Lignin holds significant potential as a feedstock for generating valuable aromatic compounds, fuels, and functional materials. However, achieving this potential requires the development of effective dissolution methods. Previous works have demonstrated the remarkable capability of hydrotropes to enhance the aqueous solubility of lignin, an amphiphilic macromolecule.

Microbiological Assessment of White Button Mushrooms with an Edible Film Coating.

Foods

August 2023

Association BLC3-Technology and Innovation Campus, Centre Bio R&D Unit, Rua Nossa Senhora da Conceição n2, 3405-155 Oliveira do Hospital, Portugal.

The development of edible coatings incorporating bioextracts from mushrooms native to Portuguese forests aims to enhance the value of the endogenous forest and mycological resources by harnessing their potential as a source of antimicrobial and antioxidant compounds. Edible coatings represent an important pathway to decreasing food waste and contributing to implementing a circular bioeconomy. The coating should result in product valorization through improved preservation/conservation, increased shelf life, as well as enhancement of its antioxidant and enzymatic properties.

The first ever nanofibers produced by the electrospinning of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and extracts are presented in this article. extracts were obtained by ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) using two different solvents: a glucose/glycerol-based natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) and water. Through spectrophotometry analysis, it was possible to determine the pigment yield of the extractions for both extracts: phycocyanin = 3.

3D Construction Printing Standing for Sustainability and Circularity: Material-Level Opportunities.

Materials (Basel)

March 2023

CONSTRUCT-Labest, Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, 4200-465 Porto, Portugal.

Three-dimensional Cementitious materials Printing (3DCP) is a cutting-edge technology for the construction industry. Three-dimensional printed buildings have shown that a well-developed automated technology can foster valuable benefits, such as a freeform architectural design without formworks and reduced human intervention. However, scalability, commercialization and sustainability of the 3DPC technology remain critical issues.

In this work, centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC) assisted by a polyethylene glycol (PEG)/sodium polyacrylate (NaPA) aqueous biphasic system (ABS) was applied in the separation of five lignin-derived monomers (vanillin, vanillic acid, syringaldehyde, acetovanillone, and -hydroxybenzaldehyde). The influence of the system pH (unbuffered, pH 5, and pH 12) and added electrolytes (inorganic salts or ionic liquids (ILs)) on the compound partition was initially evaluated. The obtained data revealed that ILs induced more adequate partition coefficients ( < 5) than inorganic salts ( > 5) to enable separation performance in CPC, while alkaline conditions (pH 12) demonstrated a positive impact on the partition of vanillic acid.

Solvent effects on the wood delignification with sustainable solvents.

Int J Biol Macromol

June 2022

CICECO, Aveiro Institute of Materials, Department of Chemistry, University of Aveiro, 3810-193 Aveiro, Portugal; CECOLAB, Collaborative Laboratory Towards Circular Economy, R. Nossa Senhora da Conceição, 3405-155 Oliveira do Hospital, Portugal.

Solutions of a pure organic solvent acidified with 1% sulfuric acid, and some of their aqueous mixtures were used for lignin extraction in the Pinus radiata sawdust delignification. Organic acid solvents including acetic, lactic and citric acids as well as non-acidic compounds such as γ-valerolactone, 2-methyltetrahydrofuran, glycerol and ethylene glycol were studied. Crude lignin extractions yields (%) ranging between ca.

April 2021

Universidade Católica Portuguesa, CBQF - Centro de Biotecnologia e Química Fina - Laboratório Associado, Escola Superior de Biotecnologia, Rua Diogo Botelho 1327, 4169-005 Porto, Portugal. Electronic address:

Pulp-enriched powder (POPP) was obtained from olive pomace solid fraction, a derived from the new value chain established for olive by-products. As a multifunctional powder, POPP retains several bioactive compounds (fatty acids, dietary fibre and phenolics) under potential synergic interaction, even more, reactive throughout the digestion. So, in this study, the potential multifunctionality of POPP was evaluated after the gastrointestinal tract.
