The association between gender identity fluidity and health outcomes in transgender and gender diverse people in New Orleans and Los Angeles, USA.

Objectives: Most studies with transgender and gender diverse people (TGD) examine gender identity cross-sectionally. Gender identity and expression can fluctuate over time, which may have implications for health. The goal of our study was to compare mental health, substance use and healthcare utilization among 163 gender identity fluid (1 + identity change) and gender identity consistent (no change) TGD.

Syndesmotic screws, unscrew them, or leave them? A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Background: Syndesmotic injuries are frequently stabilized using syndesmotic screws. Traditionally, these screws were routinely removed during the postoperative period, however recent literature has brought into question the necessity of routine removal, citing no change in functional outcomes and the inherent risks of a second surgery. Our study aimed to compare outcomes of patients undergoing routine syndesmotic screw removal versus those undergoing an on-demand approach to removal.

Comparison of rerupture rates after operative and nonoperative management of Achilles tendon rupture in older populations: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the treatment for Achilles tendon rupture (ATR) associated with the lowest risk of rerupture in older patients.

Methods: Five databases were searched through September 2022 for studies published in the past 10 years analyzing operative and nonoperative ATR treatment. Studies were categorized as "nonelderly" if they reported only on patients aged 18-60 years.

Use trends of chlorthalidone and hydrochlorothiazide among United States adults with hypertension: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2009-2018.

Objectives: To estimate the national prevalence of chlorthalidone and hydrochlorothiazide use among adults diagnosed with hypertension by sociodemographic subgroup, healthcare access status, and clinical factors.

Methods: Data was extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for 2009-2010 through 2017-2018 survey waves. Patients at least 20 years old, diagnosed with hypertension, and on hydrochlorothiazide or chlorthalidone were included.

Co-occurrence of glioma and multiple sclerosis: Prevailing theories and emerging therapies.

Though the concurrence of primary brain tumors and multiple sclerosis (MS) is exceedingly rare, instances have been noted in the literature as early as 1949. Given these observations, researchers have proposed various ideas as to how these malignancies may be linked to MS. Due to insufficient data, none have gained traction or been widely accepted amongst neurologists or neuro-oncologists.

Development of a combination didactic-experiential elective course within a college-based pharmacy call center.

Background: Pharmacy graduates should be prepared to provide patient care in a variety of healthcare settings as members of an interprofessional collaborative team. College-based pharmacy call centers can serve as settings to promote interprofessional practice through didactic and experiential coursework. An elective course, Team-Based Medication Management Practices, was developed to provide student pharmacists the opportunity to learn about pharmacy-led services within value-based care models and to prepare them for interprofessional care by incorporating experiential activities within a college-based call center.

Expression and subcellular localization of Discoidin Domain Receptor 1 (DDR1) define prostate cancer aggressiveness.

Background: The Discoidin Domain Receptor 1 (DDR1) is one of the two members of a unique family of receptor tyrosine kinase receptors that signal in response to collagen, which has been implicated in cancer progression. Here, we examined the expression of DDR1 in prostate cancer (PCa), and assessed its potential value as a prognostic marker, as a function of grade, stage and other clinicopathologic parameters.

Methods: We investigated the association between the expression level and subcellular localization of DDR1 protein and PCa aggressiveness by immunohistochemistry, using tissue microarrays (TMAs) encompassing 200 cases of PCa with various Gleason scores (GS) and pathologic stages with matched normal tissue, and a highly specific monoclonal antibody.

Background: Current arbovirus preventive health interventions do not take social and personality variables into account. Social cognition models posit that people engage in preventive health behaviour (PHB) after an assessment of the perceived risk of disease, an analysis of potential consequences and an evaluation of self-efficacy.

Point-of-care ultrasound assessment of the abdominal aorta by physician assistant students: a pilot study.

Objective: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) decreases time to diagnosis and improves mortality of those diagnosed with abdominal aortic aneurysms and dissections. While medical students have demonstrated an ability to obtain adequate POCUS images of the abdominal aorta (AA), physician assistant (PA) student studies are lacking. This pilot study aims to evaluate the ability of PA students to acquire AA POCUS images.

The role of self-efficacy, flexibility, and gender in pharmacy students' health information technology readiness.

Introduction: Pharmacy students' characteristics and attitudes towards health information technology (HIT) may influence their willingness to learn, adopt, and utilize technology in healthcare settings. Future pharmacists will play a key role in the successful implementation of HIT, yet their technology readiness is not well understood. The goal of this study was to understand pharmacy students' attitudes regarding HIT and identify personal characteristics and psychosocial factors that predict their readiness to use HIT in future clinical practice.

Prolonged exposure of rats to varenicline increases anxiety and alters serotonergic system, but has no effect on memory.

Varenicline is a drug used for smoking addiction cessation treatment and acts as a partial agonist of nicotinic cholinergic receptors. Recent clinical trial data support use of varenicline for treatment of conditions/addictions that are not related to smoking cessation. Considering the importance of this issue and the need for new studies on its effects, especially on behavior, more studies using animal models are necessary.

Nucleotide excision repair is a predictor of early relapse in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Background: Nucleotide Excision Repair (NER) is a major pathway of mammalian DNA repair that is associated with drug resistance and has not been well characterized in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The objective of this study was to explore the role of NER in relapsed ALL patients. We hypothesized that increased expression of NER genes was associated with drug resistance and relapse in ALL.

Oral health promotion practices: a survey of Florida child care center directors.

Background: To understand the oral health promotion practices (OHPPs) in Florida licensed childcare centers (CCCs), we surveyed the childcare center directors (CCCDs) employed at these centers. We determined if CCC's affiliation with Early Head Start/Head Start (EHS/HS) programs was associated with the number of OHPPs implemented.

Methods: For this cross-sectional study we emailed a pretested 45-item online survey to unduplicated email addresses of 5142 licensed CCCDs as listed in the publicly available Florida Department of Child and Family services database.

The presence of a brain renin angiotensin system (RAS) is well documented. An overactive brain RAS contributes to the development and progression of cardiovascular and renal disorders among other conditions. In hypertension, an augmented brain RAS leads to an increase in sympathetic nervous system activity.

Optimizing insulin delivery for patients with diabetes.

Management of diabetes for residents in long-term care settings is particularly challenging, due to the wide range of physical and mental limitations that bear on efficacy of their medications, as well as practical issues associated with the optimal administration of these medications. Foremost among the practical issues for residents requiring insulin injections, is the need to ensure that it is consistently delivered to the circulation at the target rate and dosage, thereby avoiding life-threatening episodes of hypoglycemia. Recent evidence from a multinational survey has elucidated principles of insulin injection technique, including optimal needle length and site rotation that can greatly improve consistency in delivering insulin to the subcutaneous compartment, while reducing pain, improving patient compliance, and limiting the total daily dosage.

Exercise Perception and Behaviors in Individuals Living with Primary Immunodeficiency Disease.

Background: Routine exercise has been established as an effective way to improve overall health. The value of exercise has been established in many diseases, however, there are no studies investigating the impact of exercise for individuals with primary immunodeficiency disease (PID). The purpose of this study was to investigate exercise perceptions and behaviors in individuals diagnosed with PID.

Longevity of visual improvements following transcorneal electrical stimulation and efficacy of retreatment in three individuals with retinitis pigmentosa.

Purpose: A small-scale randomized controlled trial conducted by our group found that four of seven retinitis pigmentosa (RP) subjects who received six weekly Transcorneal Electrical Stimulation (TES) sessions developed significant improvements in visual acuity (VA), quick contrast sensitivity function (qCSF), and/or Goldmann visual fields (GVF). We longitudinally monitored three of these participants for declining visual function due to natural RP progression to determine the duration of their responses and administered retreatments.

Methods: Over a period of 29-35 months, repeated ETDRS VA, qCSF and/or GVF tests and three to six TES treatment courses consisting of six weekly sessions were administered in each eye of three RP participants every four to 16 months in an unmasked, prospective case series study.

Patient perspectives on peripheral neuropathic pain experience within the community.

Purpose of this cross-sectional study was to explore the relationship between neuropathic physical complaints (NPC) and quality-of-life (QoL) in community-dwelling patients with diabetes in Broward County, Florida. Adult patients were invited to complete a 10-minute paper questionnaire at a community hospital between October 2014-April 2016. Analysis of data from 124 participants (60 with distal symmetric polyneuropathy (DSPN) diagnosis versus 64 without DSPN diagnosis) with NPC, showed those with DSPN had a longer duration of diabetes, suffered a higher number of NPC, and had a lower QoL (all p≤0.

Healthcare Disparities in Hispanic Diabetes Care: A Propensity Score-Matched Study.

Hispanics represent the largest minority group in the US. Research has shown that the ethnic minority especially Hispanics have a disproportionate burden of illness associated with diabetes mellitus. However, many have been focused on small sample sizes with potential selection bias.

Methods: For this cross-sectional study, a pretested 45-item online survey was sent to 5142 CCCDs assessing pediatric oral health knowledge, attitudes towards oral health, intention to implement OHPPs, and self-perceived barriers to implementing OHPPs. An adjusted logistic regression model determined the factors associated with CCCDs intention to implement OHPPs within the next year.
