Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major public health concern worldwide, contributing to high rates of injury-related death and disability. Severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI), although it accounts for only 10% of all TBI cases, results in a mortality rate of 30-40% and a significant burden of disability in those that survive. This study explored the potential of metabolomics in the diagnosis of sTBI and explored the potential of metabolomics to examine probable primary and secondary brain injury in sTBI.

Aging is a major risk factor for sinoatrial node (SAN) dysfunction, which can impair heart rate (HR) control and heart rate variability (HRV). HR and HRV are determined by intrinsic SAN function and its regulation by the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The purpose of this study was to use multi-scale multi-fractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MSMFDFA; a complexity-based approach to analyze multi-fractal dynamics) to longitudinally assess changes in multi-fractal HRV properties and SAN function in ECG time series recorded repeatedly across the full adult lifespan in mice.

Interrupted blood flow in the brain due to ischemic injuries such as ischemic stroke or traumatic brain injury results in irreversible brain damage, leading to cognitive impairment associated with inflammation, disruption of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), and cell death. Since the BBB only allows entry to a small class of drugs, many drugs used to treat ischemia in other tissues have failed in brain-related disorders. The administration of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) has shown promise in improving the functional recovery of the brain following cerebral ischemia by inducing blood vessel formation.

Background: Following an ischemic injury to the brain, the induction of angiogenesis is critical to neurological recovery. The angiogenic benefits of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been attributed at least in part to the actions of extracellular vesicles (EVs) that they secrete. EVs are membrane-bound vesicles that contain various angiogenic biomolecules capable of eliciting therapeutic responses and are of relevance in cerebral applications due to their ability to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB).

Background: Prognostication is very important to clinicians and families during the early management of severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI), however, there are no gold standard biomarkers to determine prognosis in sTBI. As has been demonstrated in several diseases, early measurement of serum metabolomic profiles can be used as sensitive and specific biomarkers to predict outcomes.
Methods: We prospectively enrolled 59 adults with sTBI (Glasgow coma scale, GCS ≤ 8) in a multicenter Canadian TBI (CanTBI) study.

Natriuretic peptides, including C-type NP (CNP), have been shown to modulate ion channel function in the SAN when applied exogenously. Heart rate (HR) and sinoatrial node (SAN) function are modulated by the autonomic nervous system. HR regulation by the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) is impaired in diabetes mellitus (DM), which is denoted cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy. Whether blunted PNS effects on HR in type 2 DM are related to impaired responsiveness of the SAN to PNS agonists is unknown.

Introduction: Pneumonia is the most common cause of mortality from infectious diseases, the second leading cause of nosocomial infection, and the leading cause of mortality among hospitalized adults. To improve clinical management, metabolomics has been increasingly applied to find specific metabolic biopatterns (profiling) for the diagnosis and prognosis of various infectious diseases, including pneumonia.
Methods: One hundred fifty bacterial community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) patients whose plasma samples were drawn within the first 24 h of hospital admission were enrolled in this study and separated into two age- and sex-matched cohorts: non-survivors (died ≤ 90 days) and survivors (survived > 90 days).

Household food insecurity (HFI), lack of access to adequate food due to financial constraint, has been studied extensively in Canada and is well-recognized for its negative impacts on population health. Despite considerable high-level political recognition, the issue has evoked little substantive policy deliberation. We suggest that Béland and Cox's recently articulated construct of 'valence' may be useful in examining why the idea of HFI has motivated little policy response.

Inflammation is an integral component of many diseases, including chronic kidney disease (CKD). ASC (apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing CARD, also PYCARD) is the key inflammasome adaptor protein in the innate immune response. Since ASC specks, a macromolecular condensate of ASC protein, can be released by inflammasome-activated cells into the extracellular space to amplify inflammatory responses, the ASC protein could be an important biomarker in diagnostic applications.

Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) have an important role during infection by helping neutrophils to capture and kill pathogens. However, evidence is accumulating that uncontrolled or excessive production of NETs is related to the exacerbation of inflammation and the development of autoimmunity, cancer metastasis and inappropriate thrombosis. In this Review, we focus on the role of NETs in the liver and gastrointestinal system, outlining their protective and pathological effects.

Although the role of neutrophils during bacterial or fungal infections is well understood, their impact on antiviral immunity is much less studied. Furthermore, neutrophil function in tumor pathogenesis and cancer treatment has recently received much attention, particularly within the context of oncolytic virus infection where neutrophils produce antitumor cytokines and enhance oncolysis.
