Res Child Adolesc Psychopathol

January 2023

Department of Psychiatry, The Hospital for Sick Children, Neurosciences and Mental Health, 555 University Avenue, Toronto, ON, M5G 1X8, Canada.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated neurocognitive performance differences in ADHD and ASD through comparisons of clinically and community-ascertained samples, revealing that both disorders exhibit impairments in response inhibition and sustained attention.
  • - When comparing clinical cases, ADHD and ASD showed longer stop-signal reaction times and reaction time variability than controls, but did not significantly differ from each other.
  • - Findings indicated that ADHD traits largely explained the neurocognitive impairments observed in individuals with ASD, suggesting that ADHD may account for the cognitive challenges faced by those with comorbid conditions, with results consistent across both clinical and community samples.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to show that using the K114 fluorophore can effectively detect and differentiate between AL and AA types of renal amyloidosis compared to traditional methods.
  • Kidney biopsies from patients with different types of amyloidosis were stained and imaged, showing that K114 could clearly distinguish between normal tissue and both types of amyloid, while Congo Red had limitations and a higher chance of false positives.
  • The results indicate that K114 staining has potential for clinical use in diagnosing renal amyloidosis due to its superior specificity and ability to quantify differences between amyloid types.

Sci Data

May 2022

Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute, University of Calgary, 28 Oki Dr NW, Calgary, AB, T3B 6A8, Canada.

Complex morphological traits are the product of many genes with transient or lasting developmental effects that interact in anatomical context. Mouse models are a key resource for disentangling such effects, because they offer myriad tools for manipulating the genome in a controlled environment. Unfortunately, phenotypic data are often obtained using laboratory-specific protocols, resulting in self-contained datasets that are difficult to relate to one another for larger scale analyses.

Background: Inappropriate and wasteful use of health care resources is a common problem, constituting 10-34% of health services spending in the western world. Even though diagnostic imaging is vital for identifying correct diagnoses and administrating the right treatment, low-value imaging-in which the diagnostic test confers little to no clinical benefit-is common and contributes to inappropriate and wasteful use of health care resources. There is a lack of knowledge on the types and extent of low-value imaging.
