Anterior cervical decompression and fusion surgery for cervicogenic headache: A multicenter prospective cohort study.

Background: Cervicogenic headache (CEH) has long been recognized as a referred pain deriving from pathological changes in the upper cervical nerves. However, previous clinical studies found that anterior lower cervical discectomy for the treatment of cervical myelopathy and/or radiculopathy can also help relieve associated headaches. To date, there is still a lack of large sample and prospective study to investigate the effect of anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF) on CEH associated with cervical spondylosis.

Objective: Cervical spondylosis is often accompanied by tinnitus. Up to now, there is a lack of large samples and prospective studies to investigate the effect of anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF) on tinnitus associate with cervical spondylosis. To this end, we performed a prospective cohort study to assess the effectiveness of ACDF on the relief of tinnitus.

Cervical Intervertebral Disc Degeneration Contributes to Dizziness: A Clinical and Immunohistochemical Study.

Objectives: Dizziness often happens in patients with chronic neck pain with only cervical disc degeneration but without cervical radiculopathy or myelopathy. We prospectively selected a series of patients who showed cervical disc degeneration with concomitant chronic neck pain and intractable dizziness who did not respond to conservative treatment to test a new diagnostic method for this dizziness, to analyze the results of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) surgery based on the test, and to explore its pathogenesis.

Methods: Seventy-seven patients who had a transient neck pain and dizziness relief after injection of bupivacaine into a suspected disc were included in the study.

Subthreshold depression among diabetes patients in Beijing: Cross-sectional associations among sociodemographic, clinical, and behavior factors.

Background: This study explores the prevalence of subthreshold depression (SubD) and its association with factors in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients.

Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 808 outpatients with T2DM from ten hospitals in Beijing between September 2015 and January 2016. All participants completed the Patient Health Questionnaire 9-item (PHQ-9) to evaluate depressive status, with scores between 5 and 14 considered SubD.

The effectiveness of anterior cervical decompression and fusion for the relief of dizziness in patients with cervical spondylosis: a multicentre prospective cohort study.

Aims: Cervical spondylosis is often accompanied by dizziness. It has recently been shown that the ingrowth of Ruffini corpuscles into diseased cervical discs may be related to cervicogenic dizziness. In order to evaluate whether cervicogenic dizziness stems from the diseased cervical disc, we performed a prospective cohort study to assess the effectiveness of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion on the relief of dizziness.

Prediction of early recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma within the Milan criteria after radical resection.

Approximately 50% hepatocellular carcinoma patients meeting the Milan criteria utilized to develop an improved prognostic model for predicting the recurrence in these patients. Cervical Decompression Surgery for Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy and Concomitant Hypertension: A Multicenter Prospective Cohort Study.

Study Design: We performed decompression surgery or conservative treatments on 135 cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) patients with concomitant hypertension and did follow-up assessments up to 1 year to examine the change of blood pressure, spinal cord function, and cervical pain.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine whether concomitant hypertension is relieved after decompression surgery, and whether it is related to the improvement of spinal cord function or cervical pain.

Summary Of Background Data: In clinical practice, we often found that some patients with CSM have concomitant hypertension.

Mechanoreceptors in Diseased Cervical Intervertebral Disc and Vertigo.

Study Design: We collected the samples of cervical intervertebral discs from patients with vertigo to examine the distribution and types of mechanoreceptors in diseased cervical disc.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine whether mechanoreceptors are distributed more abundantly in cervical discs from patients with cervical spondylosis, and whether they are related to vertigo.

Summary Of Background Data: Previous limited studies have found that normal cervical intervertebral discs are supplied with mechanoreceptors that have been considered responsible for proprioceptive functions.

The gap between orthopaedic basic research and clinical research has been reduced with the development of modern research technology and the well-accepted concept of translational medicine. The personnel involved in orthopaedic research realise more clearly than ever that basic research should be patient centred and clinical-application oriented. The mainstream of orthopaedic research has been gradually changing from bench-to-bedside to bedside-to-bench-to-bedside.

A Comparison of Biocompatibility of a Titanium Alloy Fabricated by Electron Beam Melting and Selective Laser Melting.

Electron beam melting (EBM) and selective laser melting (SLM) are two advanced rapid prototyping manufacturing technologies capable of fabricating complex structures and geometric shapes from metallic materials using computer tomography (CT) and Computer-aided Design (CAD) data. Compared to traditional technologies used for metallic products, EBM and SLM alter the mechanical, physical and chemical properties, which are closely related to the biocompatibility of metallic products. In this study, we evaluate and compare the biocompatibility, including cytocompatibility, haemocompatibility, skin irritation and skin sensitivity of Ti6Al4V fabricated by EBM and SLM.

Apoptosis and death receptor signaling in diaphragm of burnt rats.

Background: Respiratory dysfunction is a frequent complication after severe burn injury. Respiratory muscle atrophy may induce respiratory dysfunction due to insufficient inspiratory motive power. Accumulated evidence suggests that apoptosis is very important in skeletal muscle atrophy in multiple pathologic conditions.

CK19 and Glypican 3 Expression Profiling in the Prognostic Indication for Patients with HCC after Surgical Resection.

This retrospective study was designed to investigate the correlation between a novel immunosubtyping method for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and biological behavior of tumor cells. A series of 346 patients, who received hepatectomy at two surgical centers from January 2007 to October 2010, were enrolled in this study. The expressions of cytokeratin 19 (CK19), glypican 3 (GPC3), and CD34 were detected by immunohistochemical staining.

Role of Keratinocyte Growth Factor in the Differentiation of Sweat Gland-Like Cells From Human Umbilical Cord-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells.

Effects of transforming growth factor β-1 infected human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells on high- and low-metastatic potential hepatocellular carcinoma.

Background: This study investigates the effects of human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell (hMSC) on migration and proliferation ability of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with high- and low-metastatic potential.

Arthroscopic combined medial and lateral meniscus transplantation after double-tunnel, double-bundle anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in the same knee.

Meniscus transplantation in combination with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction has been used in the treatment of patients with meniscus and ACL deficiency. However, there have been no reports of arthroscopic surgery and the outcome of both medial and lateral meniscus allograft transplantation after double-tunnel, double-bundle ACL reconstruction. Herein, we report the case of a young male who received arthroscopic lateral and medial meniscectomy and ACL tibialis allograft reconstruction performed with the double-tunnel and double-bundle technique approximately 8 months after a knee injury.

A randomized placebo-controlled trial of intradiscal methylene blue injection for the treatment of chronic discogenic low back pain.

A preliminary report of clinical study revealed that chronic discogenic low back pain could be treated by intradiscal methylene blue (MB) injection. We investigated the effect of intradiscal MB injection for the treatment of chronic discogenic low back pain in a randomized placebo-controlled trial. We recruited 136 patients who were found potentially eligible after clinical examination and 72 became eligible after discography.

The effects and mechanisms of insulin on systemic inflammatory response and immune cells in severe trauma, burn injury, and sepsis.

Insulin resistance, hyperglycemia, inflammatory disorders and immune dysfunction cause high morbidity and mortality in patients with severe trauma, burn injuries, or sepsis. Many studies have shown that intensive insulin therapy can combat insulin resistance, decrease blood glucose levels, and induce anabolic processes, thus, decreasing morbidity and mortality. Moreover, in recent years, it has been proven that insulin can attenuate systemic inflammatory responses and modulate the proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation and immune functions of certain immune cells, especially monocytes/macrophages, neutrophils, and T cells associated with severe trauma, burn injury, or sepsis.

Inhibition of Janus kinase 2 and signal transduction and activator of transcription 3 protect against cecal ligation and puncture-induced multiple organ damage and mortality.

Background: Janus kinase/signal transducers and activators of transcription (JAK/STAT) pathway plays an important role in sepsis, transducing a multitude of inflammatory signals. To date, knowledge of JAK/STAT pathway in sepsis is limited. This study was to investigate the potential role of JAK/STAT pathway in mediating multiple organ damage and mortality in septic rats.

Effect of burn injury on apoptosis and expression of apoptosis-related genes/proteins in skeletal muscles of rats.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the occurrence and possible mechanisms of apoptosis in skeletal muscles after burn injury. After a 40% body surface area burn to rats, TA muscles were examined for apoptosis at varying times by TEM, TUNEL and cell death ELISA assay. Thermal injury was found to induce apoptosis in skeletal muscle on the first day and maximal apoptosis appeared 4 days post-injury.

Effect of the L2 ramus communicans on the nociceptive pathway in lumbar intervertebral discs in rats.

The mechanism underlying discogenic low-back pain is unclear. It is difficult to explain this type of pain by the segmental innervation theory because the groin area is innervated by the genitofemoral or ilioinguinal nerves, which are the terminal branches of the L1 or L2 spinal nerves. Recently, some studies have indicated that sympathetic trunks are closely related to discogenic low-back pain.

An investigation of psychological profiles and risk factors in congenital microtia patients.

Objectives: Among congenital deformities, microtia is often said to be one of the most difficult for the reconstructive surgeon. However, few reports have investigated patients' and their families' psychological profiles. This study sought to determine the prevalence of mood disorders among patients with microtia and to explore clinical features associated with mood disorders.

Preparation of laser micropore porcine acellular dermal matrix for skin graft: an experimental study.

Unlabelled: In our previous study, we used composite grafts consisting of meshed porcine acellular dermal matrix (PADM) and thin split-thickness autologous epidermis to cover full thickness burn wounds in clinical practice. However, a certain degree of contraction might occur because the distribution of dermal matrix was not uniform in burn wound. In this study, we prepare a composite skin graft consisting of PADM with the aid of laser to improve the quality of healing of burn wound.
