Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine the incidence rate of primary shoulder dislocations and the surgical interventions required, examining data from a major trauma center over a seven-year period.
  • A total of 1,302 patients experienced primary shoulder dislocations, with an incidence density rate of 179 per 100,000 person-years; 8% of these patients required stabilization surgery, primarily among younger individuals.
  • The findings highlighted a bimodal age distribution for shoulder dislocations, with higher incidents in the 20-29 and over 60 age groups, while dislocations were more common in men under 59 and shifted to women in those over 60.

Rational And Objectives: Non-invasive cardiac output (CO) measurements are essential during the immediate post-operative course of young, congenital heart repaired patients. The use of the Ultrasonic Cardiac Output Monitor (USCOM) in pediatric intensive care units (PICU) is increasing. The literature on accuracy of USCOM in young, critically ill, mechanically ventilated, hemodynamically supported patients is scarce.

Article Synopsis
  • Socioeconomic status (SES) is linked to worse outcomes in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), with this study specifically investigating the effect of national health insurance on these outcomes.
  • A cohort of 617 SLE patients was analyzed, showing that those in the lower SES group had younger disease onset and higher rates of lupus nephritis compared to higher SES groups, which also had lower mortality and end-stage kidney disease rates.
  • The study concludes that low SES negatively impacts SLE outcomes, even in a healthcare system with equal access, highlighting the need for policymakers to address barriers faced by lower SES patients.
