Trypanosoma cruzi RNA-binding protein DRBD3: perinuclear foci formation during benznidazole exposure.

An Acad Bras Cienc

November 2024

Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Instituto de Ciências Biológicas, Departamento de Bioquímica e Imunologia, Avenida Antônio Carlos, 6627, 31270-901 Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil.

Benznidazole (BZ) is the trypanocidal compound of choice for Chagas disease, a neglected tropical disease in the Americas. However, this drug often fails to cure the infection. The regulation of gene expression in Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, is based on post-transcriptional mechanisms.

Leader cells promote immunosuppression to drive ovarian cancer progression in vivo.

Cell Rep

November 2024

Hudson Institute of Medical Research, Clayton, VIC, Australia; Department of Molecular and Translational Sciences, Monash University, Clayton, VIC, Australia. Electronic address:

Over 75% of patients with ovarian cancer present with late-stage disease, often accompanied by extensive metastasis. The metastatic cascade is driven by a sub-population of transcriptionally plastic cells known as "leader cells" (LCs), which play a critical role in collective invasion yet remain poorly understood. LCs are marked by the expression of keratin-14 (KRT14), which determines their migratory and invasive capacity in ovarian cancer.

Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) is a commonly diagnosed cancer. Genome-wide association studies have implicated Iroquois homeobox 4 (IRX4) in PCa susceptibility, yet its functional roles remain unclear. We discovered a 78-amino acid micropeptide (miPEP, IRX4_PEP1), encoded from the alternative start site within the IRX4 gene.

Person-centred leadership is an approach to leadership that supports a way of being that is authentic, prioritising values lived out in action. However, there is an increasing recognition that leadership development has not been impactful in relation to workplace culture.

Introduction: The Activating Lived Experience Leadership (ALEL) project was a South Australian participatory action research project that aimed to improve the ways lived experience is recognised, valued and integrated across mental health and social sector systems. ALEL was completed during 2019-2021, where it engaged 182 participants in generating community action and research knowledge.

Objective: Our paper discusses the project's processes of building a collective partnership among lived experience leaders and other leaders from within the sector, so that the actions and strategies identified through research could be implemented by systems-level impact.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of the Khorana, PROTECHT, CONKO, and COMPASS-CAT scores in identifying risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE) in lung cancer patients.
  • A total of 591 patients were analyzed, with 108 experiencing VTE; results showed that the CONKO score had better discriminatory ability than the Khorana score over both 6 and 12 months.
  • The findings highlight a decrease in the Khorana score's effectiveness over time and suggest the need for further research to validate the CONKO score and the identified risk factors.

Mating systems, influenced by the social and ecological environment and individual attributes, are fundamental components of animal social organisation, impacting behaviour, animal distribution, ecosystem processes, individual reproductive success, and population dynamics. Bats are of particular interest for studies of mating systems as they are thought to exhibit a greater diversity in mating systems than any other mammalian order, and thus make great models for improving our fundamental understanding of causes and consequences of social organisation. Here, we review the current knowledge of bat mating systems.

Pre-surgical clinical assessment of an adnexal mass typically relies on transvaginal ultrasound for comprehensive morphological assessment, with further support provided by biomarker measurements and clinical evaluation. Whilst effective for masses that are obviously benign or malignant, a large proportion of masses remain sonographically indeterminate at surgical referral. As a consequence, post-surgical diagnoses of benign disease can outnumber malignancies up to 9-fold, while less than 50% of cancer cases receive a primary referral to a gynecological oncology specialist.
