Ethnopharmacological Relevance: San-Cao Granule (SCG) has been used in patients with liver fibrosis for many years and has shown good effect. However, its mechanism of therapeutic action is not clear because of its complex chemical system. The purpose of our study is to establish a comprehensive and systemic method that can predict the mechanism of action of SCG in antihepatic fibrosis.

The traditional Chinese medicines Lonicerae Japonicae Flos (LJF, Jinyinhua in Chinese) and Lonicerae Flos (LF, Shanyinhua in Chinese) refer to the flower buds of five plants belonging to the Caprifoliaceae family. Until 2000, all of these were officially listed as a single item, LJF (Jinyinhua), in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. However, there have recently been many academic controversies concerning the separation and combination of LJF and LF in administrative regulation.

Cholestasis causes hepatic accumulation of bile acids leading to liver injury, fibrosis and liver failure. Paeoniflorin, the major active compound isolated from the roots of Paeonia lactiflora pall and Paeonia veitchii Lynch, is extensively used for liver diseases treatment in China. However, the mechanism of paeoniflorin's hepatoprotective effect on cholestasis has not been investigated yet.

Objective: To investigate the changes in epidermal growth factor (EGF) concentrations in infants' serum and breast milk in neonates with late-onset breast milk jaundice after stopping breast feeding.

Methods: Thirty full-term infants with late-onset breast milk jaundice were included in the study. Infants' serum and breast milk were collected before and 72 hours after stopping breast feeding, and the total bilirubin and EGF concentrations in infants' serum and EGF concentration in breast milk were measured respectively.

As a widely used traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Fuzi) is not only efficacious but also poisonous. Its toxicity and processed products should be taken into account and effectively evaluated. In this study, a non-invasive and non-destructive microcalorimetric method was employed to evaluate and compare the toxicity of Fuzi and its three processed products including Yanfupian, Heifupian, and Danfupian on Escherichia coli (E.

Background: Acute-on-chronic hepatitis B liver failure (ACLF-HBV) is a clinically severe disease associated with major life-threatening complications including hepatic encephalopathy and hepatorenal syndrome. The aim of this study was to evaluate the short-term prognostic predictability of the model for end-stage liver disease (MELD), MELD-based indices, and their dynamic changes in patients with ACLF-HBV, and to establish a new model for predicting the prognosis of ACLF-HBV.

Methods: A total of 172 patients with ACLF-HBV who stayed in the hospital for more than 2 weeks were retrospectively recruited.

In the present study, the in vitro inhibitory activity of extracts from radix isatidis on neuraminidase (NA) was investigated by the chemical fluoremetic determination to establish the quality control method for antivirus action of radix isatidis. The initial study indicated that radix isatidis had obvious in vitro inhibitory activity on NA with IC50 = (0.90 +/- 0.

Radix Isatidis (Banlangen in Chinese) is a traditional Chinese medicinal (TCM) herb, and is frequently used for treating influenza. However, the current quality control method for Radix Isatidis should be developed since it has little correlation to the pharmacodynamic action. In this paper, the in vitro inhibitory action of Radix Isatidis on neuraminidase (NA) was investigated by fluorometric assay with 4-methylumbelliferyl-D-N-acetylneuraminate (FL-MU-NANA) method.
