Nosocomial salmonellosis in hospitalized animals is a recognized hazard, especially in large animal clinics. A standardized culture protocol (SCP) for detecting Salmonella spp. in environmental samples using a 48-h enrichment step results in a 5-day turnaround time for negative results.

Infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) infection destroys the bursa of Fabricius, causing immunosuppression and rendering chickens susceptible to secondary bacterial or viral infections. IBDV large-segment-protein-expressing DNA has been shown to confer complete protection of chickens from infectious bursal disease (IBD). The purpose of the present study was to compare DNA-vaccinated chickens and unvaccinated chickens upon IBDV challenge by transcriptomic analysis of bursa regarding innate immunity, inflammation, immune cell regulation, apoptosis and glucose transport.

In humans, cutaneous metastasis of transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) has been attributed to direct extension, lymphatic or hematogenous dissemination, or surgical implantation. The purpose of this study was to characterize the clinical and histologic features of cutaneous TCC metastasis, confirmed by uroplakin-III immunohistochemistry, in dogs. The 12 cases were 9 spayed female and 3 neutered male dogs, 6 to 14 years old (mean, 11 years).

A 5-month-old mongrel puppy with a history of respiratory disease presented with progressive neurologic dysfunction. Hematologic results included leukocytosis (neutrophilia with a left shift) and lymphopenia. A mass in the right forebrain, identified by magnetic resonance imaging, was biopsied during decompressive craniectomy.

Synovial hemangioma was diagnosed in an 8-year-old castrated male Belgian Sheepdog with lameness of 3 months' duration. Pain, soft-tissue swelling, and hemarthrosis were localized to the left stifle joint. Projections of synovial membrane with reddish-purple nodules, excised via arthrotomy, were composed histologically of variably sized vascular channels that were lined by well-differentiated endothelial cells and separated by fibrous septa.

A real-time RT-PCR assay was developed utilizing dual-labeled fluorescent probes binding to VP4 sequence that are specific to the classical (Cl), variant (V) and very virulent (vv) strains of infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV). The assay was highly sensitive and could detect as little as 3 x 10(2) to 3 x 10(3) copies of viral template. Viral genomic copy number could be accurately assayed over a broad range of 7-8 logs of viral genome.
