Fluid-infused (or swollen) elastomers are known for their antiadhesive properties. The presence of excess fluid at their surface is the main contributor to limiting contact formation and minimizing adhesion. Despite their potential, the mechanisms for adhesion and contact aging to fluid-infused elastomers are poorly understood beyond contact with a few materials (ice, biofilms, glass).

Interface Stabilization in Adhesion Caused by Elastohydrodynamic Deformation.

Phys Rev Lett

September 2023

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, University of California Berkeley, Berkeley, California 94720, USA.

Interfacial instabilities are common phenomena observed during adhesion measurements involving viscoelastic polymers or fluids. Typical probe-tack adhesion measurements with soft adhesives are conducted with rigid probes. However, in many settings, such as for medical applications, adhesives make and break contact from soft surfaces such as skin.

Biomimetic human skin model patterned with rete ridges.

Biofabrication

October 2023

John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA 02138, United States of America.

Rete ridges consist of undulations between the epidermis and dermis that enhance the mechanical properties and biological function of human skin. However, most human skin models are fabricated with a flat interface between the epidermal and dermal layers. Here, we report a micro-stamping method for producing human skin models patterned with rete ridges of controlled geometry.

Role of HO· Radical in the Degradation of Fuel Cell Proton-Exchange Membranes.

ACS Phys Chem Au

November 2022

3M Corporate Research Materials Laboratory, 3M Center, Saint Paul, Minnesota55144-1000, United States.

Membrane durability in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is one of the major obstacles limiting its applications, especially in heavy-duty vehicles. Membrane degradation reactions are thought to be attacks by radicals such as hydroxyl (HO) or hydrogen atom (H) generated during fuel cell operation. For the H case, computational modeling results have suggested that the reaction between H and the sulfonic group should be the dominant degradation pathway.

Different HIV vaccine regimens elicit distinct plasma antibody responses in both human and nonhuman primate models. Previous studies in human and non-human primate infants showed that adjuvants influenced the quality of plasma antibody responses induced by pediatric HIV envelope vaccine regimens. We recently reported that use of the 3M052-SE adjuvant and longer intervals between vaccinations are associated with higher magnitude of antibody responses in infant rhesus macaques.

CeO hybrid nanoparticles were synthesized and evaluated for use as radical scavengers, in place of commercially available Ce(NO) and CeO nanoparticles, to avoid deterioration of the initial electrochemical performance and/or spontaneous aggregation/precipitation issues encountered in polymer electrolyte membranes. When CeO hybrid nanoparticles were used for membrane formation, the resulting membranes exhibited improved proton conductivity (improvement level = 2-15% at 30-90 °C), and thereby electrochemical single cell performance, because the -OH groups on the hybrid nanoparticles acted as proton conductors. In spite of a small amount (i.

Abstract: Food manufacturers often use squeegees as a tool to remove condensation from overhead surfaces. This practice is done to reduce the likelihood of environmental pathogen contamination by eliminating condensed-water droplets that could fall from overhead surfaces during production. However, this practice may actually spread environmental pathogens across these surfaces, defeating its purpose and further increasing the risk for contamination in the processing area.
