Rostral mandibular injuries present unique challenges for repair. The presence of strategically important teeth which occupy a large volume of the mandible, multiple tooth roots and the mental neurovascular bundle all combine to limit treatment options that serve to preserve the form and function of the involved structures. This case series describes the approach to treatment for rostral mandibular trauma seen in four dogs with a unique etiology that has not been previously described.

A 4-month-old, 31-kg intact male mixed-breed Bernese mountain dog was presented for evaluation of severe non-regenerative anemia after several days of lethargy, inappetence and pale mucous membranes. Bone marrow evaluation and complete response to immunosuppressive therapy were suggestive of primary pure red cell aplasia (PRCA). Primary PRCA is a rare immune-mediated non-regenerative anemia that is overrepresented in middle-aged to older spayed female dogs and has not previously been described in an intact male puppy.

Clinical staging is important for determining the extent of disease in animals with malignant cancers. The status of the lymph node will help determine whether adjuvant treatment is indicated. Historically, the regional anatomic lymph node has been sampled to determine the presence or absence of metastatic disease, but there is increasing evidence that the regional anatomic lymph node is often different to the sentinel lymph node.
