Purpose: To understand the epidemiology and healthcare use of critically ill patients experiencing homelessness compared to critically ill patients with stable housing.
Methods: This retrospective population-based cohort study included adults admitted to any ICU in Alberta, Canada, for a 3-year period. Administrative and clinical data from the hospital, ICU and emergency department were used to examine healthcare resource use (processes of care, ICU and hospital length of stay, hospital readmission and emergency room visits).

The tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis is an emerging pathogen of significance to human and animal health in Canada, yet little is known about key rodent intermediate hosts in local urban ecosystems. In Europe, invasive muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) are an important indicator intermediate host species; however, the role of this semiaquatic rodent in the ecology of E. multilocularis is undetermined in the North American context.

Background: Canada has high immunoglobulin (IG) product utilization, raising concerns about appropriate utilization, cost and risk of shortages. Currently, there is no national set of standardized IG guidelines, and considerable variations exist among the existing provincial guidelines. The aims of this study were: (1) to compare the existing Canadian provincial guidelines on the use of IG products to identify their consistencies and differences and (2) to examine the existing research in Canada on IG supply and utilization following the establishment of IG guidelines to understand the scope of research and pinpoint the gaps.

Objective: Direct magnetic resonance arthrography (dMRA) is often considered the most accurate imaging modality for the evaluation of intra-articular structures, but utilization and performance vary widely without consensus. The purpose of this white paper is to develop consensus recommendations on behalf of the Society of Skeletal Radiology (SSR) based on published literature and expert opinion.
Materials And Methods: The Standards and Guidelines Committee of the SSR identified guidelines for utilization and performance of dMRA as an important topic for study and invited all SSR members with expertise and interest to volunteer for the white paper panel.

We aimed to develop and validate the Unesp-Botucatu goat acute pain scale (UGAPS). Thirty goats (5 negative controls and 25 submitted to orchiectomy) were filmed for 7 min at the time points 24 h before and 2 h, 3 h (1 h after analgesia), and 24 h after orchiectomy. After content validation, according to an ethogram and literature, four blind observers analyzed the videos randomly to score the UGAPS, repeating the same assessment in 30 days.

Background: While simple Audit & Feedback (A&F) has shown modest effectiveness in reducing low-value care, there is a knowledge gap on the effectiveness of multifaceted interventions to support de-implementation efforts. Given the need to make rapid decisions in a context of multiple diagnostic and therapeutic options, trauma is a high-risk setting for low-value care. Furthermore, trauma systems are a favorable setting for de-implementation interventions as they have quality improvement teams with medical leadership, routinely collected clinical data, and performance-linked to accreditation.

Females are up to four times more likely to sustain a stress fracture than males. Our previous work, using statistical appearance modeling in combination with the finite element method, suggested that sex-related differences in tibial geometry may increase bone strain in females. The purpose of this study was to cross-validate these findings, by quantifying sex-related differences in tibia-fibula bone geometry, density, and finite element-predicted bone strain in a new cohort of young physically active adults.

Regenerative therapies for the treatment of peripheral nerve and spinal cord injuries can require hundreds of millions of autologous cells. Current treatments involve the harvest of Schwann cells (SCs) from nerves; however, this is an invasive procedure. Therefore, a promising alternative is using skin-derived Schwann cells (Sk-SCs), in which between 3-5 million cells can be harvested from a standard skin biopsy.

With further knowledge of the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease, small oral molecules have become available, including the Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors. Upadacitinib (UPA) is a selective JAK1 inhibitor and has become the newest drug in this class, with recent approval for the management of moderate-to-severe ulcerative colitis. The large phase III program (including the U-ACHIEVE and U-ACCOMPLISH parallel induction trials and the U-ACHIEVE Maintenance trial) demonstrated superiority over placebo, for all primary and secondary endpoints including key clinical, endoscopic, and histological outcomes utilizing 45 mg orally (po) once daily (OD) during induction and either 30 mg or 15 mg po OD in maintenance.

Purpose: This study evaluated a professionally-led, group-based vulvo-vaginal and sexual health (VSH) workshop for women diagnosed with cancer. The study goals were to: (1) implement and assess a novel group intervention for diverse VSH concerns; (2) explore post-workshop changes in symptom bother, motivation to use VSH treatments, and frequency of VSH treatment use; (3) examine post-workshop changes in sexual well-being.
Methods: A group-based educational workshop to address a variety of VSH concerns was developed and implemented.

Ruminants establish a symbiotic relationship with their microbiome, and the latter is the workhorse of carbohydrate fermentation. On the other hand, during carbohydrate fermentation, synthesis of propionate sequesters H, thus reducing its availability for the ultimate production of methane (CH4) by methanogenic archaea.

Introduction: Brain atrophy in Parkinson's disease occurs to varying degrees in different brain regions, even at the early stage of the disease. While cortical morphological features are often considered independently in structural brain imaging studies, research on the co-progression of different cortical morphological measurements could provide new insights regarding the progression of PD. Workplace-based learning provides medical students exposure to interprofessional competencies through repeated exposures and active participation in interprofessional learning activities. Using Situated Learning Theory as our theoretical lens, we explored with medical students how interacting with existing interprofessional teams contributes to development of an expanded health care professional identity. An embedded mixed methods study using semi-structured interviews and questionnaires to assess readiness for interprofessional learning was conducted with 14 medical students completing an elective at an interprofessional pain medicine clinic.

Available methods for recognizing and assessing pain in rodents have increased over the last 10 years, including the development of validated pain assessment scales. Much of this work has been driven by the needs of biomedical research, and there are specific challenges to applying these scales in the clinical environment. This article provides an introduction to pain assessment scale validation, reviews current methods of pain assessment, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses, and makes recommendations for assessing pain in a clinical environment.
