaces. However, the specific computational problem being solved by grid cells has remained elusive. Here, we provide mathematical proof that spatial periodicity in grid cell firing is the only possible solution to a neural sequence code of 2-D trajectories and that the hexagonal firing pattern of grid cells is the most parsimonious solution to such a sequence code.

Arsenic occurs as a natural contaminant of drinking water supplies in arsenic endemic areas, posing a threat to public health. Our aim was to evaluate the relationship between urinary arsenic concentrations and spontaneous pregnancy loss in a population with low-moderate level drinking water arsenic exposure (mostly <10 μg/L). The placenta is a temporary endocrine organ that facilitates gas, nutrient, and waste exchange between maternal and fetal compartments, partially shielding the fetus from potentially hazardous environmental toxicants. However, rather than being "opaque", the placenta is translucent or even transparent to some potential fetal developmental hazards, including toxic trace elements (TEs), perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and environmental phenols (EPs) to which women with pregnancy are frequently exposed. These agents are both passively and actively transferred to the fetal compartment, where endocrine disruption, oxidative stress, and epigenetic changes may occur.

Inland recreational fisheries, found in lakes, rivers, and other landlocked waters, are important to livelihoods, nutrition, leisure, and other societal ecosystem services worldwide. Although recreationally-caught fish are frequently harvested and consumed by fishers, their contribution to food and nutrition has not been adequately quantified due to lack of data, poor monitoring, and under-reporting, especially in developing countries. Beyond limited global harvest estimates, few have explored species-specific harvest patterns, although this variability has implications for fisheries management and food security.

Reliable quantile estimates of annual peak flow discharges (APFDs) are needed for the design and operation of major hydraulic infrastructures and for more general flood risk management and planning. In the present study, linear higher order-moments (LH-moments) and nonparametric kernel functions were applied to APFDs at 18 stream gauge stations in Punjab, Pakistan. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the impacts of different quantile estimation methods towards water resources management and engineering applications by means of comparing the state-of-the-art approaches and their quantile estimates calculated from LH-moments and nonparametric kernel functions.

Comparing the prediction performance of item response theory and machine learning methods on item responses for educational assessments.

To obtain more accurate and robust feedback information from the students' assessment outcomes and to communicate it to students and optimize teaching and learning strategies, educational researchers and practitioners must critically reflect on whether the existing methods of data analytics are capable of retrieving the information provided in the database. This study compared and contrasted the prediction performance of an item response theory method, particularly the use of an explanatory item response model (EIRM), and six supervised machine learning (ML) methods for predicting students' item responses in educational assessments, considering student- and item-related background information. Each of seven prediction methods was evaluated through cross-validation approaches under three prediction scenarios: (a) unrealized responses of new students to existing items, (b) unrealized responses of existing students to new items, and (c) missing responses of existing students to existing items.

The thematic analysis of the data from individual interviews with patients (n = 24) revealed two themes: patients experienced "missteps on an unclear path" and "nurses doing their best.

Our visual system relies on memory to store and retrieve goal-relevant structures and information from the environment for the purpose of optimizing the allocation of attention. This concept, referred to as contextual cueing, has been demonstrated using visual search tasks, wherein repeated visual contexts lead to reduced search times compared with random displays. Subsequently, when an unexpected change occurs in the environment, or memory fails, a cognitive expense is incurred as the mind tries to resolve the conflict with the memory of the previous environmental context.

Falls on icy surfaces are among the top causes of injuries for workers exposed to the outdoor environment. Our recent field study showed that a new generation of winter footwear incorporating composite outsoles was able to reduce slips and falls on icy surfaces by 68% and 78%, respectively. The widespread adoption of this type of footwear may lead to substantial reductions in pain, suffering and costs of fall-related injuries.
