Protective Effect of Electroacupuncture at Zusanli on Myocardial Injury in Septic Rats.

The protective effect of electroacupuncture (EA) at Zusanli points (ST36) on myocardial injury in a model of sepsis was observed. Forty-eight male Sprague-Daley rats were subjected to sepsis by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) and randomly divided into 4 groups (n=12; A: sepsis + EA; B: sepsis + sham acupuncture; C: sepsis + vagotomy; D: sepsis + vagotomy + EA). Bilateral points were stimulated (2mA, 2-100 Hz) for 1 hour.

A functional polymorphism rs2257440 in the gene regulates its expression via MTF-1 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Purpose: The single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs2257440 in exon 1 of the gene is known to be significantly associated with susceptibility to esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). In the present study, bioinformatics analysis indicated that the SNP might influence the binding of a transcription factor, metal regulatory transcription factor 1 (MTF-1), to its target gene. We further investigated whether the polymorphism rs2257440 could regulate expression as a functional SNP via MTF-1.

The PI3K/AKT cell signaling pathway is involved in regulation of osteoporosis.

Background: Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease with the high incidence, serious complications, financial burden, and heavily decrease in living quality.

Methods: Proliferation of osteoblast was tested by 2,3-bis-(2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium-5-carboxanilide (XTT) method, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity of osteoblasts was tested by ALP REAGENT, Calcium level was determined by a colorimetric assay, mRNA expression of phosphoinositide-3 kinase (PI3K), 3-phosphoinositide-dependent protein kinase 1 (PDK1), Akt, Caspase-3, Caspase-7, Caspase-9, osteocalcin (OCN), Osterix and Runx2 of osteoblasts was tested by RNA preparation and quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and protein expression of phospho-PI3K, phospho-PDK1 and phospho-Akt was measured by Western Blot analysis.

Results: In osteoporosis model rats, it found that mRNA expression of PI3K, PDK1 and Akt showed no changes while protein expression of phospho-PI3K, phospho-PDK1 and phospho-Akt in bone tissue was decreased dramatically.

RPS24 knockdown inhibits colorectal cancer cell migration and proliferation in vitro.

Besides new proteins synthesis, ribosomal protein has a role in extra-ribosomal functions, which are related to many diseases, such as Diamond-Blackfan anemia, hypoplasia, and cell apoptosis. However, the importance of RPS24 in human colon cancer is largely unknown. In this study, RPS24 gene expression was significantly inhibited in human colon cancer HCT116 and HT-29 cells using a lentivirus shRNA approach.

An immunohistochemical study of thioredoxin domain-containing 5 expression in gastric adenocarcinoma.

Thioredoxin domain-containing 5 (TXNDC5) is overexpressed in a number of human carcinomas. However, the involvement of TXNDC5 in gastric adenocarcinoma remains unclear. In the present study, the immunohistochemical expression and clinicopathological significance of TXNDC5 in gastric adenocarcinoma was investigated.

Hepatic epithelioid angiomyolipoma with an unusual pathologic appearance: expanding the morphologic spectrum.

Hepatic epithelioid angiomyolipoma (AML) is a rare lesion that is characteristically composed of a predominant or exclusive population of epithelioid cells coexpressing melanocytic and myogenic markers. The cystic variant of epithelioid AML is exceedingly uncommon. In this study, we present the clinicopathological features of a case of hepatic epithelioid AML with remarkable cystic degeneration in a 34-year-old female as well as with a literature review.

Sorafenib combined with TACE in advanced primary hepatocellular carcinoma.

Background/aims: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of sorafenib combined with transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) in patients with advanced primary hepatocellular carcinoma.

Methodology: A retrospective analysis of 65 patients with advanced primary hepatocellular carcinoma who had been administered sorafenib for more than one month and treated by TACE was performed. The tumor response was evaluated according to the response evaluation criteria in solid tumors and any side effects were recorded.

Comparative proteomics analysis of chronic atrophic gastritis: changes of protein expression in chronic atrophic gastritis without Helicobacter pylori infection.

Chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) is a very common gastritis and one of the major precursor lesions of gastric cancer, one of the most common cancers worldwide. The molecular mechanism underlying CAG is unclear, but its elucidation is essential for the prevention and early detection of gastric cancer and appropriate intervention. A combination of two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry was used in the present study to analyze the differentially expressed proteins.

Primary study of the use of an internal, self-activated shape memory alloy distraction device in the dog mandible: alveolar ridge distraction and implant placement.

Purpose: To investigate the use of an internal self-activated distraction device made of titanium-nickel memory alloy to augment the mandibular alveolar ridge.
