Article Synopsis
  • Cholecystoenteric fistulae are uncommon complications that occur in about 0.5% to 0.9% of patients who undergo cholecystectomy due to gallstone disease.
  • The most frequent type is a cholecystoduodenal fistula, followed by a cholecystocolonic fistula.
  • The paper discusses a unique case involving both fistula types leading to pneumobilia, which was treated through laparoscopic subtotal cholecystectomy and open repair of the fistulae, highlighting the need for careful planning and skilled surgery for such rare cases.

Department of Population Health and Health Disparities, School of Public and Population Health, The University of Texas Medical Branch, 301 University Boulevard Galveston, TX 77555, USA; Division of Geriatrics & Palliative Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, The University of Texas Medical Branch, 301 University Boulevard Galveston, TX 77555, USA; Sealy Center on Aging, The University of Texas Medical Branch, 301 University Boulevard Galveston, TX 77555, USA. Electronic address:

Background & Aims: Dynapenia and obesity have been independently associated with cognitive decline in older adults, but their co-occurring effects has not been well-studied. The study objective is to examine the relationship between dynapenic-obesity and cognitive impairment in older adults 75 years and older with normal or high cognitive function at baseline over 12 years of follow-up. We hypothesize that those with dynapenic obesity will have greater odds of cognitive function impairment than those with dynapenia only, obesity only, or no dynapenia no obesity (reference group).

Background: Comorbidities can potentially impact the presentation or outcome of patients with pilonidal disease (PD) due to poor wound healing or increased inflammatory response. We hypothesized that certain comorbidities could lead to worse pain or higher recurrence rate.

Methods: A retrospective study was performed on all PD patients treated with standardized minimally invasive protocol at our clinic 2019-2022.

January 2018

Department of Pathology and Center for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases, University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas, 301 University Boulevard Galveston, TX 77555-0609, United States. Electronic address:

The circulation of the South-east Asian/American (AS/AM) dengue 2 virus (DENV-2) genotype in the Americas has been associated with a high rate of severe disease. From 1993, the year DENV was reintroduced in Panama, until 2011 there were 29 dengue-associated deaths, 17 of which occurred in 2011, the most severe outbreak with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 44% (17 deaths out of 38 severe dengue cases). During this outbreak DENV-2 was reintroduced into the country, whereas over the prior five years DENV-1 and -3 were predominant.

Natural pathogen transmission of Rickettsia prowazekii, the etiologic agent of epidemic typhus, to humans is associated with arthropods, including human body lice, ticks, and ectoparasites of eastern flying squirrel. Recently, we have documented the presence of small RNAs in Rickettsia species and expression of R. prowazekii sRNAs during infection of cultured human microvascular endothelial cells (HMECs), which represent the primary target cells during human infections.

Safe exposure of the vertebral artery (VA) is needed during resection of tumors close to the artery and during repair of lacerations. We defined the anatomy of the anterior root of each transverse process (TP) from C3 to C6 for identification and exposure of the VA during the anterior approach. We examined the anatomy of the TP and assessed two approaches for safe identification of the VA, lateral to medial and medial to lateral dissection of the TP, in 20 cadavers.

Evidence has shown that lymphatic drainage contributes to removal of debris from the brain but its role in the accumulation of amyloid β peptides (Aβ) has not been demonstrated. We examined the levels of various forms of Aβ in the brain, plasma and lymph nodes in a transgenic model of Alzheimer's disease (AD) at different ages. Herein, we report on the novel finding that Aβ is present in the cervical and axillary lymph nodes of AD transgenic mice and that Aβ levels in lymph nodes increase over time, mirroring the increase of Aβ levels observed in the brain.

Ghrelin is a recently discovered stomach hormone that stimulates growth hormone (GH) secretion, food intake, adiposity, and growth. In this report, we present new and previously published data from our laboratory showing that stomach ghrelin production and secretion are increased, and that GH release in response to exogenous ghrelin is enhanced in the aged rat. Together, these data suggest that the aging associated decline in GH secretion is not due to a reduction in stomach ghrelin secretion or a stimulatory action on GH release.
